Quirky, fun, and addictive.
I downloaded the game Fat Princess' demo a couple months ago. I didn't really try and understand it, and found it all quite boring. Apparently my daughter got on it and found it to be quite entertaining, so I sat and watched her play for an hour.
Over the course of that hour I began to see what in the world I was watching... basically capture the flag with cartoon graphics, zany classes, interesting RTS elements, and feeding a little girl cake to make her fat! Wow, was I shocked when I started to discover this gem. The more I played the more it became clear that this is a fun game just trying to creep into my daily life.
The game is deceptively simple. What I mean by this is that anyone can log in and begin to have fun and contribute to the system, but at the same time, someone can become very skilled at this game's system and basically set up zergs or just flat out own you with lock-on skills and terrain/map knowledge.
This game has many different aspects that I found very entertaining. First off the RTS elements of the game make it immediately fun. You can run in and start to build up your castle to make it tougher for the enemy to take your princess or get in and kill your dudes, or you can just pick a class and go in there arrows flying, axes swinging, and shields blocking. The more I played this game, the better I got and learned much more strategy than appears to be in it.
I have some issues with it, some classes are just weak (ranger, worker), but I understand that they all have their own agenda's and purposes, I just wish something like the ranger was really worth playing. Now that the Ninja, Giant, and Pirate are in the game, some of the classes aren't even worth playing during the majority of the game. Though I do believe that it was intentionally done, but it leaves them out of some of the game modes completely.
The maps are varied, and I love the differences between them. I do wish there were more maps, but the ones in it are good enough to hold me over for weeks to come. It is tough to achieve some of the achievements/trophies though because the majority of the games I enter are just total kills instead of the princess ones, but it's not terrible, just tougher. This might deter some of the instant-gratification people though.
One of the best things about this game is the pretentious John Cleese sounding voice-overs saying some of the funniest things I had heard in a while when I first heard them, and they are still funny. If you think it would be funny to hear John Cleese say "noobs", "dudes", and "owning" then you will think it is just as humorous.
All in all this is a terrific game for $7.50, and it will keep my family entertained for months to come. It's one of those games you can get on, kill 30 minutes, and be done with it for the week. I thoroughly enjoy this game and couldn't recommend it more.
