The beautiful game just got a little bit better

     Be A Goalkeeper
     Be A Goalkeeper
    But not all that much.

It's a funny old game. Every year there's a new football game (or two). It's as if EA Sports are forced to make another football game or something terrible might happen. David Rutter getting sniped in the head or something like that. And this years no different. FIFA 11 trots along and it certainly doesn't dissapoint. But it also doesn't impress much more than FIFA 10 would.

So last year the 'new thing' was 360 Degrees dribbling, which was a major step up from FIFA 09. So what this year?
Personality +. Ok, so it's no game changer, but it certainly sorts a few things. Players like Rooney or Lampard are better at long range-shots than players like, i don't know... Kyrgiakos. (If your american i'm sure you won't know who he is. Just mark my word, he's bad.)

Another new feature is 'Be A Goalkeeper'. Now this is quite cool since now in online team play everyone on the pitch can be controlled. But in single-player mode I found it rather dull. Playing as Pepe Reina, I stand in the back of the net gazing at the beautiful graphics, but getting cold in the snow. I'm playing on World Class difficulty and I never really see any of the ball. Sure, I might make one good punch from a corner kick but then that is it. I'm standing in the back of my net doing nothing for a '4 minute match'. Finally, one of the opposition slams the ball upfield. The strikers are charging at me. I'm excited because I will finally get some action. My hearts pumping. And then... My goddamn centre-back comes in and tackles the striker. I'm left with nothing to save. So this addition is mostly, pretty poor. Nonetheless it is pretty neat messing about in the arena. At least then your sure to get some action.

Another new mode is 'Career mode'. It's not all that new though. Basically, it's where you can chose to do Be A Pro or Manager Mode or both, so no huge improvements there.

Still the multi-player is pretty fun. Especially when your an experienced player from FIFA 10 (like myself) and your playing dweebs who have never played a football game before because you both start on the same measly level rating. You win.

So this year the beautiful game is still beautiful. Just not a major step up like last year was though. We have to say, I don't know how they are going to make FIFA 12 much better. But all-round, a nice pick-up.

    Uppers:
    + Personality + is a neat addition.
    + Addictive multi-player.
+ My local team Oxford United are in it. After 4 years of being in the Blue Square Premier League. =D

    Downers:
    - Be A Goalkeeper.
    - Not a huge step up from FIFA 10.
    - No real referees yet.

A beautiful version of the beautiful game 0

Football titles are fickle beasts. They have tread the tightrope, balancing innovation with refinement. Grand, sweeping changes would alienate the fan base, but there have to be enough advancements to justify the annual price point. The good news is that FIFA 11 is the best footie title yet; the bad news is that the changes wrought on the beloved FIFA 10 might not be to everyone's taste. Right off the bat, FIFA 11 feels different from its predecessor. The highly touted Pro Passing and Personali...
