The third game in the Fable series sets you the task of becoming ruler of Albion as it enters the industrial era.
During GamesCom 2009, Peter Molyneux officially announced Fable III with a couple of vague details on the story and gameplay. You start as the son or daughter of your Fable II character around 50 years after the events of Fable II in an Albion that starts to look more like 1800s England, and your character is given the task to overthrow a tyrant king/queen and to take his/her place. According to Molyneux, the way you played your character in Fable II will affect how the game world looks but to what extent is still uncertain. Supposedly, around half of the game will be spent fighting against the tyrant, and half will be spent actually ruling Albion.
In his presentation, Molyneux mentioned two gameplay mechanics that will be central for Fable III: 'Judgement' and 'Touch'. Judgement will let you make important decisions in certain parts of the game which might have grave consequences. As the ruler of Albion, you will be able to solve a situation that appears before you (for example, kill a thief if he gets caught or just send him to jail). With the Touch mechanic, Lionhead Studios are hoping for a more sophisticated emotional interaction than in previous Fable games, with players being able to interact physically with NPCs; where before the 'kiss' gesture had the character blowing a kiss to another, Fable III will actually depict the characters kissing. Similarly, players will be able to shake another character's hand, or give him a hug, or tickle them, among other gestures. Molyneux himself finds this extremely interesting since the player, being a king or queen, will be interacting with simple farmers and other civilians.
Details
Actors from the company Shepperton Studios will be doing the voices for the characters in Fable III, which is expected to come out in late 2010 exclusively on the Xbox 360.
It is strongly suspected that there will be some kind of implementation of Project Natal's motion controls, though it has yet to be officially confirmed. Given the support Molyneux has shown for Natal, it is almost a given that it will appear in Fable III in some way. Exactly how the controls would come into play is unknown at this time.
Setting
The game is supposed to be set approximately 50 years after Fable II, when Albion is entering its industrial age. As a result, things such as steam engines and various new gadgets and weapons can be expected.
Reveal trailer
At the beginning of the trailer, we get a blurred image of some shiny, presumably golden, object. In the
background, we hear Theresa saying that the world of Albion is changing. The camera zooms out and we find out that the shiny object is actually a crown, while Theresa is saying that the rulers of Albion are also changing, whether they are kings or queens, pure or corrupted, good or evil. As the camera continues to zoom out, we see that the crown is lying abandoned in the middle of a lush forest and a small bird sitting nearby is looking at it. Finally, we manage to see the bottom of Theresa's skirt. Then the trailer ends and the logo of Fable III appears, while Theresa says: "The race for the crown has begun".
Trivia
Jonathan Ross accidentally leaked the existence of Fable III over his Twitter, several days before the game was announced. He said had spent the day recording lines for Fable III. Once he realized his mistake he removed the offending 'tweet' though it was too late and the Internet had noticed.
