ATB or CTB?

#1 Posted by atejas (3057 posts) -

Which combat system do you expect, and which do you hope for? The Active Time Battle(a la VII and X-2), or the Conditional Turn-Based(a la X)
frankly, it looks like ATB, but I can still hope that it'll be CTB.

CTB for me, really loved the way it worked, it focused more on a more strategic aproach to the fights in my opinion.

Though i doubt they will use either of the system, my guess is that they are gonna try to do something as different as they did in FFXII

I liked XII's system. I have no idea what it's called lol but I loved being able to see the monsters on screen.

Its a mixture of 10 and 12 so its ATB. This is confirmed by SE.

I'm a big fan of turn-based stuff.

wait, but X was CTB. Still, if ATB is confirmed, it's one game off my list.

ATB I think would be more fitting.

Don't be stupid. This will be the single best game that has ever been created, regardless of what type of battle system it uses. And it's not a full CTB or ATB. It's a hybrid system. You have an ATB bar and any action that you take reduces the ATB bar. It either recharges slowly over time or gets a chunk back each turn, regardless, if you have no ATB bar left you can't do anything.

Wait, you mean a bit like Grandia? And I disagree that it'll be great anyway, because I ended up hating X-2 and VII(yes, VII) because of ATB.

There will be no other game like it B)

ok, just one question. If it's your turn, and you fail to act fast enough, does that mean your turn is forfieted? Cause that's what I hate about ATB.

I doubt we will ever see a true CTB again, however, never say never with Square-Enix. After all Square went from being the company that never looked back or rereleased games to being the Spin Off/One Off/Sequel monster it is today.

Im hoping for CBT, really... But im also a fan of XII's system, so its not gonna be a game ruining decision :P

#14 Posted by atejas (3057 posts) -

I've never played XII, so tell me...if you dont respond fast enough, do you forfeit your turn?

As far as I know its an ATB and there are no MPs or mana or fany kind so you simply let it charge a little more to use magic and if you let it charge a little you can do normal attacks. Overdrives are changed so that you fulfill a certain number of characteristics and unleash a related overdrive instead of just getting hit a lto whcih is far more logical.

Im more of a ATB

its gotta be CTB for me. I like being able to stand still and strategize what I wanna do!
At least if there was the option to choose ATB or ATB, wouldnt have to worry. You could shift between the two whenever you like.

Fixed.

I hope its CTB, although I'll live with it being ATB.

CTB

ATB here makes it more action packed especially when you have the battle speed all the way up!

CTB has been the best for me so far. I really don't like what SE did with FF XII. I feel it removed a lot of what Final Fantasy was.

#23 Posted by solidphoenix (286 posts) -

I think that the system will be more of the Final Fantasy XII ADB (Active Dimension Battle) system, incorporating more mobility in battle as well as an extra dimension to the combat that hasn't been announced yet.

It does look like that. It looks more like actual input than the previous FFs though.

I thought I remembered reading in an EGM interview from like a year ago (SC4 was on the cover) that the battle system was indeed turn-based.  I really enjoyed CTB for the strategic element it offered.  I get the idea that this will be more like XII, because your position isn't static, at least judging by the trailers that have been released.  I like the idea of super-fancy cinematic combat, but it remains to be seen if they can integrate that into a battle system that makes sense.

Also, motorcycles.

I'd want the ATB for 13.. I just like ATB better.. but CTB is still fun

Yeah he's right if you let it charge a lot you cna do complex stuff like magics and summons, but if you let it charge a little you can execute normal attacks. also enemies will be like in FFXII wiht nor rnadom encounters. I really like that anyway if you really want turn based strategy take a look at the new valkyria game that is coming out.
