The FAMAS (short for "Fusil d'Assaut de la Manufacture d'Armes de Saint-Étienne", French for "assault rifle of the Saint-Étienne weapon factory") traces back to a project in 1967. It was met with production problems, but in 1978 it became the standard French rifle. It is a bullpup assault rifle like the Steyr AUG, meaning the ammunition is loaded behind the trigger for easier management. It can be used as a semi-automatic, automatic or three burst weapon.

The standard rifle exists in two versions, the FAMAS F1 and the FAMAS G2, only used  by the Marine infantry of the French Navy.

"FÉLIN" is the name of the French infantry combat system which combines a FAMAS with a host of electronics and armor. This can be compared to the infantry combat system found in Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter, where the infantry have access to real-time positioning, body armor and other electronic systems and modern equipment.
