The seventh numbered entry in the Final Fantasy franchise brings the series into 3D with a landmark title that set new industry standards for cinematic storytelling. Mercenary Cloud Strife joins the rebel group AVALANCHE in their fight against the power-hungry Shinra Company, but their struggle soon becomes a race to save the entire Planet from an impending cataclysm.
Apparently a remake of FFVII is no longer out of the question. Square Enix may be considering a a full remake, and from what I understand the dudes responsible for FFXIII are all for taking on the project. Your take?
My take: You win the award for longest thread title of the month.
On a more related note, it depends on what they do it it. If it's done right, I would certainly get it.
Depends a lot on what they do. As long as the core story, game-play, and original mini-games are left exactly as they are (solely a graphical update) I'd love it, and buy it in a heartbeat. Although, I wouldn't be the slightest bit annoyed if they decided to throw in some extra mini-games, bonus dungeons, or the like.
I thought FFXIII was going to suck and i was pleasantly surprised. I played FF7 for psp not too long ago and it doesn't really strike me as an amazing game...but if they retranslate it with the quality of the FFT: war of the lions retranslation then why not?
Haters are going to hate but it could be a good remake.
Let's try this logically, since a lot of people seem to get really really excited whenever this is brought up
- SE likes to remake FF games
- Up to this point, SE has only remade up to FF IV
- SE will almost certainly remake FF VII, however first they will remake FF V and FF VI
- The remakes will probably be for handhelds
- You should be excited for the FF VI remake, but honestly, the PSX release of the game had these CG scenes that made the characters look like shit, and honestly with the way they've retconned Kefka into a homosexual clown, I'd rather not see it done at all
Hooray! Let's go back to old fashioned, outdated RPG mechanics and a plotline that EVERYONE knows already! You know what's fun? Stagnation!
Oh, but what if they change it a lot? Then the FFVII fans will have a strop. I love these lose lose scenarios, either a great deal of time and money is spent on something that will, at best, do nothing to spur the industry forward (at worst, regress it) or have to put up with cloud-ophiles complaining that they changed too much.
I gotta tell you, I'm excited.
I'll believe it when I see it. A graphical upgrade alone may make me play the game. As Final Fantasy 7 is right now, it's REALLY hard for me to play that game because it looks so outdated, and I already missed the boat when it was new. So I hold no nostalgia for that game.
But I respect it!
RPG (even JRPGs) have changed a lot since FFVII first dropped. Except for the nostalgia factor, I don't see a reason to backtrack to this game unless substantial improvements are made in the core mechanics and presentation. At that point, why not just make a brand new game?
They're going to do it, regardless of what the fans have to say.
I'd be interested in playing a remake, I won't lie, but I think the game should be left well-enough alone.
Mind you, the compiliation has already raped it plenty of times now, a remake can't really hurt it's credentials any more.
Ive only just had a chance to properly play FF7 so a remake isnt all that interesting to me. There is nothing fundamentally wrong with the PS1 version at this point (As I wrote about in this blog post). If they make it and release it for full price then I wont be interested really since ill have seen most of what it has to offer (assuming they add new extra content) so I would wait until it gets really cheap and I im far enough away from my original complete playthrough (which I havent done yet) to be interested at all.
I remember Toriyama talking about wanting to remake it, if he's going to be the director and writer, no. Keep this guy away from those games on the HD consoles.
I'm not even a big fan of FF7 (don't kill me), but seriously I think it's better to be left alone, and they should just shut up about it if they can't do it, Toriyama is also the person who thinks it was a good idea to focus on "human drama" in ff13 and shove all the rest of the stuff into datalog according to one interview, also the guy who says HD towns are too hard to make this generation. If FF13 is an indication, they'll probably dumb down FF7 and focus on cinematics instead of giving you the full experience leaving all the dialogues intact. It may as well be an advent children where you fight your way through with CGI inbetween areas.
