Yeah, right there is where you lost me. I like FFVIII but am not bothered by people who don't like it. But even with things I do not like, such as, oh I don't know, how about Kingdom Hearts off the top of my head, even though I think the game itself is stupid, I don't hold any particular malice against the people who play the games.  Basically I'm totally with the OP on this one. This Spoony guy really needs to chill. "
That's fine, if you're content with a population full of twilight fans and such, and our future heading to the one in Idiocracy, that's fine. he's not. But if you're going to tell him what he needs to do, at least watch his videos so you know what you're talking about.

@Pinworm45:
The skinny dude who played through Ripper and shouts 'YOU FOOL!' whenever one of his AI partners mishandles a flash grenade in SWAT 4? The one who makes cameos in Nostalgia Critic and Linkara videos?

Oh yeah. I know the guy. He's often very funny. It's just that it seems the only game opinion I actually agree with him on is the idea that Doom 3 was crap.

And for the record, we'll get to Fallout long before we ever come close to Idiocracy.

People are taking Spoony way too seriously. That part of the review was nearly two years ago.

And he is a Final Fantasy fan. Where do you think he adopted the Moniker of "Spoony?" It's a Final Fantasy IV reference. He just doesn't like where the franchise has headed since FF7. Though he liked FF12 a lot.

Yahtzee seems to be aware that he's being an asshole and so has centered his reviews around that fact, whilst Spoony has always reminded me of some 14 year old goth kid who hates anything thats popular because he thinks it makes him 'edgy and different'.  "
I just don't see an application of substance from Spoony. That's all. Yahtzee might revel in his professional-troll persona, but at least he brings up points regarding mechanics versus just presentation. At least some times :P
  "
Well Spoony's style has always been to approach a game from an emotional standpoint, not from a pure analytical view. Almost all of the games he has reviewed have had some significance with him since his childhood. One of his favorite movies of all time is "The Thing," so when he reviewed the video game, all he cared to talk about was that it was one long escort mission with people throwing up all the time. He didn't care about the controls or the meaning behind it all. It's just not his style.

Well, everyone is entitled to their opinion, and I personally love Final Fantasy VIII (Still haven't finished though) because it was the first Final Fantasy title I played when I was a kid. I bought a PC version on eBay last year and it was like going to Nostalgia-ville. So so good.

And maybe I'm just weird, but I kinda had fun drawing magic, and the junction system was never a problem for me. : /

The opinions of which Final Fantasy is actually the best is so clouded its just awful. For example, most people praise FFX for its great graphics (at launch), yet criticize it for the dialogue of the characters and voice acting. Yet, I've recently started playing FFIX and can vouch that the dialogue in that game is far less mature and developed. I don't know if any of you ever watched it, but back when the Giantbomb boys were still with Gamespot they made a video feature for the 10 year anniversary of the Playstation, where they spoke about FFVII and FFVIII (IX was not mentioned) and Brad and a few of the other staff vouched that FFVIII probably has one of the best, if not THE best story in the entire franchise, and don't particularly understand why there is so much hate for the game. By no means do I believe that FFVIII is in any way in-superior to the other two Playstation 1 entries. It seems to be one of those things where one person says it and it sort of just catches on. Almost like how it caught on that 360 was so much better than PS3 when the consoles first came out, but that is really a matter of opinion. It doesn't stop the spread of the rumour however. Furthermore, this guy who has made these comments about FFVIII and the people who might actually like the game is a complete buffoon and needs to get off his high horse. He obviously believes his opinion is 'the correct one' and that any other interpretation of the title's worth is invalid.

Alright, I'm following this a bit more. Although if nostalgia is his only reasoning, it makes sense why he doesn't care for how the series went after six, far more apparent. I've theorized one of the reasons why there are so many divisions among the Final Fantasy community, outside the reinvention of each entry that the series exhibits, is the awkward nature that the series was released in the states. Can you imagine the expectations people had for each new entry, if half the series wasn't initially released in the states? How as a gamer can you even establish a general consensus of a series like this if you've only dabbled with barely half of the series? So it's another case of a kid brought up with an ever-shifting series, that shifts in a manner that he wasn't prepared for. I've seen this song and dance, and it ends with people complaining that the "real" problem with Final Fantasy VII was that it was in 3D.

Sorry to be a grouch, but if that's his only angle, then count me out. Sometimes things change and we don't like it. Shocker.

Except this! We can't allow this to happen!!! :P

You're complaining about a guy making a joke about people sucking for liking a certain game, while 2 out of 3 Halo fanboys would say you suck for liking ANY game outside of the Halo franchise, and actually mean it.

