Best Classic Revival

Reviving a classic franchise is a tough balancing act. Change too much and you'll alienate the players who remember the original games. Change too little and you're looking at a bad side-scrolling brawler with slightly better graphics.

In this category we've got five games that handle that tightrope with ease.

Bionic Commando Rearmed

There are a lot of beloved, nearly forgotten classics from the annals of gaming that are ripe for revival on today's hardware. It's one thing to pump out a generic action game and slap that familiar old name on it for a quick cash-in. But it's quite another to pour your heart into truly recapturing the spirit of the original game while making it playable and fun by modern conventions.

It's obvious Bionic Commando Rearmed got the latter treatment from Capcom and the developers at GRIN. The game has "labor of love" written all over it, from the pixel-perfect color schemes of the characters and levels to the brilliant soundtrack based on the music of the original. Little touches like the nearly identical intro text and the hand-drawn talking heads stoke the fires of nostalgia all the more.

Oh yeah, its swing-based 2D action plays just as awesome as the original. Perhaps awesomer.

There were plenty of great classic retreads this year, but none of them made you go "Hey, this is way Bionic Commando!" like Rearmed does. (Nevermind that the rest all lack a bionic arm.) It's all about being faithful to the source material with a contemporary twist.

Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix

This updated version of Super Streeth Fighter II Turbo features redrawn art in High Definition and rebalanced gameplay, in addition to high quality online play.

Space Invaders Extreme

Get totally hella wicked extreme in this updated take on Space Invaders, which adds a combo system, boss battles, and a lot of bass-heavy electronic music.

Final Fantasy IV

Final Fantasy IV continued in the traditional Final Fantasy series style of offering new gameplay mechanics and a strong character driven story.

Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts

In this new spin on the platforming genre, Banjo and Kazooie return to battle Gruntilda using unique, player customized vehicles.

I own three of these and the other two are reportedly awesome as well. This is a tough category. I guess I vote Banjo Nuts and Bolts, with Bionic Commando getting the runner-up.

As much as I don't want to look like a prick (especially because of my Avatar), I can help my self and it has to be said.

Mega Man 9 - what the hell?  It's a Classic Revival that Revived Classic!  Maybe I'm missing something and this category is for franchises that long needed an update.  But even then, this is for the original Mega franchise; Mega Man 8 came out in 1997! (and I read just now on Wikipedia that the Mega Man and Bass GBA game is actually a Super Famicom port from 1998, so even then It's been a while!)  Mega Man X/ ZX/ Zero/ Battle Network and Star Force are completely different products (totally not an exaggeration) and MM9 brings back that which made the original series good.  It should at least be given an honorable mention.

I also think Banjo should be in a different category.  Despite how good that game may be, it's totally a spin-off and not a return to form.

Definetly Banjo. The other games are essentially remakes of classics, which isn't a bad thing by any stretch, but Nuts and Bolts put that franchise back on the map.
