I didn't actually hard stop at the door into the goddamn Subway!

It was the thing where he was just a couple steps behind me as I went in to the door, so I slowed down and let my fingers linger on the door enough that it wouldn't close towards him. Typically the person behind here would put their own hand on the door and the person in front could continue, right? It wasn't a full-stop-please-go-ahead-sir kind of a door hold.

And thanks for calling Toronto T-dot, Ryan. That's the goddamn worst.

Great work, seriously. Thanks for ruining everything for everyone. Couldn't have just held the door like a normal concierge, could you?

Yep, that was great. Actually I liked the entire Bombcast and Patrick was really good on this one I thought.

That must be some sort of asshole thing that only Torontonian's do. Be a proper polite Canadian next time.

The trick is not to hold it and expect them to take the pressure off your hand. I learned that so my thing is I push the door so they will then have to catch it and I still continue on my way. If it hits them, great, I wouldn't know because I'm getting my fuckin sandwich by then.

That's what I assumed happened, especially when the email said that that sped past you. I don't know why they interpreted it the way they did

I know what you mean and if by the time the person gets up to the door they don't hold it themselves I would probably continue on and let go of the door. No one has done that to me though; they always say thanks as they grab the door and I say no problem and move on.

Oh okay. Yeah, if you're doing the doorman-method of holding the door, then of course they're going to go ahead of you. If you did that and then they hung around so you could go ahead, I'm pretty sure the two of you would have to start making-out. Them the rules.

That guy is a dick then. When I hold the door from behind, I kind of block the doorway or only crack it so they have no choice but to open the door wider, but then again, I've never had that happened to me.

I'm really surprised some people haven't experienced the same door-holding procedures as some others have.

And yeah, this is how it would usually go. Half-mouthed "thanks" and move on. Not explicitly taking advantage of my mostly empty polite gesture.

If you hold the door open in such a way that the person entering can casually pass without having to touch the door (i.e. they didn't have to do some sort of sprint/juke move to get through the door as it's closing), then you've let them ahead of you in line. That's just the cost of being polite sometimes, but at least you can go to sleep at the end of the day knowing that you aren't an asshole and maybe if you're lucky the universe will see fit to reward your good karma (however in my experience, that usually doesn't happen...).

Also, on a vaguely related note:

I do dislike it when you're still several feet away from the door, but someone you don't know holds it for you anyway. So you're like, pressured to jog or else you're the asshole. You never want to jog, either.

Ryan is a diva, YOU should hold the door for HIM.
