The Fallout franchise is a post-apocalyptic series of role-playing and tactics games originally developed by Black Isle, and most recently, Bethesda Softworks

Overview

Fallout is an RPG (role-playing game). Every Fallout game has a post-apocalyptic setting in the late 22nd century. Fallout's story and design are heavily influenced by the post-World War 2 nuclear paranoia of the 1950s.

The first Fallout game is sometimes considered to be an unofficial sequel to Wasteland, but it could not use that title as Electronic Arts held the rights to it, and, except for minor in-game references, the games are set in separate universes.

Originally, Fallout was set to use GURPS (the Generic Universal Role-Playing

System) owned by Steve Jackson Games, but negotiations with this company eventually fell through, and an alternate system was developed.  Dubbed SPECIAL (Strength, Perception, Endurance, Charisma, Intelligence, Agility, Luck) it has been used in the direct sequels and many of the spin-off games.
Critically acclaimed, the game inspired a number of sequels and spin-off games, known collectively as the Fallout Series.
