A Very Solid RPG
Fable was something great that would've been greater had more thought been put into combat and gameplay mechanics. Perhaps the most annoying part of the game is a certain feel that makes you feel as though you've been button-mashing your way through. It's fine to play through for a while, but it seems to disappear after a while. A certain "ooh, ahh," for the first few hours of the game turns menacingly into a "sigh" and "not that again."
Perhaps the fact that I was living in a world where a lot was possible is what lead me to actually like the game. Perhaps it was that it seemed to be good at the time. Whatever it was, the graphics always seemed to wow me. The hair waving in the wind, tattoos, bandits, blood, everything looked good. Yet still it was only average, and even then it'd be annoying looking at big, bold eyes.
The sound quality was great as well. There is no doubting that. A great feeling of symphonic power overcame you as you seemed to play through the game. Everything made you feel great. The sound delivered.
Well, to say the least, I think the Role-playing element deserves a HUGE pat on the back. Just so many things are available for you. The fact that children will think you're great if you're good, or that they'll run away in fear at the site of you is nothing short of awesome. The idea of marriage is great as well, along with the way your character evolves over time--wrinkles, white hair, horns/halo, etc.--along with scars, tattoos, stealing, hairstyles, etc. The game even goes far enough for you to have gay marriage. Although there are still shallow promises such as buying businesses. That feature was nowhere to be found in the game, sadly enough.
Overall, Fable is a solid experience, but is definitely not the great RPG that everyone thought it would be. So much was to be had, yet it still needed more. It's not like I'm saying "Don't buy or rent this!" In fact, it's the opposite! I still think this was an awesome game to play JUST because of the customizable abilities, but then again, it can get very repetitive and boring at times. To put it shortly, plain and simple: Almost, but not quite.
