Final Fantasy IV

Final Fantasy IV is a video game that consists of 11 releases

The 4th game in the Final Fantasy franchise, which introduced the Active-Time Battle (ATB) system, a feature which has went on to become a staple of the series.

Overview

Final Fantasy IV has seen the most remakes of all the Final Fantasy games, most recently the Nintendo DS. Originally released in Japan and subsequently later to the rest of the world. Final Fantasy IV is a turn based Japanese RPG that can last 20 to 40 or more hours depending on which version you are playing. It's original US release on the SNES was an easier version than the Japanese received.  The US Playstation 1 release of Final Fantasy: Chronicles included the original difficulty of the Japanese version. Additional dungeons were added in the Game Boy Advance version. The difficulty was again tweaked with the release of Final Fantasy IV on Nintendo DS and is very difficult compared to previous versions. Final Fantasy IV DS also lacks the extra features that the Gameboy Advance version had but instead has a New Game function and new abilities for your characters to learn.

Final Fantasy IV introduced several enhancements to the RPG genre. These included a cinematic presentation and the ATB (Active Time Batte) system which allows the player to control 5 characters in battle.. The ATB system has since become a mainstay of the series.

Final Fantasy IV's story and characters are well thought out. The characters were unique and all had special abilities that helped the player defeat their enemies.

Prologue

Birthed from a womb of Dragon's maw
And borne unto the stars
By light and darkness cast aloft
Are dreamtide oaths resworn
Moon is swathed in ever-light
Ne'er again to know eclipse
Earth, with hallow'd bounty reconciled

Yet fleeting is the reverie
When moon from shadow has egressed
Guided forth and by light made manifest

Two bound by ties of blood
By Time and Fate then wrest apart
Unto lunar light and Gaian breast

Story

The player takes the role of Cecil, a Dark Knight who commands the Airship fleet of the Kingdom of Baron, known as the Red Wings. At the beginning of the game, we see our hero attacking peaceful villages by order of the King, with the purpose of taking control of the Crystals they posses. After the last battle, he questions the kings motives for stealing and killing innocent people. As a punishment the king strips Cecil of its rank and sends him in an errand to deliver a package to the village of Mist.

Accompanied by his best friend (and rival) the Dragoon Kain. He delivers the package, which is in reality a horde of monsters set to destroy the village and its people.  After this event Cecil decides to find out what’s really behind these actions, embarking on a quest around the planet, it’s underworld, and even the moon. Through this journey he will be joined by a lot of friends, he will defeat his dark past and even find his true origins, fulfilling the prophecy and saving the world.

Version Differences

Final Fantasy IV has been released numerous times over the years with various tweaks that distinguish one from another.

Final Fantasy IV Hard Type

The standard version of Final Fantasy IV originally released for the Super Famicom in Japan.

Final Fantasy IV Easy Type

A rebalanced version of the game that is easier than the standard difficulty.  Certain features were also stripped from the game (such as Cecil's Darkness attack) were stripped from the game to further simplify it.  This is the version of the game originally released in North America as Final Fantasy II for the SNES.

Final Fantasy IV (Final Fantasy Chronicles release)

A Playstation port released in North America as part of a bundle with the Playstation port of Chrono Trigger.  It is a translated version of Hard Type, but as a port it suffers from long loading times not present in the Super Famicom/SNES release.

Final Fantasy IV Advance

A port of Hard Type for the Game Boy Advance, complete with a rewritten translation and an extra dungeon not found in the original console versions.  This version of the game is known for suffering from a laggy battle cursor.

Final Fantasy IV (DS Remake)

A fully redone version of the game for the Nintendo DS, complete with 3D graphics, a new script with added scenes and dialogue, and voice acting.  The game lacks the extra dungeon found in the GBA release, but does contain extras such as an event theater to watch cutscenes, and Whyte, a new Eidolon for Rydia whose stats can be raised by scoring well in a collection of new minigames.
