I don't feel like the write-up matches the score very well. The original Borderlands came out a long time ago, and a sequel should be more than just incremental updates.

Oh well, still picking it up.

Posted by Duffyside

Sounds like... MOREderlands... is more like it.

Posted by LoganHallfin

Sounds like sequel sickness strikes again, I'm sure I'll eventually pick this up for 15 bucks or less.

I have no problem waiting.

Posted by smashbrolink

Know what I've noticed?

Even with reviews as positive as this, they still tend to end on a negative.

Why is that?

Why is it so necessary to end on a negative?

To point out the flaws?

They do that adequately enough in the rest of the review.

Give us fans something to smile about instead of ending on a downer, sheesh....

Posted by probablytuna

As long as it's a better Borderlands then it's good enough for me. The two week delivery wait begins......

@smashbrolink: A lot of people tend to read the first few paragraphs and then the last few.

shared loot is quite a let down... also I kinda wish it just told me DPS.... sometimes I just don't feel like thinking about it

That frankly feels back-asswards to me, but what do I know, eh?

And yet, Diablo 3 somehow got a 5 from giant bomb, and actual points of criticism are made of Borderlands 2.

Fascinating how just More Of The Same only got BL2 four stars. But yet, More Of The Same With Fewer Features & No PVP & A Naked Cashgrab got five stars.

Could it be that Brad failed to properly review Diablo 3 and has shamlessly not revisited his failed critique? Could it be that Diablo 3, a game that had to be apologizied for by the CEO, will appear as even an offchance contender in GOTY discussions?

Funny. It seems like one person succeeded to carefully weigh the merits of a sequel, and another just farted out as many stars as they could because OMG BLIZZRD! OMG STARCRAFT! OMG FRUITDEALER! OMG FIVESTARS! OMG LEAH IS KOOL!

Reading some people's expectations... like, what did you think was gonna happen? Like it looks like they made a cleaner, nicer and a more well thought out Borderlands? Like, I think that speaks on how good that first game was, they got most of those things right and there wasn't much to change gameplay wise.

I am perfectly fine with more Borderlands, as it's not another Battlefield of Call of Duty or MOH.

There goes my life. Good thing I wound up with a light schedule this semester.

Sounds good still.

I really appreciate that this review isn't just a "Fuck yeah, more Borderlands!" type review and it weighs everything out in a fair, yet critical manner. I just wasn't getting this from any other reviews that I looked at. Thanks a lot!

What turned me off on buying this, and waiting for the GOTY edition in a year or so, was the way too early talk of DLC and season passes. Don't tell me all the things you left out of the game before it even releases.

Sad and true, this is what I did and did not regret doing with Borderlands 1 where I barely felt I got my moneys worth.

Of course, I blame all my gamer friends being people too busy with families and jobs for being unable to get co-op going properly..

Great review Jeff! I'm extremely anticipated for this game, and seeing your initial thoughts throughout this review about how the game is more of the first and improved in every aspect of the first has fueled my lust for it even more. Aside from your personal opinion and conclusion in this review, I just can not wait for friday - and see for myself! ( I'm in europe :( )

Good stuff can't wait to get my copy today.

I didn't want a sequel that iterated and improved upon the flaws of the previous game, I wanted an all-new experience that still kept the characters, storyline, and gameplay of the last game, because SO HELP ME GOD if they change this, they are nothing but sell-outs dumbing down their product for the LOWEST COMMON DENOMINATOR!

Sequel is knocked for being a sequel? :/ Otherwise it's pretty much sounding fantastic? Guess you can't help feeling underwhelmed if that's what you felt, just seems like a bit of an odd review.

I've been playing a lot of the first Borderlands to get ready for the sequel (and to knock out the last two DLCs I hadn't finished). It occurred to me watching the trailers that maybe this wasn't a great idea, because it did seem to be "more of the same" - as if someone magically doubled the content of the first game. I'm sure I'll enjoy it regardless, but I can totally see how the number of hours spent in the first game and/or how much time has passed since you played it could affect your response to the sequel.

I also suspect that Jeff is a little bummed that he can't make the same "This is the only class anyone should play" pronouncement as last time.

