Forgotten Realms

By far the most popular Dungeons and Dragons tabletop campaign setting, the Forgotten Realms franchise is even more popular for video games. Parent to several genre-defining subgenres such as Baldur's Gate and Neverwinter Nights, the Forgotten Realms logo holds a lot of credibility – and expectations.

Concepts

60 FPS on Consoles

Theoretically, all PC games can run at a solid 60 frames per second and beyond. On consoles, this frame rate is a much rarer commodity, with many games targeting only 30, sometimes even struggling to keep up.
A.I. Companion

An AI companion is a computer-controlled ally who follows and aids you through your adventures or who requires your protection. The AI companion's survival is often essential to game and story progression.
Abjuration

Abjuration is the school of magic that deals with protective spells (buffs) and counter magic.
AD&D Rules

The systems in these games are governed by rules from the pen-and-paper RPG Advanced Dungeons & Dragons. There have been many turn-based and action RPGs that have utilized parts of the AD&D rule set.
Alignment

Gameplay system where choices in actions and dialogue affect the alignment of the protagonist on a spectrum toward opposite poles. Changes in alignment often modify the course of the narrative, player abilities, and gameplay options.
Alteration

The act of turning one thing into another, be it lead into gold or earth into air.
Atheism

The absence of belief in the existence of gods.
Attributes

Attributes are a numerical representation of a character's abilities who have their roots in RPGs. Today, attributes have spilled over to a wide range of game genres.
Aurora Engine

The spiritual successor to the Infinity Engine. This 3D engine made its appearance in the Neverwinter Nights series, and provided a toolset along with multiplayer where players could be Dungeon Masters and make their own stories and play them out with friends.
Automap

A map that is updated in real-time as you play a level. Usually seen in FPSs.
Badger

Badgers are creatures that have short legs and are part of the Weasel-family. They appear in video games every so often and are part of an old-school internet meme.
Bandit

A rogue character who doesn't obey the law, bandits are known to steal from people for their own selfish gain.
Barbarians

Barbarians in games are often known for their brute strength, large size compared to normal humans, appetite for meat and ale, general crudeness, and prowess in melee combat.
Bards

Poet and scholar, singer and narrator. A lover of wine, women and song, the bard is the iconic minstrel of the medieval world.
Bears

A large omnivorous mammal that can be white, brown, or black. Despite their ferociousness, they are also associated with being soft and cuddly, as in teddy bears. Bears are also known to eat stairs. Scientists say that because "bears eat stairs" rhymes the bears are naturally inclined to do so.
Beholder

While essentially just a floating head with a bunch of eyes, the beholder is a classic Dungeons & Dragons Monster.
Betrayal

Betrayal is when a person breaks the trust and faith that others have placed in them.
Bink Video

A proprietary video codec (.bik extension) developed by RAD Game Tools and used in a very large number of video games.
Blocking

The ability to stop or reduce the damage from an oncoming attack.
Blunt Weapons

Bats, hammers, wrenches, maces, staves, or even brass knuckles. These are weapons intended for blunt trauma rather than cutting or slicing.
Body Armor

Body armor in games acts as additional protection. In most cases, when a player takes damage that would completely affect their health, their body armor reduces the damage taken or takes the damage instead.
Book Tie-in

Games that are based upon books or novels.
Book-like Menus

Games with menus that consist of a book like interface (atleast upon start up).
Boss Fight

A boss fight is a culminating challenge that pits the player against one or more enemies representing a greater threat and/or difficulty than those previously faced. These scenarios typically feature unique antagonists.
Branching Story Line

Games that let you choose you path you take through through the story-line.
Breakdance

A highly acrobatic hip-hop inspired dance style.
Breaking the Fourth Wall

In video games, breaking the fourth wall occurs when a game becomes aware of it is game-nature or when a character directly acknowledges you, the player.
Breast Bounce

The deliberate animation of breasts, either in an exaggerated fashion meant to titillate, or as a means to conform to more realistic physics.
Bring Me His Head

Sometimes when accepting a quest or mission of killing someone a request is made for evidence that the target (or targets) is dead in the form of the objectives head being brought back to the quest giver.
