Poll: Beyblade was pretty dumb, did You ever get into IT? (152 votes)

Yes 51%
No 38%
What the fuck is beyblade 11%

So I found some old beyblade with the dumb launcher and was reminded of how dumb this was. My buddy got my into it, he even made me a custom one with all the internal fixings. I even started watching the tv show. My buddy even bought one of those bowls, and we would have like 5 beyblades battle it out, holy crap was that dumb.Do you ever get into this? I feel that this was very short lived is it still around?

I was way way way into it for about half a school year back in elementary school, though I can't remember exactly when. It was still a neat little thing. Apparently people are still into that whole thing, though, which seems super weird.

#2 Posted by FlamingHobo (4483 posts) -

Hell yeah! Beyblades were pretty huge, at the time, in my primary school, same with Yu-Gi-Oh!, Pokémon, and Jackie Chan Adventures trading cards.

That was well past my time for that kind of stuff, but my little brother got into it. It did look kinda dumb, but not necessarily so much that I couldn't see myself getting into them had I been the right age. Fuck, I bought those dumb robot battlers things where you swipe cards to make them do stuff. (Sounded so cool in theory, but man was it dumb.)

I'm pretty sure Beyblade still around, although I think most kids have moved on to other stuff.

I'm still into the new tops are made of metal and I feel like it's easier to see the effects of the customization on the tops

Your Random CAPITALISATION is pretty dumb too

#7 Posted by LiquidPrince (15946 posts) -

I liked it when the first season came out for like a month.

#8 Edited by believer258 (11898 posts) -

Was this show full of "smoking a bowl" puns? If not, there were some serious missed opportunities.

#9 Posted by Optix12 (613 posts) -

some weird reason I got pretty into it, I bought a ton of those things almost all of the first "generation" ones that came out. There were 2 which for some reason would just destroy all the others with the driger (yea i had to google that up) just flat out destroying fools. The dumbest one had to be an american branded one (trygle) which was just taller than the others and if hit right that shit springed up in the air and did a downward attack. Yea those real life blades were dumb from early on.

That thing where they tried to convince 8 year old's that spinning tops were XTREME? No I was way too old but they did manage my brother who was about 10 at the time.

#11 Posted by BIGJEFFREY (5020 posts) -

I was always to old as well

#12 Posted by FunkasaurasRex (847 posts) -

My parents wouldn't buy me a Beyblade because they'd had it after Pokemon, Digimon, Yu-Gi-Oh and all that bullshit. They probably should've wised up sooner all things considered.

Those things would fuck up your hand if you grabbed them while they were spinning too fast. They're still pretty big with kids, but I don't think there's a tv show anymore.

EDIT: Also, according to popular video game website www.giantbomb.com, it originated as a manga. I would have assumed that the toys came first and everything else was just marketing material, but what the fuck do I know?

#14 Posted by vorpalparasite (289 posts) -

I used to watch it before going to school for a while, never bought one of the toys though.

#15 Edited by Ryuku_Ryosake (211 posts) -

I was into them for awhile. Past most of my friends caring. I was really into that first season of the show. Mainly because it has a fantastic English opening theme. I know I had to wake up early to watch it. I think it was on like right after Zoids Chaotic Century which were both on ungodly early in the mourning on my ABC family. I also want to echo the fact that the first Driger was a beast. That was my go to bey. I even imported a couple metal japanese beyblades at some point.

A couple years back my younger cousin was into beyblade. I imparted unto him the secret bey knowledge to always let it rip at a 45 degree angle downwards at the bowl. That just immediately makes any beyblade just savage. He even beat me a couple times once I told him.

Also as someone who watches cartoon network in the morning while I'm getting ready out of tradition. I can inform you that A. children are still into Beyblade, B. children are also still into Pokemon, and C. children are into talking Lego.

#16 Posted by super2j (1681 posts) -

All up in that and illegal metal disc beyblades lol.

#17 Posted by Sin4profit (2931 posts) -

Depends on what you mean by, "into it" my cousin had some of the toys and an arena; for the 10 whole minutes i played it, that shit was bad-ass.

#18 Posted by ZeForgotten (10397 posts) -

It became super popular around here at some point but I have no idea why.
I remember the theme song was kickass (in a dumb kind of way) to wake up too in the morning when it was on TV.
Alarm clock woke me up from my sleep, turned on the TV on the channel I needed, theme song was on, drank my coffe. Theme song ende, turned off the TV and went to work but that's about it.

#19 Posted by Barf_Surprise (66 posts) -

That fucking show wakes me up EVERY FUCKING MORNING! Bey blade bey blade lets get made nah nah nah nah. Not sure what it is, but from what I can gather it is super important Dreidel Fighting. Ugh

#20 Edited by GorillaMoPena (2124 posts) -

Someone brought one to lunch when I was high school, the first time they spun it it sliced my finger

I ended up not going to my next class, so it was worth it?

#21 Posted by KrypticKiller (191 posts) -

Hell yes! My whole neighborhood was into it. For like 3 months we would all gather around this old park and battle it out. I had this launcher (Little green one) and for whatever reason it would spin the Beyblade faster than any other, so I would end up just winning every time. I ended up beating everyone in my age group so the kids hunted down a kid in grade 8 (I was in 5 or 6) and I lost to him. This kid was like huge, no doubt having way more muscle than I did.

