I thought Yoshi's Island was Super Mario World 2 basically. Maybe i saw Super Mario Bros. 3 at one point but I swear I read it that it's SMW2.

Super Mario World is called Super Mario World: Super Mario Bros. 4 in Japan.
 
And Yoshi's Island is called Super Mario: Yoshi's Island in Japan.  No Bros.  Thus, not a real SMB game.
 
Just like how the new Mario Kart game coming out is suddenly being called Mario Kart 7(because, really, it is), the next 2D SMB game should be called SMB7.

This is something that seems really even marginally interesting! Do go on!

According to the Super Mario Bros. franchise page, you not only missed more than a few titles, but also made a mistake including Super Mario World.

I feel like bumping this since the whole Yoshi's Island controversy started relates to this topic directly. :p

Anyway, since I first posted this topic, there's been two more NSMB games. So they'd basically be:

New Super Mario Bros. 2 = Super Mario Bros. 7
New Super Mario Bros. U = Super Mario Bros. 8

So I think Nintendo would be totally justified if they just released it's next side scrolling 2D Mario game Super Mario Bros. 9.
