Iron Sight aiming looks REALLY awkward to use

#1 Posted by withateethuh (726 posts) -

It might be better on the PC but on the console it looks painfully awkward because of the lack of auto aim. This game engine isn't a shooter engine and that's probably part of the reason ironsights didnt exist in Fallout 3 and part of the reason VATS was so heavily used.

On PC it was great with mods that put it in Fallout 3.  I can't speak for consoles.

Looks fine to me.

Adding stuff like iron-sights will highlight how much this game aint a shooter. V.A.T.S all the way.

I see a lot of people use it in the livestreams

#8 Posted by keyhunter (3207 posts) -

Iunno what you you people are talking about when you say shit like "VATS all the way" and "THIS GAME NOT SHOOTER".
I never had any trouble  hitting people without vats, and vats didnt add any damage bonuses for my character as far as I know.
Vats is fun to use for the camera angles and stuff, but other than that, all it really does is let me stop and think about what I'm gonna do for a second. since my characters were never based around VATS use and generally never got more than one use of VATS per encounter.
If anything, it's all about Luck and Criticals...And bloody mess. Every pistol shot becomes some sort of armor piercing explosive round at that point.

#9 Posted by odintal (1095 posts) -

who cares about ironsights?
2 of my favorite shooters of the past 5 years didn't need them why does this?

#10 Posted by GloomyTangent (209 posts) -
@keyhunter: Once you get the perk that completely refills your AP every time you kill someone, you're basically a god, as you can probably kill everything in one round of vats shots. Plus with Sniper and Concentrated Fire, your crit and accuracy rating go through the roof in VATS. Plus the shooting just felt off to me.
#11 Posted by SmasheControllers (2553 posts) -

You can turn it on and off, if you like.

#13 Posted by Hailinel (25205 posts) -

People take aim using something other than VATS?

#14 Posted by haggis (1677 posts) -
@Infininja: Yeah, you're right, it's not really iron sights. It's strangely floaty, too, which is odd, since Modern Warfare (and, well just about any other FPS) does iron sights perfectly well. I don't really see the point of it.

Do we really need to have the Fallout is an RPG not a FPS discussion again?

I just thought it was simply an FPS RPG (shooter framework and mechanics with RPG elements fuelling the rest).  There really was a discussion about this?

The game looks ass so what difference does it make?

#18 Posted by ReyGitano (2467 posts) -

Oddly enough, the aiming in Fallout 3 never bugged me. Vats pretty much took anything down, and if it didn't, it just shot off a few rounds beforehand and the task was done.
I know that the aiming did really bother my friends though.

#19 Posted by Matt (968 posts) -

Oh wow I didn't know that New Vegas had iron sight aiming in it. So is the shooting better?

I will reserve judgment until I actually play the game.

#21 Posted by Djeffers03 (2545 posts) -

The game is out yet?

#22 Posted by fentonalpha (820 posts) -

A LOT od things looked kinda funky in the media i have seen so far... i wondered why they didn't check this stuff before releasing the media... stuff that looks like high sensitivity while aiming (probably adjustable), janky movements and whatnot... but i figure it's still gonna be as addictive as the first game.  It has that Oblivion / Dead Rising feel too it.... it's not perfect but it's got all the right stuff.
Silly issues didn't ruin these other games for me.  Though the random dialogue in Oblivion was challenging.
Citizen 1: Good Day!
Citizen 2: Did you know Cairn Bolete can be found in caves?
Citizen 1: NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!

The game is still missing a good 'shooter' part.  They should let Gearbox do the next Fallout.
#24 Posted by shivermetimbers (787 posts) -

It's easier just to use the default reticle so you can walk backwards from foes.

@keyhunter:
I played with VATS whenever i had the chance in F3. Aiming and shooting just didn't feel right, and when my action points are out i usually find cover because the shooting part is no fun at all. I'd rather watch combat being played out when the bullets are based off stats anyways.

Nice dude, come to a Fallout new vegas forum when  you dont even like the game and come bashing it?
This isnt IGN dude.

@odintal: What are they?

@AmonHouston:
Didn't you know? All the hip cats bash stuff they don't like, how would the rest of us assholes otherwise know that our own opinion is wrong?
#29 Edited by MrCandleguy (813 posts) -
@CrazyChris: No one said your opinion is wrong. Just no one on the Vegas forums wants to hear you bash the game. If you got nothing good to say, dont say anything. ( thats not to you crazy chris lol, just incase you didnt know)

@withateethuh: just VAT that mofo
#31 Posted by huntad (1958 posts) -

It works amazingly great if you have looser thumbsticks such as those thumbstick extenders or the standard PS3 thumbsticks. Anything with leverage or just a mouse and keyboard. It's not as bad as you think, and it works pretty well.

I disabled the ironsights  in the options, which leaves you with whats in the video that infininja posted.

#33 Posted by Three0neFive (2304 posts) -

Hilariously enough, there are mods for Fallout 3 that handled ironsights/general combat better than New Vegas.

#34 Posted by Jimbo (9988 posts) -

Just checked out a couple videos of this.  What's the point in being able to switch to iron sights mode if the sights still don't line up properly?

#35 Posted by Cincaid (2959 posts) -
@AmonHouston:
I guess my sarcasm doesn't do well in textform, but I'm on the "please stop bashing games you don't like"-side. :)
I just don't understand why some people find the urge to complain about stuff they obviously don't play anyway. Just leave it alone, and let the rest of us have our fun (10am Friday I'm running to buy my copy, since I live in Sweden).
#36 Posted by wolf_blitzer85 (5293 posts) -

Just do what I do. Equip a shotgun, run right up to the bad guy, target the dudes face, and let VATS do the rest.

That's what I've been doing. Very satisfying, too.

I'll still stick primarily to VATS, but the iron sight aiming is a vast improvement over Fallout 3's aiming system. I wasn't able to hit the tiny bugs early on in the game, but I'm guessing that once the targets get bigger, it'll be a lot more useful, especially when I've run out of AP points.

I prefer the iron sights to V.A.T.S now. Usually use V.A.T.S if I feel like I need a boost to even the odds

#40 Posted by Volgin13 (191 posts) -

Hey don't like shooting stuff? Then do what I do, get a sledgehammer and beat the fuck out of the NCR. FUCK THE NCR.

#41 Posted by myslead (929 posts) -

i like the ironsight... it gives you 100% hit chance (or is it? always seemed to hit even if my VATS was giving me 5% chance) when you use it, very useful in sneak attack.

#42 Posted by Sackmanjones (4761 posts) -
@myslead:  I agree bout the sneak attack. If I cant get a good shot in vats I usually can rely on my ironsights to get the job done
#43 Posted by MrCandleguy (813 posts) -
@CrazyChris:

haha sarasm doesnt work at all in text form. (well not for me)

Yea i hate going outta your way to bash on games. Makes you look like a douche.

#44 Posted by Romination (2777 posts) -

I hate iron sights period is all. Well, maybe not as a rule... there's cases... I don't like it when I have to do it to hit something 5 feet away. Fallout looks like it handles that better though, so no problem.
..I don't even know what I just said.

#45 Posted by Xabu (38 posts) -

The iron sights are fantastic, great for shooting and aiming.  I only use VATS if I need breathing room or a little extra kick, which is pretty infrequently.

#46 Posted by Zurv (446 posts) -

points in agi, pearks in AP, and just use VAT to fight :)

i use a 360 controller on the PC (played on a HDTV) and there is no way you can aim well with it :)
also, fighting is dice rolls anyway.. so you aren't being judged by your mouse aim'n skills anyway.
