On August 28th, 1999, the game was available with the purchase of a special DX version. It was then released through the Nintendo Power download service on September 1st, 1999. It was finally released in a classic cartridge form on January 21st, 2000, making it one of the very last Super Famicom games. The game was a relatively bold success both critically and in sales.
The game is considered a midquel of Fire Emblem: Seisen no Kifu because the plot unfolds between Chapters 5 and 6 in the precedent game's storyline. Consequentially, many characters from Seisen no Kifu appear in the game.
In the year Gran 776, the kingdom of Lenster, under the command of prince Cuan, is suddenly attacked by the Dragon Knights of Thracia. The Knights hastely destroy the kingdom leaving almost nothing in their path. Leaf, the son of Cuan, after a successful escape, decides to take action and form a small army to take on Trabant, the perfid king of Thracia.
The game is the first in the series to introduce the fog of war concept, a mysterious fog which impedes the player from seeing the entire battlefield. Consequentially, the game introduced a new item, the torch, wich allowed characters to enlighten large portions of the map for a short amount of time. Both have since then been recurring features.
Thracia 776 also introduced a "Capture" command, which allowed characters to take control of infrastructures and a "Rescue" system, which allowed mounted units to load smaller characters and rescue them. While both brought interesting new strategies to the game, only the former survived and is currently featured in all Fire Emblem titles.
The game is the only one in the series to feature the fatigue meter, a bar which was tied to each character and raised each time he or she entered battle. Once filled, that character was not allowed to partecipate in the next mission, forcing players to use as many units as possible and avoid extra combat.
