Flashy!
Square Enix has a busy 2009 ahead. Chatting with one of the company's PR reps earlier this week, I came to realize the RPG magnate's release lineup is stuffed full with games like:

(Those last three don't have actual release dates that I could find at the moment. But as complete as they all looked and played at TGS last year, I'd expect them sooner than later. )

What you do not see on that list, of course, is any flavor of Final Fantasy XIII. The action offshoot Versus XIII and the mobile phone-turned-PSP title Agito XIII are also still in the pipe, but it's the main FFXIII release that I'm really interested in, coming from veterans of quality past Final Fantasy titles as it does. Nobody on the planet knows when the game will see the light of day, though, at least nobody willing to talk about it. (Then again, I wonder if even the people making the game have a clear end date in mind yet.)

Anyway, you can make one more necessary checkmark on the FFXIII release timeline now that Square has launched the official Final Fantasy XIII site (pictured at right and only available in Japanese, natch). It's got a smattering of info on the three unveiled characters so far (Lightning, Vanille, and Snow), a fair number of screenshots, and a currently inactive trailers section.

The screens are all Flashified and not easily right-click-saved, but you can always get your Print Screen on if you want to, you know, fill out any Final Fantasy XIII-related wikis or something.

Speaking of, I was surprised just now to see a note on the FFXIII Wikipedia page saying that the Xbox 360 version won't begin development until after the Japanese PS3 edition is finished. They're both supposed to release day-and-date in the West, I think. Does that have any bearing on which one you'll get? Which one will you get?

God, when are these guys going to realize Asian markets aren't the only ones they sell their product in like hot cakes??? I WANT TO READ! Ugh, there still at it.... Oh well, I guess I can wait.. And just flip trough the site and be sad. Too bad my computer is about to die from the page being open lol. It is pretty sexy though, even if I'm not seeing anything new... Which is annoying, almost as bad a that lame halo3.com, which had no purpose at all, everyone knows you had to go to bungie.net anyway.

It builds hype. Definatly not useless

Square-Enix has a pretty crappy track record so far when it comes to the 360. I'm not going to trust a port from them. I'm sure the PS3 version will have plenty of its own bugs, but I'm betting there will be fewer than the 360 one.

I'm very pissed off at the idea of having to wait for the 360 port so they can be released on the same day. In this day and age they're STILL not doing simultaneous translations during development? What the hell?

#8 Posted by Meteora (5787 posts) -

I've been meaning to find the official FFXIII site but couldn't find it. Thanks for the news Jeff, but I'll wait until there's an English version or something.

#9 Posted by Coleslaw893 (409 posts) -

PS3 version for me :)

#10 Posted by PowerSerj (987 posts) -

Damnit, I want this game more than anything right now. Even more than a nice, big bowl of Mini Wheats.

#11 Posted by Tirrandir (217 posts) -

Square might be many things, but 'with the times' is not one of them, sadly.  Still, I'll get this game, because I'm stupid like that.  Final Fantasy achievements?  Sign me up.

Final Fantasy eh? This is without doubt the apotheosis of something something... umm yeah.  Look over there is that!?!

I'm really looking forward to this game. I'm just waiting to see how the demo turns out, which is supposed to be released in March in Japan.

#15 Posted by HiroSeven (215 posts) -

Much like the anticipation of final fantasy IV, VII and X (being on the next gen systems) I think FF XIII will be something special to behold.

I'm glad they've announced this for the Xbox 360 as that is the console I will most likely be playing this game on. I think this might be the first time that the initial release of a final fantasy game is going to be on two different systems... I hope things go for the better!

The initial release is actually only going to be on PS3. Hence Brad's last paragraph.
#18 Posted by GordonFreeman1500 (27 posts) -

I cant wait for this AND versus XIII, which resembles more of FINAL FANTASY VII  in my opinion.

#19 Posted by rioneye (2 posts) -

definetly getting this and versus, so PS3 version for me (plus no disk swapping:) )

#20 Posted by Lepuke (327 posts) -

I have both consoles, and as a rule I buy multi-platform games for my 360 instead of my PS3 (thank god I did not buy Fallout 3 for the PS3)
But since FFXIII is being developed for the PS3 first, buying the PS3 version shouldn't be a regret.
If it turns out that the 360 version is superior, I'll be mad I broke my multi-platform rule and heaven help Sony.

#21 Posted by dtran1212 (299 posts) -

ps3 version for me, i bet the 360 version will suck

#22 Posted by suneku (2997 posts) -

I was browsing that site this morning, damnit I can't wait to play this game.

#23 Posted by Sincillian (530 posts) -

I can't wait to get most of those games. I foresee me spending hours alone in my room playing Final Fantasy XIII.

#24 Posted by Shinryu (245 posts) -

I'll be buying the 360 Version due the fact that i dont own and do not plan to purchase a PS3

#25 Posted by McBain (41 posts) -

I'm getting it for the PS3 because swapping out discs is something I stopped doing once the PS2 was released. Go figure.

#26 Posted by Afroman269 (7387 posts) -

I would get the 360 one because of achievements cus the trophies never really caught my interest, but I may not get this game do the fact that I don't care for any of the Final Fantasy games.

