The PC version shouldn't have released in this state, that is how bad it is.

In case anyone's wondering about the levelling up structure, the way it works is that the game has 100 levels before you 'accept promotion' which is basically the games way of prestiging. So you unlock all the weapons, mods etc by the time you get to level 100 and to continue levelling up you have to prestige. So you lose all your weapons again and then start from scratch levelling up from 101 - 200. It's essentially 100 levels (compared to say Modern Warfare 2's 70) and you have 10 prestiges which will take you up to level 1000. The only things that don't reset between each promotion/prestige are the calling cards/customisation pieces/weapon colours paint jobs that you've unlocked. Now if you want every single piece of customisation equipment then yeah it'll take you a long time unless you buy the pieces but you're unlocking every weapon/mod etc per 100 levels. I don't give a rats ass about customisation clothing so I'm happy enough with what the game gives me whilst playing.

As for the game itself I'm loving it. It's really fun, the gadgets are great and from my experience it's been very balanced so far. There's counters for everything from what I've seen and I've never felt that it's been the other player being cheap. However time will tell and you just never know if someone will come up with some really cheap combination. I really hope this game lasts for a while.

Played some of the demo last night. I love what the grappling hook does to the flow of the game.

It's too bad the PC version is jacked, because a good PC release could have outlived the console versions for a while. As it is I'm hesitant to get the game because I feel that it will be dead before summer.

You're missing the point. The microtransactions only apply to cosmetic items and special items like XP boost. Yes, you have to play for a ton of hours to unlock everything, but that's also every other other persistent online shooter under the sun. And besides, considering you're more or less allowed to unlock whatever weapon or mod you want when you get an unlock key, you can more or less make your perfect class your first time unlocking the items.

But that is my point. Aren't those the same things you're paying for in games like Battlefield Heroes and such? Is the difference that you can unlock them by grinding? Is that true for the XP boost as well? And at what point does that distinction cease to matter? Those mascot thingies have ridiculous requirements, like level 700 or some crazy nonsense like that. And they are planning on selling premium costumes by the sounds of things.

And my other point is that grinding systems are fucking dumb and should burn in hell and die.

But kudos to them for at least not having a set unlock path. One of the things that makes BF3's grinding system a scourge.

Not to mention that thanks to GFWL half the planet can't buy this game from Steam, since GFWL supports only about 35 countries, and Steam wont sell or even show the game exists to anyone who's not from those said countries. I wanted to buy it, but no cigar, even if I search for the game - it just wont find it.

That said I could go to Direct2Drive and get it and other options, but I got my gaming library on Steam, don't want to fragment it more, now with Origin also in the mix. Microsoft just needs to remove their supported countries for GFWL, as this is just stupid for the PC market and I can tell that this shit came from Xbox Live.

Basically everyone who isn't from those 35 countries can't buy any game with GFWL from Steam, which is a lot of sales lost.

I really didn't like this game when i played the beta, it was just so overwhelmingly average in every way, that I felt no pull to keep playing it when I could play many of the other online shooters with progression systems like very multiplayer shooter has nowadays.  It's not that the game was bad, it's just that it literally had nothing to make me want to play it over other similar games, and the whole time I just thought "I could be playing that other game", and than I did.

I'm so glad I read this about the PC ATI issues. Not even going to bother if they fix it.

I played a couple of hours of this and I don't know, man. I don't get the appeal. Sure, the crazy premise is entertaining for a while but beyond that it's a poor man's TF2.

I really hate this game's style

It just seems awful in the worst way possible and not the least bit humorous. Tried the demo on 360 and it convinced me even more that I was correct.

Great refreshing style. I am so tired of DC superhero self-seriousness. Let's have a little fun with these fictions, why don't we? That could go for a lot of licensed content. I would be much more interested in a jedi/sith game that reveled in this kind of idiocy instead of the same Star Wars pathos.

From what I remember based on my time with Battlefield Heroes and Kuma/War, those games do sell weapons to the player, but they work like XP boost and other special items where you only get them for a certain amount of time.

I think the key difference with Gotham City Impostors is twofold. For one, sure, it's technically a "grinding system" in the strictest definition of the word, but I feel like the amount of grinding you actually have to do is vastly overstated. If you're on the winning team and constantly doing well for yourself, you'll usually earn around 40 costume coins per match; start doing poorly, and that drops down to around 15 coins per match. Considering the vast majority of items in the shop are in the low hundreds, you can basically afford to buy anything in the store after a handful of games. That's a crucial distinction to me between this and freemium; in the latter, I expect to have to spend hours doing something I didn't really want to do in the first place for coins or items or whatever, but in this, I play several games like I intended to in the first place and I can buy a new stupid hat for my Batman or Joker for my troubles. For two, I kind of just don't care. If people want to pay money to unlock the stupid Bat tightie-whities for their dude or get XP boost for an hour, what do I care? Remove that element, and it's still a great shooter with a ton of customization and neat playstyles that also just so happens to play better than any F2P game I've ever played (TF2 excepted, but that's also only been free for 10 months).

