I've been a member here for just under a year, but I'm ashamed to admit I just discovered how awesome the Bombcast is during E3 '11. I Started listenind religiously after that, but I feel like I missed a lot of cool (and crazy) stuff. So I'm picking up with the first Giant Bombcast and listening to all of them from the start. I've already listened to the 2009 and 2010 year end debates, but am going to listen to them again when they come up in order so I can hear how people's opinions evolved over the course of the year. I expect I can knock out 4 or 5 a week, plus keeping current.

So am I crazy?

Go for it, you won't have reason to be bored for months now.

#3 Posted by mangomonger (72 posts) -

when i started driving a long distances the bombcast is perfect listening. I also liked hearing about games that i missed and and am able to pick up for cheap.

#4 Posted by HistoryInRust (6600 posts) -

You're crazy.

But it's something I've thought about doing, too, even though I've been listening since the start. It'd be nice to hear them talk about games that I didn't play at the time but had returned to after the fact.

I did the same thing back when I decided to start listening to it.

Hell nah. Still listen to those classics. Relevancy is for the birds.

#11 Posted by spazmaster666 (2065 posts) -

I end up re-listening to the older Bombcasts on a regular basis (basically whenever I'm playing a game since I've gotten to a point where I don't play games without any background audio) and also whenever I need to drive long distances. So I've probably listened to each Bombcast as least two or three times.

not as crazy as  @Matthew

Because two exclamation marks means you're super serial about it!

I have this weird goal of going through each show and taking copious notes, as this whole college thing has taught me. You can find all of the previous entries in this series via my blog, the Bombcast forum, or simply by searching up top. Whenever there is pertinent discussion on a given topic/game/person, I'll do my best to link that individual Breakdown to that particular page.

This is a fluid list. Beta as its popular to be known as. Things are going to be dynamic, pertaining to formatting and such, until I get a feel for how things are going to turn out. Categories may be added, renamed, or simply taken away on 'cast to 'cast basis. Let me know if you see something wrong! This is as much mine as it is yours!

Legend:

  • Voices - obvious enough, who's in the podcast
  • Reviewed - initially going to be reserved for the taste testing they did early on in the series, will see how things turn out later when they start phasing it out
  • Movies mentioned - despite being a videogame-centric podcast, these guys have some serious debates on movies and people/ideas pertaining to them
  • Games mentioned - games/game series mentioned on the 'cast. Listed if the game has some type of discussion or context behind it, not simply if name dropped
  • Companies Mentioned - these guys spit knowledge about companies like nobodies business. best to catalog it all to be held against them
  • Names dropped - much like the games mentioned, people mentioned if it pertains to the 'cast
  • Out of context quotes - the tiny crazy bits we all love our boys saying. taken directly out of context makes it even more hilarious
  • Timestamps-the parts of the 'cast that are fairly easy to distinguish with Ryans segway ability. Oft times these will seamless lead into a bigger discussion on the topic
  • Definitive quotes - the bits where they're all business, and give their honest opinion/prediction on a topic. If you were to jump to a time in the 'cast, these would be it
  • General notes - ideas I've garnered from the crew during the 'cast
  • ******* - multiple astricks denote a few minutes of the 'cast you'd do well listening to, if for nothing else than the hilarity/gravitas of it all
  • 1+ - denotes where they talk about a certain topic for more than a minute, instead of simply dropping the name in there for no discussion.

I did that at the start of this year when I started listening to the bombcast.... I just got caught up on the back log. (to be clear I have listening to the current ones when they comes up)

@Atramentous: I Started with the first APD show and the use of Skype just threw me off. I may go back to those as a bonus, but I just couldn't get past it.

#18 Posted by Chadster (334 posts) -

Not crazy at all. Those old bombcasts are some classic stuff, including an especially great string of episodes at the end of 2008 (the 12-02-08 episode is still my favorite of all time). So many legendary bits in that back catalogue: Hemp milk, djungelvral tasting, all of the episodes from when they went to TGS, Fuck You Uno, Marcus Fenix at home, hot sandos, scan the background... good times!

It's also cool because so many of the predictions they made on those older episodes ended up being scarily accurate.

Check out How To Build A Bomb; it's a video series of Jeff and Ryan building GiantBomb as a company from day 1.

I did the same thing about 3 months into being a regular listener. Its not too bad if you listen to it while getting things done.

@Red12b: Oh god! My real name is Matthew, making me wonder if...oh no...it can't be...I'm Tyler Durden.

#22 Posted by amorbix (32 posts) -

Yeah man. I joined around E3 last year, decided to hit up the archives over the summer. Not so much for 'getting all the in-jokes', but just because the bombcast is a quality show.

Evolution is fun to watch when it's sped up really fast.

#23 Posted by yoshimitz707 (2532 posts) -

Not really. I mean I've done it 3 times already.

