Best Multiplayer Game

Part of the geeky stigma that has long burdened video games comes from the idea that gaming is a solitary experience. That argument has become less and less valid with each passing year, particularly since the proliferation of online play.

This year's best multiplayer experiences offered a terrific variety of both competitive and cooperative options that prove that you can be social without ever leaving the comfort of your sweatpants.

Burnout Paradise

It might seem odd to pick a driving game for best multiplayer, since most multiplayer driving games tend to boil down to lap-times and checkered flags, but this is precisely what makes playing Burnout Paradise with others so brilliant.

You can still compete in standard online races, which are just as thrilling and full of stupendous car crashes as the single-player races. But the real fun lies in the cooperative challenges, which scale nicely from three to eight players, and which range from performing a series of specific acrobatic stunts to smashing the billboards that are scattered throughout Paradise City. The variety of the challenges is pretty great, and while they can get pretty tough, there's an easy pace to the action that makes Burnout Paradise a terrifically social experience.

Burnout Paradise also features one of the simplest, cleverest uses of the PlayStation Eye and Xbox Live Vision camera we've seen. Whenever you take down an online opponent, the game will snap a quick photo of the losing player, allowing you to ever-so-briefly savor the look of defeat in their face. It's great touches like this that turned Burnout Paradise into the game that we spent the most time playing together this year.

Gears of War 2

Join Delta Squad once more in the fight against the Locust Horde, in this bigger, better and more badass sequel to the 2006 smash hit,now with new epic levels.

Rock Band 2

Harmonix, MTV Games, and EA return with the sequel to Rock Band. Rock Band 2 ships with 84 on-disc songs, 20 free downloadable songs, compatibility with all DLC, and the ability to import most songs from the first Rock Band.

Resistance 2

Step back into the shoes of Nathan Hale and fight against the Chimeran invasion of the United States in Resistance 2.

Left 4 Dead

Left 4 Dead puts players in the role of one of four survivors during a zombie apocalypse. Gamers are challenged to get from one safe house to another while facing clusters of "Infected." Co-op is key to survival in this fast paced game of zombie genocide.

Left 4 Dead, though the others (well, haven't played Resistance 2) are solid as well. Especially Gears, they really improved it since the last one.

Left 4 Dead, it redifines the importance of a tight team.

I have all of them, and I would say Resistance 2.  The co-op is really awesome and the competitive is just as fun.
All of them are good nominees though

Left 4 Dead easily.

I thought Burnout Paradise was a little poor compared to the original series.

I'm surprised that Brad is actually able to make it in to work these days. Between the voice and the beard, he should have been abducted by a crowd of obsessed female fans by now.

I'm expecting Left 4 Dead to take it, but I've heard good things about GoW2 as well.

No Smash Bros. Love? Man... Well L4D is pretty damn good, so I suppose I will go there. Burnout Paradise I think is a better single player experience... Mario Kart would be a better multiplayer racing, I think, in general.

Also, medic is my favorite TF2 class. <.<; And I am a man, baby.

Gears multiplayer is really fun but lag and other problems like host advantage in a game that isn't forgiving of that strikes it off the list for me.
