Far Cry 2

Game » consists of 16 releases. First released on Oct 21, 2008

Why, just why?! The game was terrible in every front, the only good thing about it was the graphics. Everything else was terrible and there's nothing special about it. It was tedious, repetitive, frustrating, bland, boring, tepid, and souless. Yet, it has a overall rating of 85 on metacritic.com..... ONE OF THE WORST GAMES OF THE GENERATION HAS POSITIVE RECEPTION!? Ask any hardcore/true/honest gamer, and he/she will tell you that Far Cry 2 is terrible. It's like playing a dumb downed S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and it's even more boring than Crysis. I get scores of 7s, 8s, and 9s. When it should've gotten scores of 3s, 4s, 5s, or 6s.

Tell, what is good about this game other than the graphics?

EDIT: I'm talking about Far Cry 2, I forgotten to add the number 2 in the title of the thread. The first Far Cry was great, the second is downright horrible.

You should troll more. I seem to remember you having a very interesting and deep point of view regarding Bayonetta as well...

Bayonetta was terrible, I can't believe a good game like Onechambara gets terrible reviews while a bad game like Bayonetta gets rave reviews.... EPIC FAIL!

You need more practice at this.

This is why people should also play bad games. You obviously only play major releases, thus, you have a mis-guided perspective. Onechanbara was fucking horrible, however, it was horrible in an awesome way. You either have bad taste, or are trying to get a reaction.

Besides, the reviews for FarCry 2 were a little above mediocre. You're acting like it won GOTY.

For everyone else, if you check out this guys previous posts, you'll see that he just posts insane ideas to get reactions.

While I don't want to feed the troll, the first time I drove past an enemy camp and got my car shot up, shot all of them, repaired my car, drove a little further down the road, realized i was going the wrong way, came back and they had respawned I put this game down. Also it is like almost IMPOSSIBLE to outrun anyone in the car, you're pretty much guaranteed to have to get in your turret and shoot them

I liked far cry 2, it just had a lot of features that broke it.

I'd give Far Cry 2 about an 8.5 too.
Frankly, I'm just shocked people are still complaining about it.

I was about to agree that Far Cry 2 is boring, repetetive and soul-less, but then

Far Cry 2 was a pretty good game, that's why.

I thought Far Cry 2 was great. Sure it was something of a slow burn towards the beginning, but it had a lot of interesting elements to it.

#18 Edited by Geno (6479 posts) - 3 years, 2 months ago

There wasn't anything distinctly broken with Far Cry 2, and as a whole package it was alright. But it by no means innovated in any area, that sounds about 80-85 to me.

Also, anyone who uses "epic fail" shouldn't be on the internet. They should be in a coffin.

I'd give it a 7 myself. It was a solid game, it just wasn't WOW OMG FANTASTIQUE like I'd want my 8s, 9s, and 10s to be.

@Geno: Far Cry 2 was not broken? The game had a terrible bug that corrupted game saves during the second half (on the 360 version at least). I experienced this bug myself. If you were not talking about technical issues then the game mechanics are also quite broken as mentioned above by gunstar. I hated the thought of driving near a road because the enemy AI would  relentlessly chase you.

This.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is a very unique genre of game, and the people that like that game REALLY like it (myself included).  Far Cry 2 is similar to it, while being more contemporary in the setting.  It's a quasi-sim of being a mercenary and having free reign to go about doing jobs however you want to a certain degree.  It's not a world-changing game or anything, and it had flaws - like the constant barrage of dudes that would shoot you on sight - but much of it could be written-off as "realistic", and while it might be realistic to see previously cleared checkpoints repopulated, it made it feel like you weren't making much of an impact on the world (possibly an intentional subtext about the region).  It was game that chose to be different than other FPS games, and that's a good thing, even if it turns off the Halo crowd.

So a game that's close to S.T.A.L.K.E.R. gets a pass, especially from critics.  The review I read about it when it came out had a line that said "if you like S.T.A.L.K.E.R., then you'll like Far Cry 2.".  That was enough to get me to check it out, and he was right.

I never experienced any save bugs on the PC, I don't know about the 360 version. But you're right, now that I think about it there were a few broken things about the game (voice acting and shooting mainly). I forgot that I put it on my least favorites list as well. I've just been reading a Far Cry 2 permadeath log recently and for some reason that must've raised my impressions about the game.

Yeah there seems to be a small contingent of people (mainly PC gamers) that cream their jeans over free roaming FPS titles.

These types of games do have moments of incredible immersion, it's just the hours of slogging through essentially making your own fun that turns a lot of people off.

Yeah, except for the people who say that it doesn't. It's like saying "This game is bad except for all the good parts".

Personally I hated Far Cry 2, but this thread is most definitely trolling.

Eh, I think Far Cry 2 is a "great game". I just don't like how they turned it into everything, but Far Cry. I loved immersing myself into Jack Carver's adventure other than some pretty unknown character. If you really stop and only play Far Cry 2, that's when it shines more than you'd expect. Personally when I am into other great games, I can't get into some others. Lke right now, I can't get into Battlefield Bad Company 2, 'cause I'm into games like Crysis, Dead Space, Killzone 2... Somewhat, and whatever else I think of next.

Also bad attempt at trolling.

FarCry 2 was a good game. It had a kinda cool opening but the parts immediately after that, when you didn´t have enough equipment were pretty tedious. Sure, getting all the guns unlocked was lame and having to go back to town for each mission sucked, but it also had a lot of good things going for it.

I really liked the sense of scope those zones had, the hunt for blood-diamonds led you to some really pretty spots and you felt really alone and isolated in the wilds. Combat was really cool too. I liked the way the guns felt, especially sniper-rifles.
The best missions had you trying to quietly infiltrate the outer edges of a base and then blowing everything up from the inside. OR you could just sit back on a nearby hill, shoot a single gas-canister and watch chaos and fire engulf the entire base (well, the fire didn´t really spread THAT far).
Picking off stragglers with your sniper rifle and waiting for their buddys to come to their rescue was pretty awesome too.

So what, it DID have a good combat structure, the AI was decent, graphics nice, pretty immersive, it's just it didn't make a good story or side missions.  Kind of like AC1 (Like what someone else said) They're making FC3, and I'm pretty sure that's their main concern, to make a good story, but it wasn't like it was horrible... MP's pretty fun with all the funky maps everyone makes on there.

@TheHonestGamer:
Far Cry 2 was NOT a terrible game. It was by no means fantastic, but it had some things going for it. Most of the reason it was so tedious was because of what is arguably the most interesting idea in place, the fact that it was a giant open world for you to explore at your leisure. That idea itself holds great promise and has worked well for many other games, the problem was in repetition, lack of variety, and pacing.

Besides for the obvious pacing issues, the game had great presentation. Like you said it had good graphics, but it also had some nice immersive qualities. Never leaving a first person viewpoint was one good idea, the healing system was another.

If the multiplayer had been better implemented and they had avoided the glaring mission design problems (as in you are doing the same things over and over and over...) It could've been a great game. With everything that it DOES have going for it, I think I would score it a 7 or so.

Also, what exactly did you find so boring about crysis? I wouldn't say it was boring at all. In fact I've gone back to it a few times, recently even to play Mechwarriors: Living Legends, which is a fantastic mod.

EDIT: Wow, I need to stop being tired and lazy today. I didn't read enough of this thread to realize exactly how ridiculous the trolling was. Onechambara... really? You're trying too hard.

Time to make some coffee...
