so I've been looking at metacritic for a while and i noticed something strange: 

My thoughts are that you've not been looking at it long enough.

Reviews as they are counted tend to fluctuate till they become steady.
If you notice the ps3 version has many many more reviews then the 360 version, this being because there are far more sites, and magazines dedicated to ps3 and that are counted in metacritic.
A review average means nothing in the end it can be swayed by certain sites used.

Take this as a lesson in statistics:

In the case of multiplatform releases, it's likely that each version has reviews from outlets that the other doesn't. An Xbox magazine wouldn't review the PS3 version for example, so that will cause them to go out of sync if they score the game differently. Be sure to only compare reviews from the same outlet if you're going to do that.

Here's one of the problems with living in the age of review scores and Metacritic.  
 
Even in most every reviewer's subject text, they clearly write that "The PlayStation 3 version of Final Fantasy XIII is better than the XBOX 360 version of Final Fantasy XIII" but they still have to slap some kind of score on the review. 
 
I used to think that people/consumers just scroll-down and look at the score and nothing else... but here's the thing, the PS3 version, even in the Americas, is still outselling the XBOX 360 version of Final Fantasy XIII... so, maybe people do actually read the subject text of reviews after all and there is no problem?  Or maybe most people don't even care about video game websites and/or reviews, like at all?  For these people, maybe they just look to see what is selling best on Amazon.com or hearing from a friend what to buy? 
 
I think the only people that do reviews right is Kotaku, but heck, there's not too many sites that can get away with that or else they'd get no traffic.  The score is a necessary evil that can cause problems like this one, but is needed to help generate traffic. 
 
Anyway, I think LordAndrew is right, blame the PlayStation Magazines for this. 

Megacritic is like Metacritic, but they only cover reviews for Sega Mega Drive games. The site has been dead since 1996.

Megacritic might not know shit but Metacritic does.....yes I like beating a dead horse.

I use to think that Metacritic was stupid.  Now I just think people who interpret the data that Metacritic has are stupid.

Megacritic sucks. I love metacritic. :D
 
Anyways, I never use metacritic comparing games. The score doesn't really mean much.

I don't listen to any site except metacritic any more. They are trustworthy and dependable, and I only buy games based on metacritic score. You can't trust those other sites like Giant Bomb and all associated Whiskey Media.

Megacritic sucks... they keep on trying to get you to join Megacritic Premium and if you don't, you have to wait 52 minutes after every 72 minutes of reading reviews... bullshit...

Guess reviewers.... really like achievements, right guys?

The consensus is that barring res drop that is barely noticable and horribly compressed videos, the two games play indentically. This whole "AAAH WHY ARE THEY GETTING THE SAME SCORE!?" thing stems from Bayonetta being reviewed separately by most sites (as opposed to literally getting a clumped together score) and that was only because the performance of that game on the PS3 impacted the actual gameplay to such a degree that it was reflected in the score.
 
The 360 version - though clearly not the one you wanna get if you have the option - actually performs better in many situations due to the lowered resolution, and overall the games PLAY the same. If you want to get your panties in a twist about scores, you should prolly look at things like Assassin's Creed 1 or Skate 1, which display a similar vast difference in performance to Bayonetta.
 
But really, it's pretty unfeasible that sites review each version of a game independently in the first place, so such a function would be forfeit  to factor in at Metacritic anyway.

Most outlets have only done one review score for both and mentioned the difference - what do you expect them to do?
 
I like metacritic - ignore the meta-score and just use it as links to a whole host of reviews.  e.g. new IGN layout sucks - it is easier to find their reviews via metacritic for anything but the newest games.

Metacritic is a nice starting place to look up reviews for games. I use it, but I never go "OH SHIT THAT HAS A 94! I HAVE TO BUY IT NOW, EVEN THOUGH I DON'T HAVE ANY CLUE WHAT IT IS."
 
It's just a nice tool. Using Metacritic scores as an end all be all is not the fault of Metacritic, but of the user.

I don't think I've ever used Metacritic.  This is probably one of those reasons why.

I have a friend who occasionally complains to me that RottenTomatoes scores for movies are wrong.  They aren't.  The same applies here.

I've never met a single person who has ever used Metacritic to help them decide on a purchase - in fact the only place it's ever brought up is forums.

Ughh... I just want to erase Megacritic soccer out of my mind forever. That was just embarrassing! It made megacritic 3D look like a masterpiece. "

The reason why review scores for the 360 and PS3 versions tend to be identical in score is due to the fact that reviewers review a game as a whole, and generally don't put a lot of weight on graphical differences if they don't have any significant impacts on gameplay. The 360 version doesn't look as good as the PS3 version but the difference isn't significant (main difference being the FMVs; and reviewers aren't going to dock a game's score based on FMV quality differences) and it has no effect on gameplay performance. Compare this with Bayonetta on the other hand which had significant performance issues on the PS3 version and hence scored a little lower than the 360 version.