I'm sort of doing this too, when I'm at uni i can't really listen to it due to time, so i've got a few months worth to go through... but i lagged behind due to holidays and i go back to uni wednesday, i'm gonna have a lot to listen to soon

#26 Posted by DeF (5216 posts) -

@Asmo917: it's funny, I just started going back to arrow pointing down and catching up myself last week. I think I started listening to the bombcast in 2009 sometime so I have missed at least a year.

#27 Posted by CitizenKane (10682 posts) -

I went through the first 100 episodes of the Persona 4 Endurance Run in 2 weeks.

No, you're not crazy.
#28 Posted by Maystack (928 posts) -

I thought about doing this but instead I just listened to the 'Best of' series on youtube. Still waiting on best of '10 because I missed the first half of those.

#29 Posted by muralbat (157 posts) -

Its a good thing to do to use up time travelling. I start my new job in 2 weeks and plan to listen too all the screened, tested and giantbombcasts I've missed (intentionally) for the past 4 months, should keep me going for a good little while! After they are finished I plan to watch the Persona 4 Endurance run (which I never got around to seeing at the time)

#30 Posted by buttle826 (139 posts) -

I did this a while back, but I was in high school and had more free time than I could manage. If you are in college, then you might be a little bit crazy.

@Asmo917: Well if my maths correct you've got  19 days, 9 hours, 43 minutes and 4 seconds of Bombcast to be entertained by.
#32 Posted by CaptainObvious (2990 posts) -

You so crazy.

#33 Posted by Rolyatkcinmai (2762 posts) -

I listened to all the ones from early 2009 and earlier that I had missed when I decided to play the 1,000+ race Forza 3 career mode.

#34 Posted by GaspoweR (4130 posts) -

Its good for killing time while doing chores or any mundane stuff that doesn't require too much concentration. Time flies by fast when listening to the Bombcast.

#35 Posted by ComradeKhan (696 posts) -

I did the same thing. I started about a year ago so i didn't have quite as long of a backlog as you to get through, but it was definitely worth it. I usually listen to the old ones while i'm doing something else, like grinding achievement points in a game i've already beaten or something like that. It really helped to give me some more context to the history of the site, what they are all about, what their likes and dislikes are, etc. I also went back and played some old games that they talked about.

#36 Posted by Turambar (7160 posts) -

Done it more than a few times. Go for it, it'll be fun.

#37 Posted by Jolt92 (1644 posts) -

I've done the same thing. It's a pretty insane thing to do, but time flies by, and they're pretty much all great!

Go for it duder.

#38 Posted by busted1der (248 posts) -

@Asmo917: You could always look for the "Best of the Bombcast" MP3s. They're shorter and are very funny.

#39 Posted by Slaker117 (4856 posts) -

Yes, yes you are. But do it anyway.

@Asmo917: You are not alone. I started listening back in 2010, loved it so much that I started from the beginning. I still kept listening to the current ones as and when they came out though... until finally the podcast on the first list was the same as the latest one!
#41 Posted by Grilledcheez (4006 posts) -

You're crazy

#42 Posted by Soap (3746 posts) -

As some one who has listened to every bombcast from start to the most current 3 times already, your not crazy.... not by a long shot :P

#43 Posted by Diablos1125 (188 posts) -

I've always wanted to do this since I missed the whole first year. I've gone as far as 2 months back just so I could listen to every single podcast and stay up to date

#44 Posted by Sign (304 posts) -

Since we are talking about going back to the start, this seems like a good place to ask. What is the meaning of the "Arrow Pointing Down" podcast name? I don't remember it being mentioned on the podcast itself and I assume it was explained when they first launced the blog.

#45 Posted by masternater27 (930 posts) -

Frankly, I'm a bit jealous. As somebody who listened to them on Gamespot and immediately started listening from Arrow Pointing Down and has never stopped I wish I could listen to episodes I've never heard before ha.

I did exactly this, when I had no current podcast to listen to I just went back. After a few months I had gone through everything from the APD casts to the latest. There are some really awesome episodes in the backlog. You wont be disappointed!

#47 Posted by rentfn (1377 posts) -

not crazy at all. I listened to two years of the hot spot when i started listening to it. Although at the start their podcast was 15 minutes...

#48 Posted by NickL (2260 posts) -

You are crazy, and it is a great idea if you have the time for it.

I have listened to it from the beginning and there are many little gems scattered throughout its entire history.

I would probably skip the new releases segments though as they are pretty meaningless now and not the best part of the bombcast.

#49 Posted by NickL (2260 posts) -

Arrow pointing down is the podcast that jeff and ryan started before they officially announced giantbomb.

I've listened to every Bombcast twice (up to 2011) and was on my third run when I decided to start listening to the other Whiskey Media podcasts instead. They're really good!

Do it!