The guy has made it clear time and time again that he, as a huge nerd himself who plays DnD, boardgames and videogames, thinks it's a-ok to be a geek, and be a fan of nerdy stuff. But his reviews are done for entertainment, first and foremost. He reviewed FFVIII because he used to really like the FF franchise, and thought 8 was a bad entry in the series. He reviewed Highlander 2 because he loves the first Highlander movie, and thinks the second one ruined a lot. He reviews stuff he has opinions on, and sometimes it's rage. But he doesnt hate you or think you suck for liking something he doesnt.

@majormoe:  This might be me just being anal about grammar and the like. It drives me crazy when someone doesn't close their quotes.

More on topic, it doesn't matter whether he was being a dick for dick sake or if he really felt it. If your going to bring attention to it, he's just going to do it again because it brings more views.

Liking games comes down to one thing: taste. It's the same with music, really. Unless a game has obvious, glaring flaws that retards gameplay or even makes the game unplayable, we really have no reason to claim that someone else is of a less intelligent breed than us just because he/she likes playing it.

Spoony is basically successful because he's got wits and is quick with his comments, usually at the appropriate places to make it funny. A part of his fanbase however loves him because of his occasionally exaggerated rants on single subjects (Making a hen out of a feather, so to speak) and his frankness, which he also likes to exaggerate. You know, to make it funny. The more offensive stuff is, the higher the potential of it being funny.

@Faint: Is that the video where they keep looping the video of the Shiva summon from FFVIII in the background haha

VIII is one of my favourite games, not just FF game. For me, it was the story (no matter how little it made sense) and the characters. The assassination mission at the end of Disc 1 still remains one of the most vivid memories I have of games. A lot of its mechanics were horrible though, that draw system is total ass. But yeah, I do love me some VIII.

No, not really actually. "
Step 1) It's cool to hate on popular games so pick one with a fanbase.

FF8

Step 2) Review from an emotional angle instead an analytical one because it's funny. Also don't forget  to over exaggerate negative points for even more comic effect.

Step 3) Remember to use juvenile statement in an attempt to draw more attention to your review.

Final Fantasy VIII sucks and you suck for liking it.

Btw this has nothing to do with FF8 I just hate this review style. Hopefully it will stay as a niche thing and wont get in the way of real reviewers doing their job.

@Pinworm45: Have you got an explanation to go with that comment lol
#67 Posted by Faint (833 posts) -
@Zero_:  i think that was another one they did on april fools. i remember one of the female staff of gamespot talking about how elegant and beautiful the summon of shiva was. however i have a downloaded copy of the look back video on the playstation, which was a different clip entirely. back in the good days of gamespot :)

Taking an internet comedian's deliberately hyperbolic statement about FFVIII as literal is missing the point, and moreover, a mis-representation.

I don't like Final Fantasy VIII at all. It's one of my least favorite, if not, least favorite Final Fantasy game. I was happy to see a internet reviewer called SpoonyOne to criticize and bash the game, by pointing out it's obvious flaws in the gameplay and story. I thought they were pretty funny series of reviews, even if the humor was forced and often juvenile. However, in one of the later parts of his review of FFVIII, he says: "Final Fantasy VIII sucks and you suck for liking it!" I think he went too far with that line. Even thought I don't like the game, I wouldn't attack others for liking it. It just makes you look as bad as the Final Fantasy fanboys for doing so.   Now I know what a lot of you are going to say: "But it's just a joke. No it is not a joke, but a rather petty insult. It's not funny in any way at all. However, I'm surprised he manage to get a lot of support, and many of his mindless followers agree with that statement. Which I find ironic, considering he constantly lampoons Final Fantasy fanboys.  Does anyone else think that was rather pathetic of him to say?
He said he's playing a character.  If you can't tell when he said he'd kill everyone then there is something wrong with you.  It was a joke, if you can't accept that then you are gullible.

I really like Final Fantasy VIII but even I enjoyed Spoony's vids on it. Same for Final Fantasy X. I may not agree with everything he says but it's all humor anyways.

Exactly this. FF Tactics for the PS1 takes third place for me.

I thought Final Fantasy VIII was deeply flawed but I appreciate that Square tried to change things up from VII.  It just happened that Drawing Magic, Junctioning, and Guardian Forces just weren't very fun.  I did like the story though. Only if you go by the theory that Squall gets mortally wounded after he was impaled by icicles and the second half of the game takes place in Squall's dying mind.

The only good Final Fantasy game is IX. Just sayin'.

Final Fantasy VIII is awesome. Probably my favorite. In my opinion, there isn't a single main Final Fantasy that sucks. All of them are great; it's just that not all of them will satisfy every fan. I personally don't like IV all that much. It's a good game, I played it on GBA, DS and plan on playing it on PSP, but for me, it is one of my least favorite Final Fantasy.
