There's no shortage of terrific video games out there that are able to mine familiar ideas in unique and inventive ways, but there's something to be said about a game that can get you excited with its premise alone.

While the finished products don't always pan out, each of these nominees feature a core idea that would make anyone say "Dude, awesome!"

Spore

The winner of this category didn't have to be a great game to win; it just had to sound great if you described it to someone in a couple of sentences. We figure the initial pitch meetings for these five games were all pretty energizing.

Even amongst the others, Spore seemed like a shoe-in for this category on principle alone. It would be hard to devise a more grandiose premise than charting the entire four-billion-year lifespan of a species, from single-celled organism to spacefaring masters of technology. That kind of high-concept epic isn't attempted often in game design; leave it to Will Wright to be the first.

Luckily, Spore did turn out to be pretty special. The creature-editing tools and content-sharing interface anchored the game's community aspect in an unexpected way. And even if its five component games are a bit thin individually, they combine into a cohesive whole that certainly captures enough of that original idea to make the game memorable and influential for a long time to come.

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed

Set in between Star Wars Episodes III and IV, Force Unleashed casts the player as Darth Vader's secret apprentice tasked with hunting down the last of the Jedi Order.

No More Heroes

An action-adventure hack-n-slash title for the Nintendo Wii, players take the role of Travis Touchdown, a man who challenges an organization of assassins to become the most feared hitman in the world.

Mega Man 9

In Mega Man 9, Dr. Wily turns the tables and plants all of the blame on Dr. Light, causing public outcry and letting Wily set up even more devious plans.

Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3

Nearing the verge of defeat at the hands of the Allies, the Soviet leadership goes back in time yet again, this time to erase Albert Einstein before he can usher in the nuclear age.

No Mirror's Edge? I'm surprised, considering it's the premise that earned it so much hype. I haven't played any of those, but reading the blurbs, No More Heroes sounds like a pretty kickass premise.

No More Heroes based off this list, but I would have gone with The World Ends With You.

Tough category. A handful of games that would have to feel slighted at not being even nominated. It does look like No More Heroes is the crowd favorite here and I would have to agree.

I thought Alone in the Dark had a great premise that just didn't execute much at all. Sure saving the world is nothing new, but using Central Park as an open-world location, and detailing it so well, was pretty good. The mystic story they put behind it, i thought, was pretty solid, too.

But since it was a bad game, nobody cares, right? No More Heroes it is, just for the use of the word "Fuckhead" in the first five minutes, entirely unprovoked.

I would've thought Left 4 Dead would've been nominated here?

Gotta say TFU for this one. Destroying shit as a Sith whilst hunting down Jedi? Now that's a premise!

No More Heroes is definitely a close second, though.

Spore - amazing premise on paper, terrible execution as a final product.

Stars Wars for me, although it wasn't as good as I expected, it was still fun to play.

No more Heroes for sure. It should have been better than it was, but hopefully a sequels rolls around that can fully deliver.
