is it worth it to listen to the old podcasts?

#1 Posted by Brianofthewoods (14 posts) - 5 months, 7 days ago

Im somewhat new to Giant Bomb and really love the podcast and was wondering if its worth going back and listening to the 300+ episodes, i understand that it references past episodes less than something like TalkRadar but is it worth the time to listen to them all?

Do you like quality entertainment? Deep, thought provoking discussion?

#3 Posted by Slab64 (964 posts) - 5 months, 7 days ago

is it worth posting in the old "is it worth listening to the old podcasts?" thread you made before this one? because this one is a poll, its obviously superior

#4 Edited by cyraxible (679 posts) - 5 months, 7 days ago

Yes, they're still hilarious, the discussion is still good, and despite that they're talking about older games it is still interesting.

Only once you run out of the backlog what do you do then? :(

#5 Posted by JordanaRama (100 posts) - 5 months, 7 days ago

If you decide to do so, you are in for a treat.

#6 Posted by IAmADwagon (43 posts) - 5 months, 7 days ago

Yes, yes it is.

Oh man this poll is the best. EDIT: WHO THE FUCK RUINED THE PERFECT YES, IT WAS GLORIOUS!

And if you had not guessed it yet the answer is yes. While some of the stuff might be outdated, hearing the guys talk about older stuff is always great, and they never stop being funny IMO.

#9 Posted by mosespippy (2605 posts) - 5 months, 7 days ago

It depends on what you come to the bombcast for? Is it for timely news and talk of the latest video game releases? Then no, don't go back. If it's for Jeff and the crew telling dumb stories of Chris with the white car or HAM radio then yes, go back and listen to old episodes. It also depends on what sort of available time you have. 600 hours is a lot and will likely take you the better part of a year to get through.

If you have the time, go ahead.

I've been plowing away at a rate of about one a day for the last few weeks, and I'm still enjoying it. I've been listening since late 2010; I'm pretty sure my first Bombcast is the one where they start talking about Fable III, which was an amazing place to start.

If you just want the funniest bits, dig through thepunishert's YouTube channel or listen to the This Year podcast collections. If you go the This Year route, listen through the three or so years of the Hotspot, also, 'cause that's still some great Jeff/Ryan/Brad/Vinny/Rich action.

Absolutely. In my opinion the bombcast was better when it was the original 4.

#14 Posted by Brianofthewoods (14 posts) - 5 months, 7 days ago

Sounds good, I'll put away some time during the holidays to get started

#15 Posted by Slag (1831 posts) - 5 months, 7 days ago

I'd argue 2010 was the best year of the bombcast so far.

They all hold up really really well. Perfectly well if you remember the games and stories of the time.

It's pretty neat to go back and hear speculations on the future and compare it to what actually happened

Yes. Also did you really need to make 2 topics for the very same question?

#17 Posted by Scrumdidlyumptious (1575 posts) - 5 months, 7 days ago

The earlier Bombcasts used to be even better than it is now.

This, however, is nowhere to be found. Please try elsewhere.

Sure. What else are you going to do?

#22 Posted by TranceQuina (104 posts) - 5 months, 6 days ago

I'm actually listening to older stuff year by year and writing down time marks so I can eventually splice together personal "Bombcast Highlights" files to listen to or maybe show to other gamer friends of mine.  Also gonna splice together all the DSi Ware and WiiWare stuff at some point.

But yeah, I still get lots of enjoyment out of older Bombcasts.  Great laughs and discussions to keep me occupied at work.

#23 Posted by Shaunage (439 posts) - 5 months, 6 days ago

There are some I've listened to five times. It's always a quality discussion, and it's always pretty funny.

#24 Posted by jewunit (971 posts) - 5 months, 6 days ago

I enjoy listening to the old Game of the Year podcasts. I occasionally listen to older podcasts when I finish games that they talked about in depth.

#25 Posted by JazGalaxy (1102 posts) - 5 months, 6 days ago

If you're interested in listening to old bombcasts, I'd reccomend going to http://www.thisyearcollection.org/ and listening to their "this year" collection for the bombcast.

Basically the site aggregates the "best moments" of different podcasts by year and lumps them into one big several hour long podcast.

It's the best way to go back and experience The Hotspot if you've never heard it.

Obviously, "Best of" is entirely subjective

Holy shit man, that is an epic undertaking. If you ever finish it, please be sure to post it on the forums (or just send it to me ^-^) for everyone to enjoy. That would be pretty damn awesome to have on hand.

And I suspect if you tried you could turn it into a group project on the forums here and relieve a little of your personal workload. Just a thought.

#27 Posted by WiqidBritt (545 posts) - 5 months, 6 days ago

you could possibly get by with highlights on youtube.

There;s a pretty comprehensive playlist of just such a thing on youtube, though sadly its only for 2008 and 2009. If you compile something past those two years, it'd be great if you can upload it.

@ZanzibarBreeze: Oh wow, thanks! did not realize that site existed. Looking around it a bit, that is very cool.

#32 Posted by cthomer5000 (390 posts) - 5 months, 4 days ago

Yes, but i would suggest starting with the episode Brad and Vinny join. It's pretty rough early on IMHO.

I say this as someone who started checking out the site in early 2011, and only started listening to the earlier stuff about 6 months ago.

#33 Posted by panvixyl (300 posts) - 5 months, 4 days ago

Just go listen to all the "Best Of" compilations on youtube. Or the "This year" recaps on iTunes.

I actually came to post just this! To anyone interested in listening back to the old stuff, the This Year Collection podcasts are perfect. I would also suggest listening to the Hotspot compilations as well. They're definitely well worth it and very similar in tone to the Bombcast.
