Meh. I have no intention of rewarding Fish's inflated hipster ego.I feel like this is an incredibly hipster thing to say.
As you wish. It's fine as long as you're doing it out of disinterest or apathy rather than out of spite against any words against the glorious ideals of the infallible or unflappable nippon. Though he said what he said in a pretty jerky way, I think he was 100% correct. Most of the Japanese developers who are still making things worth playing seem to agree as well.
I agree with Mesoian.
Phil is a douche. To tell people to 'suck his dick, choke on it' when he won the IGF (which 3 other members of the juror of which he's a part of worked on fez, mind you) justifies me not supporting him.

Don't know much about that. It's just a little unsettling and sad that the people who are screaming the loudest about how terrible of a person Phil Fish for saying the same things Itagaki and Mikami said are people with japanese anime quotes and the most "am I kawaii uguu" avatars. I like anime, but won't excuse bad ones just because they're a japanese export. Same goes with games. And looking at the track record over the past 3 years, I'd say Phil Fish was right. I wish he wasn't, but...what he said made me take a hard look at the last time I bought a japanese game. I think it was Bayonetta, which was Mikami's brainchild.
Actually, that's not true, I bought Marvel and Ultimate Marvel because I am a huge sucker.

You know who's a dick? Tomonobu Itagaki. You know what games are awesome? Ninja Gaiden 1, 2 and Black. Why are you so vested in the psychology of someone you will never meet and who isn't hurting you?

It's not just about those comments. He has a long history of acting like a huge ***hole. I don't think it's strange if people don't want to support him. Goodwill means a lot, especially for small developers.
People aren't just annoyed at Fish for that. There was also his incredibly childish behavior after Fez won the grand prize at the IGF awards during GDC.@Hailinel said:

I'd rather let the quality of the his games decide whether or not I'd purchase his wares.
I've played a bit of FEZ already, I already know it's good. It really blows my mind that people are willing to overlook a good game because of something they read about about a guy who they'll never meet saying something that barely applies to them in a place they'll never go.

because I don't want to put food on the table of someone who is an entitled twit. I'd rather support people who realize that they are making games, who aren't pretentious little snots.

@Sweetz: It's not coming to steam. Phil has said that this is a console game and will never come to steam because it "is something you sit on a couch on a saturday morning and relax with. It is not a PC game" We'll see if that holds, but knowing him, he'd rather die than have his game go somewhere else for money.
Cutting off a potentially huge player base for ridiculous subjective reasons? The gaffes just keep on rolling.
I wouldn't play that game if you paid me. Phil Fish seems like a douche, and I'm not even really basing that opinion on his Japan comment just everything else I've seen of the guy.

It's one thing to be a dick after you're successful. It's another thing to be a raging douche before your game even comes out.

Well no, that was an overaching, supergeneralizing comment. I think my avatar goes far enough to show that it wasn't to be taken seriously. Well, not that seriously anyway, it's half joking but...you know...half jokes and half truths...
My point is if you're choosing not to support someone because of an bit of childish behavior, you're going to stop supporting a huge percentage of the gaming community. Even people with beloved status like Gaben or Miyamoto have times where they're seen as pricks in the public eye. Why don't you forget about the hype and let his work do the talking. There are plenty of devs out there who act in an unsavory manner in interviews and at award shows, but you don't think about them twice when you're checking out a trailer for a game they're making that gets you genuinely excited. Money talks, bullshit walks, let the product speak for itself.

There were many people who didn't play Shadow Complex because of Orson Scott Card's involvement, there are people who won't watch Mel Gibson movies after all the stuff with him went down etc. so it's nothing new.

It's one thing to be a dick after you're successful. It's another thing to be a raging douche before your game even comes out.
How is it different? The main argument against this game isn't that Phil Fish is unproven, it's, quite literally, "He acted like a dick one or two times in a public forum, so fuck him and fuck his game." That sounds equally as childish as Fish's actions.
I wonder how many of the high horse "I'm not supporting this developer because he's a meanie" people are currently playing a game that was at least partially developed or funded by a complete asshole or twenty.
Either get over yourselves or apply this same standard to every purchase you make. Oh, you're too lazy to do that? Yeah, no shit you are.
This looks fun. And $10? Thank you.
That he worked hard on it doesn't matter. People worked hard on the movie John Carter. But that's not enough justification to watch it."Even though he worked hard on the game, I won't give him my money because I don't like his personality based on a few incidents!"
Please grow up, guys.
I think the biggest mistake with Fez is that Polytron signed into Xbox exclusivity. Microsoft probably promised them moon, and MS will not deliver on the sales/promoting promises just like they did with Team Meat. Team Meat learned the hard way, and warned devs extensively about their misfortune. I guess Phil wasn't listening.
If things go badly, he'll come crawling to the PC gamers for support, and unfortunately PC gamers will welcome him with open arms and forget that he didn't give a shit about PC until sales didn't pan out.
Fez was supposed to be on PC from the start, and if it does come to PC it risks having porting issues, which would be a shame.
@Set:
There are dozens upon hundreds of other developers who 'work really hard on their game' who don't come off like Phil Fish does. Why should I support Phil Fish when I could be spending my money on someone who is good AND humble?
Hope this fails miserably for Phil.
Though, it will unfortunately sell well do to the constant in-your-faceness of the games publicity.

What does John Carter have to do with anything? If it's a bad movie (I haven't seen it), then that's fine, but now you're assuming Fez is going to be a bad game? Your example confuses me.

In the end, none of that matters as long as the product is good. If he makes something I like, he has my money. I don't give two shits about the creator's douchinesss.

John Carter is also terrible. Fez is not.
Mel Gibson is an asshole. Lethal Weapon is still an amazing action movie.
Bobby Knight was a MASSIVE asshole. He also has 21 championships under his belt.
I'm saying that the fact Fish supposedly worked hard on the game doesn't negate criticism. Saying "You should see it because he worked hard on it," is justification for watching a school play, not playing a video game.@Hailinel said:

Agreed. But in the same vein, ignoring the game forthright because of some shit he said one time is hardly valid. Let his work tell the tale. It's not like everyone isn't getting a free demo.
Well it better be good now!
Won't be playing it, but not for the popular reasons. First, no 360 means no possible way to play Fez until this guy comes back to the PC. Second, I tend not to enjoy these Indie darling games. Maybe I'll buy it as part of a humble bundle down the road; that's how I usually get these games.

Because his attitude, good or bad, has nothing to do with the quality of game produced. It's like not buying the milk at the store because the stockboy is a prick.
Protip: everyone is an asshole at some point in their life. No one is except from that. No one buys Miyamoto's games because they think he's a swell guy. They buy them because he's proven himself in making good games.

@Mesoian: that stockboy didn't make the milk, he's just selling it so that metaphor doesn't really work. And yeah, maybe everyone IS an asshole at some point, but he's being an asshole NOW so I don't want to support assholish behavior.
also his attitude has nothing to do with the quality of the game, but it does have an effect on the quality of my experience. maybe the game is the best game in the world, but I don't care because his attitude turns me off so much that my enjoyment of the game would be tarnished.

Actually no. He was an asshole 2 months ago. He's since then apologized to the person he insulted, apologized to the media in general, shut down his personal twitter and have 3 major game producers agree and defend his position.
But no one reports on that (actually I think Patrick did).
And no, it doesn't have any effect on the quality of your experience. Phil Fish isn't speaking to you direct through the screen, he's not pushing his agenda on you. You are the one choosing to nickpick something that does not relate to you at all in any way. You are judging a man by a soundbite you read on a website about something you didn't care all that much about in the first place.
Good jorb.