If they could remake FF7 with everything presented in a better way (the entire world, all the towns and NPCs, enhanced script, voice acting), I'm all for it, but I wouldn't count on it. Leave the old games alone until they have the ability to bring a proper FF experience on the high definition consoles.
I'm also only here because of the massive thread title.
...But I have been playing the original FF7 on my PsP some, very infrequently though.
I think it would be cool if they just took the story and then remade both the graphics and gameplay, the gameplay of what I've played so far could definetly benefit from some expanding upon its ideas.
" Where's my FFIX remake? "Yeah, they might as well remake that game as well as VIII.
Well no matter what Square team is working on it, it ultimately depends. Graphic-wise, they pretty much got that locked down. I don't know, enable camera control, make everything pretty, I'm confident they can get that done. Remake the music as well, obviously; might as well bring in Uematsu back for that job. I don't know about the voice acting and dialogue, though (I somehow always have a problem with this part). If they can just leave everything about the original intact, then I'd be satisfied with that FFVII remake.
It would be awesome if there were remakes of VIII and IX (played IX recently, enjoyed it). But I think that would be left up to the fans--depends on how many--to decide if they want remakes of those as well or not.
Also, on of the longest forum titles I've ever seen. Just sayin'.
I can't even begin to express how happy I would be if they remade FFVII... Assuming they don't change any of the core game play. Leave the world map, leave random battles, keep the game play EXACTLY the same as the original, just update the graphics and add some VO work.
Just think about how amazing FFVII in the FFXIII engine would look..... oh man.
" Just think about how amazing FFVII in the FFXIII engine would look..... oh man. "...orgasmic?
But I heard they're creating a whole new engine, though I don't know if that's going to be the engine FFVII will be running on.
Eh, it'll be fine running on the FFXIII engine.
"Thank you for putting down something that people always seem to forget. I've always been thinking 7 WILL come, but only after it's forerunners get the time they're shown. And I'm actually kinda looking forward to 6...never played it, and people keep going on about it. I'm a 7 man myself, but that's just because it took my cherry, so I'm really digging the 6 remake.Let's try this logically, since a lot of people seem to get really really excited whenever this is brought up

Umm, there are already remakes of both FFV and FFVI for the GBA. They were also both in Final Fantasy Anthologies for the Playstation. I suppose you mean full blown 3D remakes with redone cutscenes?"- Up to this point, SE has only remade up to FF IV

" They should leave it. If word got out that it's actually a pretty meh game, FFVII fanboys around the world would systematically ragequit life. "The last five years have shown that the angry, ignorant Final Fantasy VII fanboy is a myth.
There are people who dislike VII and always conjur up this figure when they express their opinion, but it never appears; in their mind the only reason anyone could have for considering VII to be the best final fantasy / game ever created is that they're completely crazy. Then there are those who have become cynical about VII because of this mythical creature - those are the saddest bunch.
On the rare occasion that someone defends VII, this is mostly done with good and reasonable arguments without talking down on the other games. Not so the other way around.
It has become very trendy and cool (and easy!) to ridicule those who hold Final Fantasy VII in very high regard - that is where the aggression in any VII debate comes from. Not from the "fanboys".
" @Huey2k2 said:I'm actually thinking it wouldn't be as good. One of the reasons they took so much out of 13 is because the crazy HD art assets take so much time and man-power to make. It took em years (I don't know how many years) to make 13 and it doesn't really have any towns or shops." Just think about how amazing FFVII in the FFXIII engine would look..... oh man. "...orgasmic? "
If they remade 7 like that, they'd probably have to strip out half the small towns and just leave in the iconic ones. That wouldn't be nearly as good.
" @makari said:Lies. FFVII fanboys exist as much as any other. You just don't frequent the places where they are found in abundance (and with good reason, because they're full FFVII fanboys). My point still stands though: FFVII should stay as it is, because it is a legend of it's time. It wouldn't survive modern scrutiny any more than classic RPG's of it's ilk have in the last few years." They should leave it. If word got out that it's actually a pretty meh game, FFVII fanboys around the world would systematically ragequit life.