#27 Posted by RHCPfan24 (8609 posts) -

No FFIII this year? Yawn.

#28 Posted by Steve_C (1750 posts) -

Getting it on PS3 to go along with Versus XIII. The real world setting looks really interesting. Not that i have a 360 anyway.

I'm finding the music to be exquisite though, or at least the one track. There weren't many tunes that i really enjoyed in XII.. it needed more Uematsu. Hopefully it will be awesome again.

#29 Posted by ElectricHaggis (630 posts) -

If all things are equal in a technical sense, I will get the game on the 360 (for the points and what not).

#30 Posted by Meteora (5787 posts) -
@Karmum: Fuck, I messed up there. I meant Brad not Jeff.

Also I believe that technically every console game is a port; because they are first developed on the computers first. Technically there shouldn't be much problem when it comes to porting to the consoles aside from technical and graphical differences, though there are some ports that seem to be worse off than others for some reason. Guess its not as simple as it sounds.
#31 Posted by Mister_Snig (561 posts) -

Really digging the music on that page. Anyone know what it is, other than the fact that it has to do with Final Fantasy 13?

#32 Posted by jimbojones (156 posts) -

I love all these noobs ignorantly replying "360 version will suck! LOL". You kids should grow up.

360 version will be just as good, if not better

#33 Posted by CallMeRotten (229 posts) -

At long last Ziggy Stardust gets his own game!

#34 Edited by granderojo (1778 posts) -

Haven't liked final fantasy since seven, probably I will give this a spin.

Will have a PS3 by the time this comes out and will most definitely be buying it on PS3, just for old times sake, and I don't want to see sony kick the buck it with gaming.

#35 Posted by Tiwi (1401 posts) -

You know what would be awesome I Square *giggles* in the end of development *giggles*  just said
"Haha we pulled your leg pretty hard there ya?! No, port for 360!  " *bursting in to Laughter*
*complete silence*
"look a bird!"
*runs away*

#36 Posted by killdave (1073 posts) -

I'll be getting this one the 360 due to the fact I've misplaced my ps3 controller. Can you play games with a blu-ray remote??

#37 Posted by RawShark (236 posts) -

I find it funny that people are still bothered by disc-switching. UUH NUUHS I HAVE TO GET UP FROM THE SOFA BAAAAWWWW D'=

I hope the battle system is, as they say, closer to replicating the flow of Advent Children. That film made me like FF7.

#38 Posted by jimbojones (156 posts) -

The first sony playstation required 4 discs for final fantasy games.

They may be written using a computer, but that has nothing to do with how it's coded. If they are using the native APIs and programming for that specific hardware platform, then that is not porting.

I don't think anyone believes it's that big a deal, but if you have the choice then obviously you don't want to have to switch discs. It's a positive point no matter how insignificant.
#40 Posted by Parsnip (1077 posts) -

The music on the site is probably Masashi Hamauzu's work. It certainly sounds like Hamauzu.

And god damn they need new character designers. All Tetsuya Nomura characters look the same. Which is one reason why FF12 was so awesome

#41 Posted by Media_Master (3283 posts) -

I might try this one out...just maybe...

#42 Edited by Kore22 (22 posts) -

I would translate it for you, but I only know half of Japanese script. :(

From what i've read, it seems that Snow is going to be like Wakka was in FF10 (Witty, sometimes a little dumb, wants to get into the action.)

Cant read enough from the others to warrent an opinion.

PS: Also, if the pictures to the right are in-game, I am going to shit my pants.

#43 Posted by Axersia (1613 posts) -

I'm not planning on getting any version of FFXIII, but I'll probably end up picking it up anyway after it gets a price drop like I do with all FF games. If so, it'll be for 360 (unless I own a PS3 at that time).

I'm much more excited for FFvsXIII, actually -- I'll probably end up buying a PS3 just for that. But as far as RPGs go, FF is one of my least favorite series, and I'm only interested in FFvsXIII because it's being done by the KH team.

#44 Posted by PercyChuggs (1087 posts) -

As a fan of RPG's with FUN combat systems, I'll pass on this one. Cookie cutter characters and story doesn't cut it for me.

#45 Posted by AuthenticM (3699 posts) -

This game is going to be awesome. Final Fantasy XIII, that is.

#46 Posted by Blomakrans (148 posts) -

Aww if it wasnt for the flash site i would have used google translator (which rocks btw).

Anyways, I'll be getting my copy for the Ps3 since I don't have the 360. And yeah another thing, if they do make some changes to either edition (ps3 or 360) I'm guessing that they would choose the ps3 to be the "better" one.

#47 Posted by Jayzilla (2555 posts) -

Seeing as it is easier to develop for the 360, I will get that version. For some reason (I'm no expert) games seem more polished and run more smoothly on the 360 than the PS3 imo. The load times are always less too. Maybe I will wait though and see which one actually plays better or if there is, if any, bonus content for the PS3 version. if there is bonus content on one or the other, I will go with that version no matter how it runs.

I believe in the last paragraph that Brad thinks (according to sources) that they are coming out on the same day in the west? At least that's what I understand, I could be wrong though.

edit: I couldn't get the <blockquote> thing to work for some reason...
