I swear Japan has a problem, they don't make characters either masculine or feminine it's like a horrible mix.

Am I the only one who can't tell the boys from the girls?
You can tell. Only Hope is the one that seems the most feminine but even then you can determine that he's male by his voice and the fact that he doesn't have longer hair and or more girlish styles.
And Japan's inherent problem is that there are some men who look like girls, or has this kind of thing for it. Either way, as long as they stay within boundaries I'm alright with it. They're more or less the American problem of making every hero super bulky giants or incredibly handsome whites.
How can you not tell? Every once and a while there is one character that is kind of hard but for the most part it is very easy to tell.
Cliche androgyny is even more played out than bald space marine with the added bonus of creepiness. Doesn't help that anytime they have a half decent character design they ruin it by giving her an outfit with 37.5 belts /facepalm.
I haven't seen much media but the blonde chick and black guy seem to be the only two that aren't potentially trannies.
"It's anime, if you want to get into it, that's something you'll have to get into. (Don't get into anime). "
Because all anime is like, yessir.
It's pretty much just a genre of style they use, it's more popular now then it used to be.
Chicks used to have gigantic breasts.
The whole thing about Bridget doesn't really make sense to me. I mean, if a drawing of somebody looks like a girl in every way, but then illustrator says "Haha! It's actually a boy!", why does it matter? It's not like there's anything actually there. there's no invisible penis, it's just a drawing. And if it looks like a girl, as far as I'm concerned, it's a girl. To be clear, this only applies to illustrations IMO.
"at least sh... he has a background story for being girlish... which more or less a desing choice for that character.
Anime has a bad habit of doing this. Case in point, Bridget. "
dont blame her... i mean him.

" @Andorski:I find it a tad disturbing that making a female version of Cloud simply means a hair change.

It just makes absolutely no sense. Where does an Asian country implement non-Asian looking androgynous characters into its character design? The sociological reasons are many but the sheer lack of dissent or contrast in this respect is astounding. I could be wrong but I have yet to find a distinct presence of non-Anime from Japan in both their video games (more so JRPG's) and animation.
How long until people get tired of it? I'm curious to see.

Until someone breaks out of that circle with their design and happens to become popular, it might be around for a little while. That or gradual evolution in anime, just like how from the 80s or 90s characters had huge boob designs.

i have this problem with most of the japanese crap.
i hate the shitty anime out there, stuff that looks more like Akira and Bebop is awesome, everything else is garbage sailor moon shit.
Simple : All the boys are androgynous unless they're shallow urban or racist stereotypes. It's modern Squaresoft.
" androgyny is kind of hot imo >_> "Well you also like anime so your opinion is invalid.
