Hey! It's time for another Bombcast best-of. Here's the blurb: The Giant Bombcast is a gaming podcast, but the games aren't really important. Jeff and Ryan lament the state of franchise pizza restaurants in Petaluma. Vinny develops an interest in ham radio and becomes a father. Brad needs a new bed. Patrick does jukebox trolling at a bar. Above all that, Jeff tunes into clandestine radio broadcasts. Make no mistake, there's talk about games—namely, the hate some of the cast has for NiGHTS into Dreams and Jak 2—but there's also talk about jumping into swimming pools full of food, Storage Wars, Antiques Roadshow, space catapults, parking, and men named Chris that drive white cars. This is the Giant Bombcast: an eclectic and unbeatable grab bag of talk that never fails to entertain. Meanwhile, back at the ranch, the buzzer buzzes...

The show is in two parts. Download Part 1, or Download Part 2, or subscribe to our RSS or iTunes through whatever software you use. Also: Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr. You can find timestamps and more information about it at our site. (I tried pasting all the stuff in but the formatting went all weird, so there's that.)

I hope you guys enjoy it as much as I had fun making it (and then subsequently listening to it). Tell a friend!

Thanks!

Can't believe some of you guys take so much of your time to things like this. Thanks a whole bunch.

These podcasts are great, thanks a lot for the effort, duder. My particular favourites are the Loveline collections, i've learnt a lot through them (I think?).

#5 Posted by Stonyman65 (2599 posts) -

Great! I've been listening to the last ones over the break. Glad to see you've got 2012 up so quick. Rock on!

#6 Posted by natetodamax (19176 posts) -

Ooooh, so it's your podcast that also comes up every time I search for Giant Bombcast in iTunes. Didn't realize! I'll definitely listen to his highlight reel.

#7 Posted by ZanzibarBreeze (3069 posts) -

Thanks for the compliments!

After years of listening to Loveline, I also think (or I should hope) that I've learned a lot as well. We'll have a new one in the first week of February, by the way.

Awesome! You should check out some of our other gaming stuff (and even non-gaming stuff) too; I'm sure you'll like it, especially The HotSpot stuff. (Though those first episodes are kind of rough from an editing standpoint -- I've got the process down pretty well now, but I had no idea what I was doing back then. I was just throwing clips together in whatever way seemed to make sense.)

It's interesting that you say that -- from what I can tell, we don't get much search traffic from people looking for the Bombcast, but we get a TON of traffic from people looking for This American Life. Our This American Life best-ofs are some of our highest rated, almost exclusively on the strength of people searching for the original podcast. I wonder how that stuff works.

#8 Posted by Stonyman65 (2599 posts) -

@ZanzibarBreeze: Oh yeah, I've got all the Hotspot stuff too, as well as some others. Keep up the great work duder!

I have to drive from Baton Rouge to Pittsburg this weekend. I was worried I would run out of podcasts by late Saturday. Not now. Thanks for this!

#10 Posted by Ted_Mosby (73 posts) -

What better way to fill up my brand new iPad than to download 8 hours of the Giant Bombcast?

#11 Posted by vegetashonor (565 posts) -

Where are the other ones if someone would be so kind to help me out? :)

#12 Posted by natetodamax (19176 posts) -

I'm halfway through part 1 and it's really excellent! I like how each discussion flows nicely into the next with no noticeable breaks.

Why do these keep getting longer? 2013 is going to be like twelve hours.

I dont know, doing something like this might get you launched into the sun.

Great job anyway!

Thanks a million duder!

I found myself having missed out on most of the podcasts in the last third of the year, so this is very good for me to catch up. Nice one!

#22 Posted by Pazy (2561 posts) -

Dude, thanks for more of this. Im loving the "This Year" content, I have great memories of old Hotspot and stuff but I find it really hard to go back and listen to stuff in its original form. I especially love when you take all the clips relating to one story from months apart and put them into one section.

Cant wait for more!

@ZanzibarBreeze: This is really great, started listening to it this morning and its just great.

@ZanzibarBreeze: Awesome work as always!

...And slightly off topic are there any plans for doing old Retronauts stuff?

