In the wake of the God of War Collection, I thought Sony and its partners could release other PS2 games for the PS3 and get an HD makeover. Some of the later PS2 games had a really high polygon count. Such titles as Metal Gear Solid 3, Valkyrie Profile 2, Rogue Galaxy and Final Fantasy XII. These games running in 720p would looks fanfuckingtastic; I mean, just look at the treatment GoW2 received.
Note that three of those were either made or published by Square-Enix. Do you think it's possible that SE makes some kind of collection featuring these three games on a single blu-ray disc for $60 while giving them an HD coat of paint and trophies? Also worth pointing out: Final Fantasy XII saw all of its audio files compressed to shit in order to fit the entire game on one DVD; the game wouldn't have this problem on a dual-layered blu-ray disc. What do you guys think: would it be to SE's advantage to put out such a compilation and would you buy it? I know I certainly would.
Final Fantasy XII
Game » consists of 9 releases. Released Mar 16, 2006
The last Final Fantasy game released on the PS2, Final Fantasy XII is distinguished by its condition-driven "gambit" battle system, its Monster Hunter-like open environments and side quests, and its setting in the existing fictional universe of Ivalice.
Would you want an HD port of FFXII ?
I would, but the only problem for Square-Enix would be updating all the assets. For a title like God of War, there's Kratos, a handful of enemies and a a handful of main characters with somewhat generic looking settings. For FFXII, there's a huge world with different looking citizens in each of the towns; also, it has a huge bestiary. If it were feasible, I would want it. But not as much as your other suggestions of MGS3 and VP2.
" I have never played this, and I would love to. Aren't they doing something with Valkyrie Profile on the 360 though? Square announced a few 360 exclusive RPGs last week, and I'm pretty sure the name Valkyrie Profile was in there somewhere. "Think you're referring to the rumor of a new VP game and the Breath of Fire compilation disc. As far as I remember, those were to be unveiled on Microsoft's press conference at E3. However, I wouldn't take that as 360-exclusive.
" @xyzygy said:Oh sorry, I could have swore that I heard they were only doing it for the 360 only. It was kind of confusing so yeah, maybe they are doing a multiplat thing after all." Yes, I think it should be ported and enhanced in HD, I really like the art and I think SD resolution did not do it any justice:
I think a HD version will at least bring players the improved version of the game (zodiac job system, though not that much better than the original) and I think it's worth it just for the visuals upgrade in HD.
BTW, if you any of you have decent machines, PCSX2 runs the game pretty well (not perfectly, the emulator still has a long way to go). You can run it in high resolutions there.
" You can already kinda play it in HD "What do you mean? The game wasn't even in 480p.

" I wouldnt mind one but i think ff12 looks great as it is "Really? I played XII on my PS3 after I got my 32" HDTV and man was that game full of jaggies and aliasing. I think it's the PS2 game that would get the most benefit out of a 720p resolution.
I would be the happiest person in the world and go dancing in the streets if 12 was brought to HD consoles, specifically for achievements.
I've beat the game twice, put over 200 hours into the second play through and still want more. I would love to go through it a third time but really I should be playing other games since I have so many that need to be beat, this would be the perfect excuse to go through it a third time though.
Also the game looks awful on HD TVs for some reason, worse than many other pre-HD games do. I tried playing a bit of it on my current TV but everything looked so jagged and blurry.
" I would want to see FFVII in HD first "I think this game would look like shit in HD. All the flaws and lack of detail would be put under the spotlight for everyone to see. This game doesn't need a port, it needs to be remade from the ground-up.

" If only it was the enhanced version that was only released in Japan. "Yeah, the International version would be nice. I think it allowed the player to control guest party members.
Why the hell would you want to port it when the better Zodiac International Job System is out and no one in the Asian market even talks about the original version?
FF12 is dead, much like how KH and KH2 are dead, and the Final Mix+ editions are the official games now.
Port the IZJS version and add trophies and we got a dead.
Fuck no I don't want the original version of FF12 when the International version fixes so much of it and makes it one of the best games Square had ever made.

"I love how you grab every chance you get to show off how much you "know stuff" from Japan. If you'd bother to read the thread you'd find that I never explicitly said I wanted a port of the "original" and that further in I said it'd actually be great if we got the International version. You're just a pretentious little kid who's a nuisance and who should shut up.
Yes, I'm playing FFXII on my PS3, and it's painful to watch. It might be because it's not emulating properly (I have the later ones with software emulation), but man...
It's still a blast to play at least.
" Honestly, the game looks good enough as it is. I don't necessarily crave an HD port. "But did you play it on your PS3 hooked up to an HDTV? Because in my opinion, the game looks very far from "good".
" Hell no lol. 12 was awful. It was barely FF. "I take it you're refering to the "offline mmo" aspect of the game. I get where you're coming from but I wouldn't classify XII as being "awful" and it felt very Final Fantasy-ish to me.

Not a chance. It would be amazing for them to do such a beautiful act of fan-service, but they're more likely to release them as separate Special Editions with an in-disc soundtrack, art stills, and making-of vids.
The HD-ifiying part isn't that difficult. All they need to do in re-output their texture files at a higher resolution based off of the original high-rez PSD files. The models have a decent poly-count, so just resaving those original textures from 512x512 to even 1028x1028 would make a huge graphical difference. The main issue is that a ton of the programming code would have to be altered to fit the PS3 framework.
" The main issue is that a ton of the programming code would have to be altered to fit the PS3 framework. "But it wouldn't take that much time to retouch the code, no? I'm talking about a couple of months at plus. I doubt it would take more than a year to do so and I'm sure a small team would be able to pull it off. In the end, if the game/compilation sells, I think it would be quite the financial interest to release such a product.
Actually, refurbishing the code could take enough man-hours to make the project less than profitable for SE. I don't know what the structure is for the code in its native PS2 environment and what that would entail to make it run properly in the PS3 architecture, though. But there are a lot of graphical specifications for even just character & stage models that differ greatly between platforms.
But you never know. If enough time passes, the demand is sure to rise too. Especially as folks begin cleaning house and dumping their old machines. I would bet more on an FFX port first, though. Since they've had FFIX out on PSN here in Japan for a few weeks, SE may be working their way toward it.

"But Final Fantasy X in HD would look kinda weird. The game is in 4:3 and I don't know if it would be possible to put it in 16:9 seeing as the camera is fixed and a panoramic view would probably reveal glitches and unfinished textures and whatnot. I think it would make more sense to put out FFX on PSN once Sony finally decides to put out PS2 games on it.
I hate to say it, but I would probably buy any HD port of this game regardless of plans to replay it. I remember playing it just earlier this year in late 2009/early 2010 and while it was super tough to go back to PS2 graphics, eventually you start to appreciate just how well crafted everything is, and what great art direction they had. I would love to see this game in HD.