Simple times.

#22 Posted by FLStyle (4693 posts) -

I never played it myself, but I liked the show.

#23 Posted by RioStarwind (544 posts) -

Nope I wasn't the right age to get into BeyBlade it seems. Plus by that point Pokemon already had most of my attention. YuGiOh also got me into CCG so I didn't really even really notice BB other than the first episode.

#24 Posted by ToTheNines (721 posts) -

No, I was 21 at the time...

#25 Edited by ThePickle (4182 posts) -

I never watched the show but I got down with some Beys on the school yard for sure.

#26 Edited by TheManWithNoPlan (5479 posts) -

No. I was more of a Pokemon aficionado at the time.

#27 Posted by phampire (285 posts) -

Yeah, I remember buying fake plastice ones because the real ones were too expensive. I also recall you could get metal ones which were more durable/dangerous.

#28 Posted by moffattron9000 (353 posts) -

I remember looking all over time to find some of the things, since it was sold out citywide. To my parents who put up with me and my sister desperately wanting them, sorry.

#29 Posted by JJOR64 (18989 posts) -

One of my friends did. I never go into it.

#30 Posted by Roboculus92 (506 posts) -

I remember buying crazy Chinese beyblades from the ice cream man when I was in elementary/middle school (I can't quite remember when). I think they spun quicker than the normal ones they sold here, which made them not only more dangerous but also a bit unfair. Also, having the ice cream man sell chips and toys (or anything that wasn't ice cream) threw me for a loop at first but you quickly got used to it.

#31 Posted by Turtlebird95 (2387 posts) -

No. Pokeman, Yugioh, and Digimon (to some extent) were all the rage for me.

There is a show that's on CartoonNetwork I believe. I watched a tiny bit of it once when I had the flu and could not be bothered to change the channel. The dialogue is laughably bad and the constant use of the phrase "LET IT RIP" cracked me up.

#32 Edited by Killroycantkill (1406 posts) -

Yeah I got into it. I even got some aftermarket weights and actually shattered this kids beyblade at my elementary school... then they banned them... so I ruined it for the whole school. But it was totally worth it to see that beyblade explode.

#33 Posted by DarthOrange (3861 posts) -

Nope. It is still a thing though. I believe that they now have actual action figures on the top. At least that is what the commercials lead me to believe.

#34 Edited by ThePhantomnaut (6197 posts) -

I had much fun during first generation.

I also got into the Chinese copycats but apparently the parts I received, the plastic quality broke down a lot faster making them ineffective in the long run.

The only big craze I remember was Pokemon. I guess I was too old for it?

#36 Posted by oldenglishC (957 posts) -

@zeik: Rumble Robots! Showing my age a little bit, but they made a great drinking game in college.

#37 Edited by OllyOxenFree (4973 posts) -

The anime? No. I could not get over the main dude's huge-ass head.

#38 Posted by Little_Socrates (5677 posts) -

I let it rip once or twice, but I never got into it.

#39 Posted by Nightriff (5079 posts) -

My nephew who is 13 years younger than me got into it but I told him its stupid and that Pokemon is where it is at. I'm wrong in regards to kids these days but Pokemon trumps stupid beyblade.

#40 Edited by Itwongo (1197 posts) -

Yeah, it was pretty neat. I was smart, though.

I played both beyblade AND Pokemon.

#41 Edited by MariachiMacabre (7096 posts) -

Fuck no. Pokemon.

It literally MAKES me want to kill myself.

WITH a gun.

#42 Posted by bobafettjm (1487 posts) -

I was already too old when it came out. I do usually try and get some interest in things that kids are into since I work with them, however Beyblades were a thing that a small group really loved that I just did not understand.

#43 Edited by Flappy (2240 posts) -

Hell YEAH! I remember buying a DRIGER beyblade on a school trip and totally dominating with it. Dranzer was pretty cool too, but Driger got me the WINS.

#44 Posted by probablytuna (3654 posts) -

I collected a handful of them but I never got to play it against my friends cause it was banned like the first week we brought it to school.

#45 Posted by thebunnyhunter (1417 posts) -

My spinning toy of choice was fly wheels, too old for beyblades but seeing who could take a jump the furthest with their "fly wheel: was fun times.

#46 Edited by Mijati (921 posts) -

My younger brothers were into it so I ended up getting one too (or playing with there's? I can't remember). Only did for a few days so not really "into" it.

Right, that's what they were called. I still think the concept of those things are cool, but it would take a lot more to make those things deliver on that concept. I suppose Skylanders is kind of the evolution of those things though.

Yeah, I got into IT.

I'm not quite sure what that has to do with Beyblades though...

#49 Posted by Cold_Wolven (2219 posts) -

Not the act of playing Beyblades but I really liked the TV show when it first aired.

#50 Posted by Nictel (2412 posts) -

No I found the idea of throwing spinning things into an arena dumb. Pokemon and Yu-gi-ph were awesome though. That's my brain for you.
