Same here. It only happens with Giant Bomb, so I'm pretty sure it's something wrong on their part. (I'm not at home, I can't post screenshots or a speed test, but trust me on this one :P)

I have these issues as well.

Bump. AGAIN.

Any fucking chance of anyone doing anything about this?!

#61 Posted by GrumpyOldMan (12 posts) -

Video's consistently stutter after 10-15 minutes of buffering with no problems. Once stuttering begins, it's 50/50 chance the video just breaks and the div goes back to the big play button. Clicking the play button restarts the video instead of returning to previous position in video. This has been the status quo since the redesign went live.

#62 Posted by DrShilliams (86 posts) -

Similar problem for me again right now.

BUMP BUMP BUMP

Is there any point to this forum if problems aren't addressed? Ridiculous.

#64 Posted by GeneralDAS (49 posts) -

Same problem. It's especially frustrating when the video resets because the seeker bar goes in such wide intervals.

This is silly.

#66 Edited by villainy (509 posts) -

@foliorumviridum: Yes. Repeatedly bumping a thread that never leaves the top 10 of this forum is silly. This issue doesn't affect me currently but did for months until they switched providers. I like to watch this thread to see how @mrpibb et. al. plan on dealing with it. Instead I keep seeing your name with nothing to add.

Having the exact same problem since the new site launch. Came here to see if anyone else was having the same issue, sad to see that nothing has been done about it.

#69 Edited by skurk (38 posts) -

Hello. Currently trying to watch a TNT, and it played fine for a minute and now buffers for 30 seconds for every 10-20 seconds.

I'm in Denmark, am able to watch the YouTube videos flawlessly, but of course premium content is not on YouTube.

Sometimes content will work fine for an hour or so and then starts buffering and being unwatchable like what's happening now.

This has been going on for months now, and 90% of the time I am also unable to watch any trailers. For some reason original content that is not subscriber based usually works fine, but will sometimes also grind to a halt after a random period of time, after working flawlessly for X minutes.

As it stands now I do not see any reason to renew my subscription if I can't use it for anything.

There has got to be some reason for this, and if it's because of a lack of funds I am sure you could plead your case, make a kickstartery thing and most likely get the expenses covered in a jiffy. The people here seems nice like that, I mean they send you guys stuff all the time.

Maybe one of the cables are tangled or something. You should check under the tables. Once a friend of mine put a clothespin on my Ethernet cable and I couldn't download any russian porn until the next time I had to do my laundry!

Apologies for the lack of updates here - these issues affect even some staff members on our home connections, so we are definitely aware of it. We're still trying to track down the problems with Akamai, but it's a bit tough since we're dealing with a third party. We've put in/are still putting in some logging to try and track down why the performance can be so bad over particular connections. Keep letting us know if you have issues and I'll keep bugging the engineers about it. I know they're working on it but I don't know if there's an ETA on a fix. Sorry for the lack of news.

I have increased my network buffer to 512MB from 20MB in XBMC and this helps a lot since now I can buffer a lot while the connection is working great and then I will survive when it doesn't. But it also seems that I usually get proper speed most of the time now anyways.

#75 Edited by JoshS (409 posts) -

Have there been any changes regarding this? I haven't been able to watch videos on the site, or listen to the podcast from the player on the podcast page since Monday (May 6).

#76 Posted by MariachiMacabre (6937 posts) -

I've been having issues on the mobile site with this lately (iPhone 4S). No matter what options I choose the video stops suddenly.

#77 Edited by planetary (338 posts) -

Streaming is still terrible. It's been pretty shitty since they moved over to using the CBSi player, with only a few decent performance areas here and there.

Is anyone from the site technical staff reading this, or aware of the issue?

#78 Edited by Gloobus (31 posts) -

Having the same issue as everyone above. When the video starts to chop and freeze, I take a look at my network task manager and it's using 0.4% of the listed 100 Mbps connection. So it's not even trying to download video data to buffer.

#79 Edited by FMinus (368 posts) -

Same here, goes for about a month now like that. I'm from Europe and I can really barely watch anything archived or uploaded. Live stuff goes so or so, it works fine more or less, most of the time, but as said archived stuff or uploaded trailers are just buffering/loading you name it play for 2 seconds and buffer again.

Speedtests, one is local, one is from across the pond.

#80 Posted by Rorie (2094 posts) -

@planetary: Yep, it's a source of constant discussion and frustration on our end - it affects some of engineers when they're at home, as well. As best we can tell this is a problem with Akamai (our content delivery network), and we're trying to determine what we can do about it. We put in some new logging tools to see precisely what's happening when the video player functions poorly and are going to be looking closely at what those reports say.

Obviously when video doesn't work on a site like GB that is a crappy situation, and we obviously want to fix it. I wish I could give you guys some kind of ETA on this, but all I can say right now is that we're definitely aware of the problems and are actively looking into it. Sorry for the frustration!

@rorie: Thanks Rorie. That's all we wanted to hear. I'm glad to see you are on top of posting in stuff like this. It's really frustrating when a site that was built on its openness is so silent about problems that are affecting everyone. Fingers crossed that this gets fixed sooner rather than later.

I'm also having a newly terrible experience with Akamai today. Tried FF and Chrome, and in both cases recently uploaded videos (Daily Dota, Bioforge) are downloading between 1-5KB/s on my 30+mbps cable.

One strange thing that seems to happen frequently when I'm streaming longer videos is that the "pause" and "play" state seems to flip on its own. When I start playing the video, the video is loading at full speed, saturating my connection, but sooner or later it just stops loading. Looking at OS X's Activity Monitor, the network bandwidth usage drops to zero. However, if I now pause the video, it starts loading again at full speed, and continues loading until I press play, at which point the bandwidth graph drops to zero again.

This only seems to happen after maybe 10-20 minutes, but seems more likely to happen the longer the video is.

It's a real bummer. Since the redesign, I have basically stopped watching any videos on GB because its so bad. I'm not going to cancel my premium, but this issue does make it all but useless and its been on going for months without any light at the end of the tunnel.

Tonight has been the worst experience thus far, can't even get low quality video at all. No change to my setup since my last post.

Watching the cutting floor Iceland video was a bit of a pain yesterday w/ the HTML5 player. It was fine for like 20-30 minutes in, but then it would stop the video and shift back to the beginning of it. Trying to watch the last 10 minutes was mind numbingly frustrating. When I get home later today I'll post my speeds and tracert.

This is what happens to me. Sometimes a video will play just fine, and other times it will just stop, and start at the beginning when I hit play again. This happens with HTML5 just like the guy above. If I just do direct download of the file, it seems to be just fine. I'm in Denmark using Chrome and Windows 7

Videos were never great, but they were watchable before yesterday/today. I'm currently getting 40-60 KB/s downloading Unprofessional Fridays, and streaming is impossible on High.
