"Another 10 years" for WoW? No way. Not without a graphic overhaul.

Blizz has been doing small graphical updates over the years. It will never be bleeding edge obviously, but if you look at a screenshot of WoW from 2004 and one from MoP there's a huge difference.

One of the reason WoW's subscribers have dropped off is the latest expansion, Catalcysm, sucked. It was really hard early on and there wasn't very much to do at max level, which made a lot of people leave. MoP however, has a ton of new stuff for max level, it's definitely their largest expansion to date, and I bet it will being a lot of people back.

WoW graphics circa 2004

WoW graphics circa 2012

I don't think a major overhaul will ever happen, and it's not really necessary, they've been slowly updating things like water, cloth, and the models look much much better. Look at the Human race model compared to the Pandaren race model, there's a huge difference in quality.

@RedRoach: Oh wow, I played at release til WotLK (I THINK, can't remember exactly heh) and that second screenie is pretty impressive.

Why couldn't they do an overhaul? EQ1 did. I think it's one of the only reasons anyone still plays it, to be honest.

Every time the topic of MMOs comes up on this show, you guys paint this doom and gloom image for the future of the genre and keep talking about the next Blizz MMO as if you expect it to come out anytime in the near future. I'll put it this way, the next Blizz MMO is nowhere near even being unveiled; WoW is still going extremely strongly (10mil+) and with a new expansion (''panda box'' aka their biggest expansion yet) coming in the next couple of months which is pretty much guaranteed to boost the numbers up again. And elsewhere GW2 is looking like a very fresh and interesting prospect for the genre with a lot of buzz amongst MMO players. And that's just this year.

I thought the games that were in the flash sales were the same price? Walking Dead only went down to $15 didn't it?

I love how off topic they get, and yet stay on point for the most part. Amazing...its like how I think, never one direction.

They could but they're seem to prefer doing it piecemeal. In cataclysm they updates the old cities, Orgrimmar looks amazing now. And blizz is now working on new race models so that the orcs and dwarfs and such look just as good as the pandaren do. All the new stuff look amazing, it looks like it has been overhauled, the old stuff looks pretty bad but it's not worth all the effort to redo all the old stuff.

"Wicked", here in Boston, isn't "good", nor is it "bad". It's just a stronger version of "very". So, a thing can be wicked tall, or wicked good, or even wicked bad. It still slightly surprises me when I'm reminded it's a regional thing. It's just everyday speech, not even slang really, around here.

the Freespace games are open source and now look better than they did originally and definitely run on windows 7 thanks to modders. no idea about the other Descent games, though...

As with Quake 3, the engines are open source, the games themselves (assets etc.) are not. The core games must still be bought off GOG or something in order to use Open Freespace for instance. They are dirt cheap though.

@Ryan The best remedy for cold fries is to order them without salt in which they (the workers) then have to drop a new patch of fries and they come out all fresh/crispy. Well, that works at McDonald's.

You smart!

Ask for salt with meal, (usually comes that way, but i wouldn't trust them if they figuered out they were being led)) Don't need much salt anyways...

That's an old trick that doesn't work around here anymore. They caught on and started salting the individual cartons as they served them up, unless somebody requests otherwise.

I dont think Fez would be as popular as it is now if it were released on Steam. For one, popular gaming websites are more likely to review an xbla game vs an independent game on Steam.

Earthbound is a great example of a "fuck you" piracy protection thing. Pirated copies of that game had a significantly higher random encounter rate, making the game way more annoying to play. If you manage to trudge through this tedious, unbalanced version and make it to the final boss...

"fuck you." The game locks up, throws a screen about how bad piracy is and deletes all your saves. Pretty big dick move all things considered.

that's such a dick move that it goes beyond normal irritating drm and comes out the other side as pretty awesome/amusing.

In pirated The Settlers games, your iron smelters produced pigs instead of steel and your soldiers were pacifists.

I realize Vinny probably won't read this, but there are two buttons in the top left of the screen (right of the parts inventory) in Kerbal Space Program. One of those circles is the symmetry tool, and the smaller circle is the free place or snap-to-angle option.

Totally found those while playing last night!

Okay, awesome! If you haven't bought in yet, the purchased version of the game has a fair bit more going on for it than the free version, so if you found the free version fun enough, it's definitely worth the $18 for Space Planes alone.

Oh, and here's a link to all of the controls, there's a lot of helpful things in there for when you start orbiting, like hitting X to cut all thrust.

Posted by MordeaniisChaos

Oh boy, more uninformed bullshit on Windows 8. Even unfinished, the metro start menu is just as good as the old start screen, if not better because it recognizes that you use it so infrequently that just replacing it with a thing that does all of the same things, but then making it do a lot more as well. It works fine. And if you think DX12 is the only reason somsone would have for upgrading OS's, you're being silly. It's a good OS, and the improvements to the core OS are pretty great. I've used the release preview for a while now ,and you know what? It's like W7, but with a lot of cool new stuff.

And the reason people hate the metro shit is because people hate change and have no interest in seeing if it's actually shitty or not. Not because it's stupid.

Vinny, I think you can land on the moon, or at least I heard that it was a feature they wanted to implement, I got the demo after one of The goty top ten lists mentioned it (was it Walpow?)

EDIT: nope sorry it was Dan Teasdale

EDIT: #2 and no...you can't land on the moon... I know for certain that you can royally fuck the kerbals over and just shoot them far off into space like Voyager 1....

Here is something that I prepared earlier. . . .

ALL ROCKETS!
I love how every Kerbal apart from the commander is shitting themselves but the commander is like, "YEAH!!!"
All rocket stacks have parachutes, which may or may not be functional. . .
When it all goes wrong.....
Terribly terribly wrong

and that was my fun with KSP

You can totally land on both moons (there's two moons btw...one near the planet like our moon and one very far). I managed to take off from Kerbin, get a stable orbit around the planet, get myself an intercept trajectory with the moon, stable orbit around it, land on it (you can even get out of the spaceship in the latest version and walk around the surface), took off and came back to Kerbin and landed within 5-6km from the launch pad. TONS of fun.

If you haven't found it yet, try pressing M after you take off, this will take you to the map screen where you can see all the planets and more importantly your trajectory, orbit patterns and intecept path. Super usefull!

I suggest you watch some youtube videos, there's some stuff that people do that is totally CRAZY.

Oh and the 15$ paid version is totally worth it. There's a good jump in overall quality since the demo is an old version. The game is still developpement so they release builds from time to time with a bunch of new features. There is no economy system (they are planning on having one at some point). You can also download hundreds of different free parts on the game's forum. The game is open to mods and addons so the community is coming up with a ton of amazing stuff.

@MordeaniisChaos: Can I just type in stuff and press enter to launch stuff like in Win7? I haven't tried out 8 yet and I can't seem to find that anywhere.

But as far as the DX12 comment goes, the e-mail specifically talked about PC gamers. Yeah there might be some cool additions, but even if it's just $40 if there are no specific features I actually want I'd probably rather spend that money elsewhere.

I've always thought Christopher Nolan's non-Batman movies were better than his Batman movies. Memento is one of my all time favorite movies and Inception is better than anything in the Dark Knight Trilogy. The problem I always had with his Batman moves is they felt way too serious for their own good.
