Is the FF13 360 version unplayable?

#1 Posted by 617_jbug (350 posts) -

I want to take advantage of the Best Buy sale and my local store only has the 360 version in stock. Am I missing anything if I buy the 360 version?

Yes, a slightly lower resolution and some video artefacting make a game completely and utterly unplayable.

Don't forget a stuttering framerate in Chapter 11, the backtracking chapter.

Look, everyone says if you have a PS3, get the PS3 version.

As much as I'd like to say any version of the game is unplayable, I'll tell you that the 360 version is a perfectly fine version of the game.  The disc switching is a little annoying, but aside from that I didn't have any trouble with it.

I have a PS3 but my store doesn't have a copy there. If I can get FF13 for $20 I think I probable could at least give it a shot.

Hell no!  The game ran and looked phenomenal from my 360's HDD.  No worries  AT ALL.
Great price too 0.0.

This. Don't be worried. I spent 150 hours with the game and got everything possible to get, and the game looked great throughout the entire time. It's playability shouldn't be questioned, and it's a really great game.

Only fanboys worry about insignificant details like lower resolution. You don't want to be a fanboy...do you? *stare*

The game is the same on both versions, only a bit of a downgrade in graphical terms in the xbox 360. Does that matter that much?

Even for people that play Persona 3 Portable? :p

The game is perfectly fine, buy it.

Resolution is a pretty big deal for some people... especially if you're used to playing on your PC at 1080p.  I doubt it will be all that noticeable for you though.  If the 360 version is significantly cheaper, go for it.

Oh dear... Talk about a bad first impression.
Joking of course, it's a fine game but don't judge the Final Fantasy series on this game alone. If you like it, I'd highly recommend FFX. If you don't like it, I'd still recommend you try FFVII or FFIX. That's not to say you can't like both FFXIII/FFX and FFVII/FFIX, I've yet to find a single post-FFIII game that I dislike.
As for the JRPG genre, you could also give the Shin Megami Tensei series a try. Either one of the Persona games or Nocturne.

@617_jbug: How are you getting it for $20?
#17 Posted by LiquidPrince (16186 posts) -

It's definitely playable. Just doesn't run as smoothly or look quite as pretty. If you can't get the PS3 version, then you might as well go for the 360 version.

@617_jbug:  Having the 360 version is not unplayable. It looks fine, I didn't notice anything wrong with it (tehnically speaking, that is).

It is still a god awful, overly long, and terribly written game....but it looked pretty.

It plays fine, but there are some grainy textures. From a tech standpoint, its fine.

If you have a DS get FFIV or Chronotrigger.  Those are some good JRPGs.  FFXIII is kinda average, I could hardly stand it.

I think we can all over look some grain and a slight lower resolution that you wouldn't even complain about unless you compared it side by side....  BUY IT!!!

#23 Posted by 617_jbug (350 posts) -
@endaround:  Best Buy has it for $40 and if your a Gamers Reward Zone member there is a $20 off coupon on their reward zone site.

My brother played through the entire game on 360 and said he had no problems.

#25 Posted by Cambody (30 posts) -

No problem here but I just have a 1080i, also I downloaded it on my 250gig Xbox hard drive.

#26 Posted by GunstarRed (5489 posts) -

I have played the bulk of it on a smaller HD tv and  it seemed fine apart from some strangely low resolution cgi bits but since ive moved to a bigger tv and got to chapter 11 i'm noticing some horrible frame rate drops and reaaaaally ugly grass textures. The game looks gorgeous on a  whole though...

so yeah, pretty unplayable.

It runs just fine.

#28 Posted by schizogony (977 posts) -

It's one of the best looking Xbox 360 games.

#29 Posted by Webby (720 posts) -

If you have both then you might as well get the PS3 version if not still get it for 360.
It is the same as Dragon Age, looks and plays best on a good PC but still more than worth playing on consoles.

#30 Edited by 617_jbug (350 posts) -

I picked it up yesterday and just started playing today (On Chapter 2), you can see the difference from the opening movie and the cutscenes in the game. I am enjoying the game so far.

#31 Edited by Chocobodude3 (644 posts) -
@617_jbug: I have not played the PS3 version but the 360 looks and plays fine to me. And the only major diffraction is that the 360 version has 3 DVD's
#32 Posted by infestedandy (266 posts) -
@Make_Me_Mad:  That's hilarious man. Hahahaha. Right there with ya.

@Laketown:  I have no idea how you can actually comment on a FF game if you consider FFX a "bad" game. FFX-2 was an atrocious game, that's unquestionable. FFVI was my all-time favorite game in the series but X is right up there with the best.
#33 Posted by Spence_5060 (356 posts) -

The only real difference is that the cut scenes for the PS3 version are mostly genuinely better looking. But besides that nothing else is different.

#34 Posted by ISuperGamerI (1880 posts) -

It also depends on which console you play the most games on and such. I think the 360 version is just as great though.

The framerate is actually better in the 360 version, according to reports. Its apparently a result of the slightly worse graphics.
