Age of Empires II is coming back, to Steam, with steamworks and workshop!!! From Hiddem Path!!! And there is no news of it on the site.

Giantbomb is really slow on the news these days. ;-(

Yes! but the visuals look the same and they just zoomed out the camera or the POV which is depressing but IDC because now i can have it in steam forever and play with my brothers online easily! Also it is really funny that they are using steam multiplayer etc. instead of windows live. But that just makes the game 1000x better windows live is terrible.

#3 Posted by ansys (60 posts) - 2 months, 12 days ago

Yes Steam is so much better. It is a shame that Skulls of The Shogun are forced to use windows 8 live. :-(

Yes! Yes! Yes!

The first PC game I ever owned and I played it to death. It's where I owned my 'build walls and hide behind them' technique :D

First System Shock 2 makes a return and now this, now all we need is Grim Fandango and were set.

Been awhile since I have played 2, really got into 3 a couple years ago with friends so I'll probably get this

Wow that's awesome. Been looking for a way to play it for awhile. Just gonna wait for this now

GOAT strategy game.

I'll wait for the summer sale though.

Cool.

This qualifies for a new game page right?

Actually really hyped that this is coming out, I loved playing AoE2 but I destroyed the disks for a physics project back in high school. Was a good mix of army management and base building.

#11 Edited by Svenzon (542 posts) - 2 months, 12 days ago

Great timing, Microsoft! I've actually been thinking about buying AoE2 recently, so this is awesome!

#12 Posted by Bourbon_Warrior (4494 posts) - 2 months, 12 days ago

I loved AoE2, it was my first online game I really got into. Zone.com yo!

I see a bright future for this release. There is a reason this game is considered a classic. The question is if I should repurchase it since I still have my original discs.

Age of mythology shits on all the other age of empires games!

Fucking awesome, my original disc is scratched beyond playability.

#16 Posted by BaneFireLord (2264 posts) - 2 months, 12 days ago

Awesome! Something new for my PC multiplayer group to play that I can actually play on my laptop.

Age of Empires II is one of my favorite RTS of all time so this is great news.

Time to build all the trebuchets all over again.

#22 Posted by Cyrus_Saren (465 posts) - 2 months, 12 days ago

That is awesome. This was one of my first PC games and I would love to play it again.

#23 Posted by Scrawnto (1960 posts) - 2 months, 12 days ago

Yes! To my eternal shame, I pirated AoE II as a kid. I will totally get it legitimately this time around.

#24 Posted by CrossTheAtlantic (1085 posts) - 2 months, 12 days ago

This is awesome. If you have the original still, you should check out the Forgotten Empires expansion.

Super pumped for this on Steam.

The original AOE was the first real videogame I ever owned, and I sunk an astounding number of hours into that second game, i'm going to have to pick this up. I still have the Age of the Conquerors exapnsion PC box in my closet. Oh the memories...

#26 Posted by hangedtoaster (155 posts) - 2 months, 12 days ago

OH SNAP, Stoked that this is coming back.

#28 Edited by Ben_H (2660 posts) - 2 months, 11 days ago

OH GOD YES ALREADY PREORDERED AS SOON AS I SAW

I still owned boxed copies of this and the expansion (with the jumbo badass PC game boxes they used to have. They are both complete with manuals and everything. I cherish these games). This is my alltime favourite game. Words cannot describe how excited I am to be able to play this without having to do a bunch of crazy stuff to get it to run on a modern monitor.

Starcraft will probably take a back seat to this once it comes out. I played this a fair amount on the Zone back in the day. With the mechanics I have from Starcraft now I will probably be pretty okay at it. When I played it a while back I had a blast.

Welp...there's my GOTY for this year.

Age of Empires II is fantastic, despite my complete and utter inability to play it with any level of skill.

#31 Posted by TheHBK (4870 posts) - 2 months, 11 days ago

Holy Shit balls dude. I was just gonna fire this game up after the disappointment that is Sim City. Hot damn!

#32 Edited by haffy (637 posts) - 2 months, 11 days ago

Actually got interested in history because of this game.

LOL, my first RTS was Age of Mythology but it seems like build walls and hide was the first tactic newbies used. I got pwned on 'hard' difficulty and online though.

AoM rocks!

Considering the original supported resolutions of up to 1280x1024 (though the sprites look lower) I get the impression the only thing that's 'HD' about this is the aspect ratio, but it's still cool that they're doing this and releasing it in a way that seems logical. Although the "Available on Steam! Pre-purchase on our website!" made me chuckle.

Let's just hope they haven't messed with the glorious MIDI soundtrack.

#36 Posted by cikame (755 posts) - 2 months, 1 day ago

@evilnights: That soundtrack needs to be identical.

So looking forward to playing this again, i hope someone can recreate classic archers blood maps.

Reloaded has apparently patched a retail bug.

#38 Edited by Sanity (1506 posts) - 1 month, 10 days ago

Played it a bit tonight and its still fun as ever even with me just fucking around against the AI, i hear roumors that they may do this with Rise of Nations as well which would make me one happy person.

#39 Posted by RollingZeppelin (1364 posts) - 1 month, 10 days ago

I'd get it but it's not worth the asking price for such an old game, classic or not. Maybe if there's a good discount during the next steam sale.

#40 Edited by Caustic_Fox (78 posts) - 1 month, 10 days ago

I use to play this many years ago and I loved it but... $20 for an old ass game... are you fucking kidding me? This game shouldn't cost more than $5 at most. Its still a good game but for that asking price for a 14 year-old re-release?

Yea, 20$ is a tad high but 5 bucks is what you think this is worth? I mean even re-releases of games normally are 10-15 bucks and 20 is hardly highway robbery or anything. I guess i just have lots of fond memories of this.

$5? Are you serious? Blizzard still charges $15 for Starcraft on their site and a lot of old games on GOG are 10 to 15 bucks. $20 might be a tiny bit steep, but $5 would be giving it away. It cost some money to integrate with Steam and all of that.