#26 Posted by Dethfish (3630 posts) -

I've listened to all of these best of bombcasts now. They're pretty awesome and a good way to spend 8+ hours. Also, for some reason I find the intro guy's voice to be strangely soothing. It's weird.

#27 Edited by ZanzibarBreeze (3069 posts) -

Thank you all for your kind words and compliments!

@HarlechQuinn said:

I desperately want to do something for Retronauts, but I have no idea how to do it. Because each episode was focused on a specific topic, and there's very little in common between each episode, it would take a lot of work setting up each clip and explaining what the guys are talking about. One way of doing it would be for me to narrate the entire podcast -- for instance, to say "now we're going to hear some highlights from their discussion of survival horror," and then come in twenty minutes later and say, "Now they're going to talk about the Sega Saturn," and so on.

The short answer is, I do want to do a best-of for Retronauts, and we will find a way to do one.

Let me plug the episode we just released today, which is for a science podcast called The Skeptics' Guide to the Universe. It is to science podcasts what the Giant Bombcast is to gaming podcasts, which is to say that it's the best mix of comedy and serious discussion that you'll find in the genre. Here's the blurb: "Standing as the longest running and most successful science podcast, The Skeptics' Guide to the Universe balances informative and fresh discussion with a lighthearted, conversational rapport between its five panelists. What are numbers stations? Can neutrinos go faster than light? What's up with the ghost box? Are we living in a simulated universe? Why would a man eat another man's face? Steve, Bob, Jay, Rebecca and Evan address all these pertinent questions with aplomb. The Skeptics' Guide to the Universe is one of the most important podcasts there is, a bold confrontation of a world teeming with fanatics and frauds."

I think numbers stations featured heavily in podcasts in 2012. Anyway, here's a link to part 1, part 2, and the original post. If you like it, let us know. There are two more best-ofs for the SGU on our site.

Thanks! We'll have another Loveline in the first week of February (the 4th, to be precise). Until then, enjoy this:

I know I post this every time somebody brings up Loveline, but I just can't get over this call. "THE FLOOR IS WHERE YOUR FEET GO."

#36 Posted by HaltIamReptar (2029 posts) -

@ZanzibarBreeze: Jesus Christ didn't 2012 end like yesterday? You are an absolute fucking god amongst men.

The only complaint I have is that the 1UP Yours ones are a little jarring. That podcast is not nearly half as good as I remember it. Can you fix my rose tinted glasses please?

#37 Edited by ZanzibarBreeze (3069 posts) -

@HaltIamReptar: What if I superimpose, like, the sound of rainbows and sparkles over the whole thing? :)

I still think 1UP Yours is great, but you make a good point about these things generally. I've definitely experienced that for other podcasts.

God damnit, stop! You're feeding my desire to play useless games that I can podcast my way through instead of the games I actually care about experiencing on their own. Damn you!!!!!

This is why you should do what I do which is just play sports games and open world games and practically nothing else.

Here's our new episode that we released just now; the final show I'll post in this thread. It's a comedy podcast called Uhh Yeah Dude that is amazing. I love this show. If you've found out about new podcasts through us before, then you need to pick this one up. It will not disappoint. Blurb: " This is a podcast where two American Americans save America from herself. Seth Romatelli and Jonathan Larroquette round up the week's issues, providing a forum for society to engage the most critical and divisive issues. Men get duped into DUIs by attractive undercover female cops. Michael Masden's poetry gets read. A grandmother sues Apple after she walks into an Apple Store's glass door. Samsung equips its televisions with cameras. Derek Jeter gives gift baskets full of signed baseballs and candy to women he's spent the night with. Stephen Tyler appears on Oprah. Uhh Yeah Dude is social commentary at its finest." Download it here.

There are only so many open world games, and PC sports games are... non-existent. Especially the ones that interest me. Which isn't many of them.

I have been listening to your This Year podcasts for The Hotspot, Giant Bombcast, and GFW Radio since you first posted them on the forums here. Your compilations are awesome, but I wish you had a compilation of Jeff's many loud "For more on these and other stories from the world of video games, check out Gaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaammmmmmmmmmmeeeeeeeeeeeeeespppppppppppppppoooooooooooooootttttttttttttt.com". Because those are awesome.