And yeah, the mascots have ridiculous requirements unless you pay for some of them, but that's the point. They're bonuses you get for hitting things like third and seventh prestige, and make you an easier target. I got the Catwoman mascot for free because I was in the beta, and I've never used it. If someone wants it, more power to them.

These aren't the problems with Gotham City Impostors. The problems are that the game is majorly busted on two different platforms between the ATI issues on PC and the mass stat resetting on PS3, and even the 360 version has stat reset issues too.

Does it matter that the pets have ridiculous requirements? Thats what they are there for, to show that you have been playing for a while.

And that is your opinion, some people, like me, actually enjoy grinding. It gives me something to do between games that don't have grinding. It's the reason I played WoW for so long and why I am looking forward to any Diablo like game that comes out.

And when you access the menu for mascots, they specifically say, "these make you a bigger target, but they also show that you've invested considerable time in this game."

His point is completely null and void.

I can appreciate the tone and general focus on humor that this and Saints Row 3 provide, but I really wish they were in games that I actually wanted to play. FPS and GTA clones aren't my thing unfortunately.

A surprisingly generous score for a game that had a TNT with Monolith employees pitching the game in the site's chat.

So what? They weren't there in the studio with Giant Bomb like a Quick Look EX.

So what? Just because they are not on the couch doesn't mean their bullshit sales pitch is any better. In fact you could say it's worse because they targeted gullible idiots in the chat and the Giantbomb moderators just let it happen.
You're clearly new to this community an these guys if you think that has any bearing on what the final review is.

Looks ridiculous and fun, but I wonder how long people will actually be playing it. Also, Office Bat.

Sorry friend, but you are the naive one if you actually think these guys are being bought by Monolith or anyone else. Brad enjoys the game. Move on.

@Detrian: Right. Feel free to head elsewhere if you think the guys are being paid off. You wont be missed.

Is this fucking clown serious? Haha! We've had other developers in and out of the forums and chat before. Nolan North even stopped by for a chat in regards to Uncharted 3 and guess what? That game didn't even get on the Game Of The Year list.

Oh, you're new and wouldn't know that.

Fuck off.

The idea of a multiplayer-only downloadable shooter is a sound one, offering a lower-priced, stripped-down version of that Call of Duty progression model for people who don't care about campaigns and just want to focus on the headshots and skill unlocks.

I... don't... care. Have fun with it, folks. I fell out of love with online gaming a looooong time ago.

I bought the game on PC, assuming it'd be the best version, and couldn't even start the game. It straight up will not launch from Steam, and GFWL doesn't seem to think it exists. Thanks WB. Too bad I didn't grab it on 360, I guess, as it seems really fun

Posted by XivSpew

I have a HD6870 in my system and I'm running the game with zero problems. This is honestly the first I heard about any problems...

Posted by sickVisionz

I'm glad this game is turning out to be pretty good. A lot of outlets slagged it during preview coverage because it was fun, silly, and lighthearted, which always seemed like odd things to knock a game for.

Posted by Oscar__Explosion

Out of the 8 hours I"ve been playing the game (on 360) I've only ran into two instances of dropped connections. Otherwise the game has been running fine and I haven't experienced any matchmaking problems.

Posted by TooSweet

I'm playing it and liking the game so far. The humor is good and the designs are cool too. I really enjoy that it's two crazy gangs in Gotham. I'm playing on the 360. I do notice that when in the lobby waiting for more players to join it just hangs and I have to leave and come back in to get it to work. Other than that it's great.

Posted by NovaSethyr

Gotham City Imposters is definitely unique in it's own little...special...way. I enjoy it and it's a nice way to play some overused multiplayer games.

Posted by Agikamike

Honestly, I think it's a little bit irresponsible to tag the PS3 and PC release in this. It's likely that Brad just played the 360 version, and with such start contrasts in performance and matchmaking across systems, it sends the wrong message. If I'm wrong, then fine, but seriously, just say you're reviewing the 360 version only if that's the case. I'd rather hear that 1 version is good than all 3 are and having that be wrong.

Posted by Suddenly_Susan

Can't wait to get my live account back so I can play this.

As much fun as I've had playing Gotham City Imposters, the technical issues keep pushing me away... Matchmaking on PC is a joke. Laggy matches with uneven teams (5v1 at one point) mean finding a decent game is impossible, and that's only when the matchmaking actually works. Most of the time I sit in an empty lobby until I eventually back out. These problems can be fixed with updates, and I hope it gets done, because I keep going back for more hilarious batty vs. clown insanity despite it all.

Posted by Jonnyflash80

Great game. I'm having a ton of fun with it, but the XBox version still has some matchmaking and disconnection issues on occasion.

Posted by Jonnyflash80

For all the people talking shit about this game that have not played it, get the demo then make your decision whether or not it is for you.

Posted by kafu288

This game is $22.95 in Australia and not worth it at that price

Excactly whatvI wanted in an fps, awesome :)

I enjoyed the demo somewhat but the hit detection felt off and it took a long time to find a game. I couldn't get a good grasp of how much damage I was doing to the enemy. I'm old.
