User-generated content is a somewhat nebulous buzz phrase at the moment, but in simpler terms, it really just means that a good portion of the fun comes from what you bring to the experience.

Each of our five nominees in this category approach the concept of user-generated content in some unique ways. Though, they're all a bit more like toys than your average game, in that your own imagination plays such an integral role in the process.

LittleBigPlanet

This one was a bit of a no-brainer. No other game in 2008--and arguably, no other game, ever--has put such a singular focus on player empowerment as LittleBigPlanet. There have been countless games, particularly on the PC, that came bundled with a level editor, a good many of which have provided a much higher level of sophistication, but what makes LittleBigPlanet so special is its accessibility. Literally anyone can put together something fun, and even if you're not successful, it's still incredibly fun just to mess around with. The relatively brief single-player campaign exists largely as a tutorial to show players what sort of contraptions players could build and share with the rest of the LBP community. It had bit of a rocky start, but even within the first week there were user-created levels that showed off a level of ingenuity that even the folks at MediaMolecule couldn't have anticipated. While most games are long forgotten in a year's time, LittleBigPlanet is one that stands to be an even more interesting game in 2009.

Spore

Simulate the development and progression of an alien species as it evolves from a single-celled organism to a sapient level, rises up through various stages of civilization, and eventually becomes a space-faring species.

SingStar

The PlayStation 3 debut of SingStar delivers the same style of karaoke gameplay that you've seen in previous games, but with added online functionality you can now download new songs and share your performances with other users.

Blast Works: Build, Trade, Destroy

Inspired by Kento Cho's TUMIKI Fighters, Blast Works: Build, Trade, Destroy is a shooter that allows players to fuse enemy ships with their own in true Katamari fashion. Fully customizable from top to bottom, Blast Works is bottomless pit of quirky, manic fun.

Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts

In this new spin on the platforming genre, Banjo and Kazooie return to battle Gruntilda using unique, player customized vehicles.

Definitely would go with Banjo on this one. Unlike Little Big Planet, its actually got a point to it.

LBP and Spore seem like the obvious choices. I can't see the others muscling in on those two.

It's hard to argue with LittleBigPlanet, but Blastworks was pretty amazing in itself, I think. Especially given the limitations of the Wii... Also, Banjo Kazooie is amazing...

LBP and Banjo are the only real competition here.  I think the depth of LBP puts it a hair ahead of Banjo, personally and I love Nuts and Bolts.  LBP!

Isn't creating your own levels enough of a point for you?

I think LittleBigPlanet's got to win this, hasn't it? The user-generated content on it is so extensive, it's amazing.
