Now that we have had time to analyze the Perk Chart, and pretty much figure out what all of the perks do, it's time to think about what kind of character you want your Sole Survivor to be.

Melee focused? Dumb Jock? Charismatic Sharpshooter? It's up to you!

A fellow Fallout fan created a website, where you can tinker around with a mock character builder. You can assign the first available 28 points to each S.P.E.C.I.A.L. stat, accompanied by the aforementioned Perk Chart to help you decided how many points to drop in each stat based on what perks they could give you and which ones you want!

So, with all of that in, what sort of character(s) are you going to develop while traversing through the Commonwealth? What are going to be the first perks that you are going to get to help your Sole Survivor fulfill his destiny?

    My Character: Suave Scientist

    Original Stats:

    • S - 3
    • P - 4
    • E - 4
    • C - 6
    • I - 6
    • A - 3
    • L - 2

First Perks Taken: Hacker, Science!, Local Leader, Gun Nut, Cap Collector

I normally just make gun characters who combat shotgun there way into and out of every situation and aim for plenty of sniped criticals.

I will probably end up falling into that again, but Bethesda released a video showing of the top tier of a Melee perk a few hours ago and now I am kinda tempted to make a close combat monster. Because it looks hella fun. Gameplay spoilers I guess: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fvmifSyRxg8

I will probably spend like a good hour on initial character creation / starting stats. My initial thought was to try something different by focusing on Luck (better drops and crits) and Endurance (health/resistance/sprinting), with a bit of Agility (more VATS points).

I almost always go with some kind of gunslinger character, so I was thinking of doing energy weapons for this game, but I just can't get into the lasers and the piles of ash the enemies turn into. Either way, it's gonna be a squishy scientist to really make use of that power armor. I'm planning to have high enough charisma for buffed up companions and I'm also going to become mayor of everything. I want to build crazy deathtrap bases with armies of robot men protecting my settlements from raider scum.

I usually gravitate towards characters that have great speech, lock-picking or hacking skills. It stems from an inate desire to see everything. If there's some kind of locked door, special area or something, I want to see it and you can't always force yourself through.

I am the exact same way, especially with Fallout games, since a lot of history/lore is stored in files locked behind terminals. I am like Vinny in that I spend WAY too much time reading all the in-game databases/scrolls/books/etc. that tell the history and info about everything in the world.

If it works the same as 3 and New Vegas, then I'll probably pour a bunch of points into intelligence and charisma. I enjoy the option of talking my way out of things, and I'm pretty sure high Int gives you more points to spend on abilities. I've only seen E3 stuff, so I'm not sure how the leveling works in 4.

I usually play the "Dirty Harry cleaning up the Wasteland" type. I try to talk my way through things but have no problem shooting dudes in the head if they cross me or are outright evil.

I usually stick to lockpicking, small guns, and speech for skills, and my special stats usually ends up allowing me to hold my own in a fight, but still have high enough intelligence to max out my skills by the middle of the game, more or less. Since dialogue checks are usually a big thing in these games I try to min/max speech first and then everything else as needed.

I was looking at that, and the short version is:

You assign your starting SPECIAL points. Then every time you level up, you can choose to buy 1 perk, or buy 1 additional SPECIAL point. There's no level cap and leveling is faster than it was in Fallout 3. And leveling is still XP based.

Han Solo. I always play the charismatic rogue who tries to talk his way out of a situation first yet will shoot a motherfucker if he has to.

Really though, I will play in whatever means allows me to see the most content in my first playthrough. If that means being a goody-two-shoes, a villian, or as neutral as possible, I will do it.

So I don't know what kind of info the creator of this tool using, but in the previous Bethesda Fallouts you could allocate 35 special points, not 28

Edit: I guess the E3 demo they showed allocation of 21 points but that was just so Todd Howard could make fun of himself. At this point who knows...

*Edit* It was pointed out that these perk names and/or descriptions are still speculation, and some points are contrary to what developers have confirmed.

Looking at the Perks chart, the Charisma line has some valuable options:

    • Charisma 4 - Attack Dog
      • Give Dogmeat new abilities to increase his effectiveness on the battlefield.
    • Charisma 5 - Animal Friend
      • Pacify animals in the Wasteland, and get them to do what you want.
    • Charisma 8 - Inspirational
      • Increase the effectiveness and number of companions that can accompany you.

I'm absolutely gonna want those extra Dogmeat skills.

@wraithtek: Normally I don't invest too much in Charisma, but if it's back to influencing the number of companions I can bring I might have to invest in it. I like having companions around, even when they're dumb and can barely keep themselves alive. Hopefully the companions will be more like New Vegas than F3 or Skyrim though. I want actual characters I can care about.

I'm too lazy to plan out a whole spec right now, but I'll probably invest pretty heavily in Agility and Intelligence like I usually do. As for the actual character I'm leaning toward making a lady, because playing a mom in a video game is not something you get to see very often.

Never really messed with Luck, but I do like the idea of playing as someone that's not very good at fighting or talking just somehow bumbling around the wasteland just because of how stupid lucky he gets. I could pretend it's a Douglas Adams novel or something.

Just so you know, the perk descriptions from that site are mostly speculation past the first rank. They've already confirmed you can only have one companion.

I'm definitely with you though, I use companions whenever possible. If they have a personality besides being a packmule to carry my stuff, even better. I loved using Cass in New Vegas mostly for her fun quips.

I was not huge on the fact the game forces you to have a wife so I thought I'd subvert that notion and make a gay character who is closeted because of 50s style values and is in a sham marriage because of the expectation. So although he's shocked that his wife and world as he knew it is gone there is a new-found sense of freedom in this world with none of the sorts of shackles the Old World had. That said it's going to be a huge bummer when all the dialogue options are "I miss my wife" and the main quest is all about finding her/your child.

A charismatic blonde lesbian. I refuse to let the pre-determined story beats keep me from gaying it up everywhere.

Does it matter? I assume it will be easy enough to eventually get your character to all 10s, thus making any kind of nuanced character null and void. Aesthetically though, she'll be some weird looking lady (but not too weird).

@sparky_buzzsaw: I love this so much:

Probably go a little stealthy and use small pistons and sniper rifles over big rocket launchers and the like. I usually put skills on intelligence or whatever else helps lock picking and hacking. I'll be putting points on charisma, science and agility too.

Prediction: the RPG elements of this game will mean nothing and you'll be able to get everything maxed anyway, just like every recent Bethesda game.

I'm actually kind of sad every time I see a character creator after Dragon's Dogma. Nobody ever lets you customize the body, so Dragon's Dogma remains the only game I've been able to accurately portray a fat aged pirate man. I haven't decided what I'll do for Fallout 4, but I imagine I might just make him and his wife as ugly as possible (I seem to recall you can customize both characters no matter which one you end up playing) because the voices won't match any face I want my characters to have anyway.
