I love how they went into the BBS/Warez scene of the 80's/90's and their experiences. Tangents like this are meaningful because that's how the early gamers on PC did things. See, when they go on tangents, they can still be topical. Of course, I still fell asleep about 30-40 minutes in as I usually do since I listen on my iPod when I go to bed. IRC, Usenet, flavors of BBS software.. totally awesome topics. Lets hear more of this love in future Bombcasts!

#2 Posted by MariachiMacabre (7047 posts) -

Going off-topic remains the best parts of the bombcast. I'm sure for saying that you'll accuse me of being a fanboy stalker murderer or something (remember how well that last topic went?) but I will stand by that opinion.

#3 Posted by CornBREDX (4780 posts) -

They talk about that stuff on occasion, but ya I always enjoy when they talk about the old days of BBS networks, video games, and whatnot.
I also liked Brad mentioning how kids these days think things in the 90s were so different from now but really they were very similar (lower connection speeds, but the internet still existed for example). The 90s were not THAT drastically different from today.

Still wish I could find the terrible geocities website I made, but I wouldn't even know where to begin to look let alone what name I used to make it so I wouldn't really know what to even look for.

#4 Posted by Animasta (14648 posts) -

that stuff isn't topical though, not anymore. YOU just liked it, and that's completely fine, but don't even try and say BBS shit is 'topical'.

Talking about Sega Channel wouldn't exactly be topical either, would it?

This fucking stupid bullshit needs to stop. One of the main appeals of the Bombcast is off top discussion. If you want strictly relevant video game talk there are probably hundreds of other podcasts that you can easily find to do just that. Also, BBS talk and all that isn't even on topic or relevant so what are you even talking about.

#7 Posted by csl316 (8082 posts) -

The one after E3 when they talked about Tomb Raider sexism really made me wonder why I was even listening. Then the ham radio one where everything went insane happened, plus a month long streak of awesome casts. So that's nice.

#8 Posted by Barrock (3525 posts) -

I zoned out during the BBS discussion. Same with the ham radio.

I was completely lost during that whole thing. I was born in '95. So I totally know what fapping in the 90's was.

Also, can anyone catch me up on what exactly they were talking about with Dust? They just started talking about furries out of the blue.

There's a pretty big thread on the board about people hating the art because it features animals that are human-like and it reminds them of furries which they hate.

Go look at the comments in the quick look. There were a lot of people just dismissing the game because there were anthropomorphic animals.

Isn't the Sega Channel a platform for video games? Isn't this a podcast about video games?

I'm actually not sure. I don't venture over to GAF but it wouldn't surprise me if it was the same over there.

I think the guys were kind of shocked that there's this excellent game out and some people just won't play it because it has art that reminds them of furries.

sega channel is as relevant to console games today as BBS'es are to PC gaming today was all I'm sayin. I don't care about relevance or not on the bombcast but it is a little hypocritical to just call something relevant because you liked the discussion.

Indeed. I insist you guys discuss the merits of Sega Channel next podcast.

On topic: Holy murphy Sega Channel sucked but was so amazing at the same time. It seemed so amazing when I was little but thinking back, wow was it terrible. I just remember being little and playing Boogerman and having my mind blown BECAUSE THERE WAS NO BOOGERMAN CARTRIDGE IN MY GENESIS. AARRRGGGGGHHHH

Agreed, I would love to have Will Smith more often on the show. Ironically he played and talked about more games than the rest of the guys. It's cool that he just decided to breeze through Darksiders 1 while sleepy-bear Brad is constantly half finishing games and the rest of the crew can't talk about them because Brad might still go back and finish Half Life 1 someday so no spoilers.

Early 'net talk and other tech stuff is the most interesting off-topic stuff to me because I grew up on the tail-end of that era, aware of its existence but of the opinion that it was too frickin' nerdy and never having access to it myself. I didn't have the internet until early cable modem days, and being a huge geek for the past decade + of my life, I feel bad for what I missed out on.

I don't mind off-topic since it makes the show longer, but I will always prefer them talking about games versus anything. I'm an idiot, though, and know next to nothing about computers, pre-NES video games, or really, most technical nerd stuff.

I can't imagine being under 20 listening to this podcast. At least I get the out-dated pop culture shit.

@killr0y: I fully agree with the OP. I listen to the Bombcast on my ipod when I go to sleep. Who gives a shit if the artist draws porn in his spare time, there was far more hate for there being animals than there was for the art style. You can CTRL-F furry in the comments in the quick look and have over 50 results for a page.

It was a lot of nostalgia stuff, which was great for me because I haven't thought about stuff like mirc in a long time, but I can see someone without that nostalgia being frustrated by lack of substantive discussion.

#48 Edited by Peanut (953 posts) -

I think it's great when they go into era specific tangents, because it dates them in a way it's been hard to date people who cover games and we're finally starting to round that bend. The Bomb Squad is getting older and becoming more and more out of touch with "the youth" as it were. Starting to get a bit crotchety about things and bit more nostalgic about dumb bullshit from 20 years ago. I think that'll be an awesome day, though. The day the Bombcast becomes the video game podcast for old people talking about the early 90's and the Willennium. It's hard to think about it, because the medium is so young, but it's also incredibly fascinating. There are kids who are complete functioning human beings who've never lived without the INTERNET. At some point a game podcast was understood, at least to an extent, by everyone who could (or would) listen to it, but now that there are people becoming fully self aware in world where video games and the Internet and iPhones are so ubiquitous, it becomes harder for those tangents that head down memory lane to satisfy the entire audience of people who play games and have the ability to comprehend on the level of a fully grown human being.

I guess what I'm trying to say is we're all getting older and slowly dying and now I'm super depressed. Thanks for reminding me of my mortality, Giant Bomb. You old fucks.

So, HAM radio is boring but BBS boards are not?

You're a hypocrite and you know it.

Let me school your ignorant ass:

BBS's often contained multiplayer turn-based "online" games, i.e. Pimp Wars, Trade Wars, and the medieval one whose name escapes me at the moment. Furthermore, BBS's were where people uploaded & downloaded games to their computers. On top of that, some BBS's offered telnet access to the early Internet before the web existed, providing a gateway to mainframe MMO games called MUDS. The BBS scene of the 80's & early 90's is what introduced MANY people to gaming. More importantly, many of the crackers/hackers/coders of that era are the people who are designing/programming the very games you are enjoying today.

Now you explain to me, you awesome genius, how this is just as insignificant a gaming topic as HAM radio?

You being ignorant of the topic doesn't make me a hypocrite.
