UFOs in Final Fantasy VIII?

Last night I saw a UFO in Final Fanasy VIII, and I couldn't attack it either. It just flew across the screen and then the "battle" was over. What is it and what are you supposed to do when you encounter them? Here's a video of what I saw in the game, in the exact same location:

You'll encounter them at a variety of locations, after you've seen them all, you can "fight" a cute little alien figure at another specific location.
