Game of the Year 2008: Best Graphics

2008's nominees for Best Graphics

Our apologies to the ugly ducklings, but in this category, looks are everything. We're not judging strictly on number of polygons, the size of the textures, or the frames per second, though a certain technical prowess is necessary to keep up with these five gorgeous nominees. Strong, inventive art design also plays an important part here. Bottom line: These are all games that we just couldn't take our eyes off of.

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots

There are plenty of valid criticisms that can be leveled at MGS4. Simply setting up a multiplayer game is a byzantine process, and once you actually get into an online match, the experience is so bland that you wish you hadn't. The fan-service-heavy story is thick with dialogue that is as melodramatic as it is longwinded, though you also get treated to plenty of creepy voyeuristic overtones and cringe-inducing attempts at humor. And Otacon; oh how we'd like to gag you with duct tape and beat you with a broomstick. If you want to constantly whimper, we'll give you a reason!

Yet despite all this, Metal Gear Solid 4 is still easily one of our favorite games of 2008, in no small part because the visuals are simply beyond reproach. From the almost eerily natural, emotive animations to the painstaking level of detail on, well, every single thing you see, it's a technical marvel, though it's the quality of the cinematography and the art direction that really make it sing. The game's dramatic use of split-screen late in the game is one of the showier examples of the game's knack for visual flair, but it's apparent that serious thought went into how every shot was framed, and this kind of care brings some visceral punch and dramatic weight to even the silliest video-game nonsense. There's no shortage of huge, action-packed set-pieces in MGS4, but it's the rare quiet moments that really show off the game's craft. It's easy to keep your attention with a barrage of bright colors and flashing lights, but even when you're watching a scene where nothing is said and little is actually done, you don't want to blink. This kind of inference is taken for granted in films, but for a video game, it shows a level of visual subtlety that is unprecedented.

Gears of War 2

Join Delta Squad once more in the fight against the Locust Horde, in this "bigger, better and more badass" sequel to the 2006 smash hit.

Crysis Warhead

The stand alone expansion to Crysis. The game is a parallel story that follows Sergeant Michael 'Psycho' Sykes, a character from the first game, as he faces his own trials and challenges on the other side of the island during the time period of the first game.

LittleBigPlanet

Lead the way as your very own Sackperson in the highly customizable side-scrolling world of LittleBigPlanet, where you can play, create, and share 2.5D levels with your friends and the whole PSN community.

Burnout Paradise

Paradise turns the Burnout series on its head by moving from closed set tracks to an open world full of events to experience both alone and in a group online.

It wasn't all I hoped for, but still would go with Metal Gear Solid 4. It really did look amazing.

Crysis Warhead.

Crysis Warhead on a technical Standpoint, Metal Gear Solid looked great, but Gears won over that mainly because of the futuristic environments, I am a sucker for extra-terrestrial environments.

I think I'm gonna have to say MGS4, not just because it's a great looking game, but because I think it is the first game to really show some of the true raw power of the PS3, and I think that's what makes it stand out.

I would like to throw out Dead Space, personally. It runs just smooth and it's attention to design, for example the gothic-structured hallways... narrow, ribbed-design... It's a brilliant design. It's not just a solid, never-faulting game, it's a wonderfully specific design.

That being said, Burnout has a sexy framerate...

Crysis Warhead, it really isn't a contest when you compare it pixel for pixel.  Thumbnails don't do it justice.

Crysis, but come on, you need the matrix and skynet to run that sucker.

We all know graphically Crysis is tops, that said, I think that Gears 2, for pushing a system that we all were under the impression was "tapped" really steals the show.  That game is gorgeous.

Hmm... Tought one. Warhead gets the technical award but I'd have to say the Gears of War 2 gets the most impressive award. Graphics should include art design and Warhead has very little of that but Gears of War 2 has some cool stuff (look at the Locust caves and stuff)

I have to go with MGS4, every time I boot that up, wow, heck even my friend who's a 360 fanboy said that it had some of the best graphics he'd ever seen...