People said it was a bad idea to buy the first Borderlands and play all of the DLC (not Moxxi) so close to the release of the game and yet I did that and almost have all the achievements. The difference is that I did it mostly solo because I didn't want lv 69 people getting into my game and one shotting everything. However, when I got a full game with people in my level range it was pretty damn fun. I'm really looking forward to playing the game with people.

Also, Jeff is crazy about the soldier class. I played as a Siren and never really felt overwhelmed since my phase ability healed a good chunk of my health every 15 seconds or so and I rarely felt the need to use it so often.

So far I'm getting a much better Borderlands experience. The shooting and running both seem much more fluid, and the graphics are much nicer on PC.

Posted by mracoon

Well Borderlands was a 5 star game for me so if Borderlands 2 is just a refined version of the original then that's all I need.

You have serious Diablo 3 issues, huh?

Anyway good review Jeff! With torchlight 2 coming out this week and Guild Wars 2 still being lots of fun I don't think I need any Borderlands.

Posted by Vinny_Says

I'm glad this game exists, and it's great that they fixed the issues with the first one. But of course, any game you invest 100+ hours into will always be better that its similar sequel, no matter how improved it is.

This review is pretty much on the ball, if not a tad too on the nose. Your reviews are getting a little to formulaic and easy to predict Jeff, maybe it's time someone else gave a big game release the old review treatment, just saying.

Probably just Brad issues. Diablo 3 is... fine. But 5 stars? Come on now.

"Borderlands 2 is a better game in most of the ways that matter, but some of that is brought down by the familiarity of the experience."

Perhaps if you didn't play the same class again Jeff.....

Posted by Winternet

That last line in the review. That was deep, Yosuke Jeff.

Anyway, a bit bummed Borderlands 2 doesn't try to go beyond what Borderlands already did. Fixed issues are nice, but if it feels like it could be something more, it's a shame. That said, I'll definitely play it after I finish the DLC for the 1st one.

Posted by Humanity

I kinda predicted that Jeff would not be as satisfied with BL2 as he was with the first one - honestly it's not too surprising when he put so many hours into the original and without having played it you can tell Borderlands 2 does not really stray from the formula that much.

Posted by BulletproofMonk

I only played through Borderlands once so I'm not too burned out on it. I'm ready to devote a shitload of time to this game.

Why would you prefer an unpredictable review? The whole point behind Jeff's style is that he puts himself out there so you know the kind of stuff he likes and you can better understand (but not necessarily agree with) his reviews. And at the end of the day, he makes an assessment on whether you should buy the game and that's it.

Yeah, this only seems like a positive thing. Reviews are supposed to be more informative and less entertainment, and being able to know Jeff's personality vs mine makes it easy to extrapolate how I'll likely feel about the game.

Posted by NaDannMaGoGo

Man reading through review comments is always the worst.

At this point I kinda feel like Giantbomb shouldn't even do reviews. I mean, their Quicklooks and the Bombcast help to form a much better view anyways and... they crew WILL get shit on for a review no matter what. Of course applying a score to a game is always a pretty shitty step. Because it's not possible to apply a 'right value' to a game, how could anyone possibly be perfectly fine with it?

And then there are so goddamn many people that go ape shit if someone just disagrees with their view slightly - argh just fuck it.

Posted by VeRKK

From the 9 hours I played so far (level 12), I definitely think more borderlands is not enough. Sure, more enemy variety and locals is a big plus, and the new ui is fantastic, but the quest structure is still super linear, and repetitive. Speaking from a guy that finished the first one a month ago, and perhaps that is the case, but mission design is still a big problem.

Posted by OtakuGamer

I'm still going to play it, more Borderlands is fine with me. I didn't expect it to be anything else other than more Borderlands anyway.

Posted by MooseyMcMan

It sounds like they made another great Borderlands game. I look forward to playing it.

Thanks for the review, Jeff. I've been on the fence for a couple of weeks now, and this is the nail in the coffin. I should have loved the first Borderlands, but something about it just didn't sit right with me. Hearing that this is more of the same (more or less) means I shouldn't waste my time or money.

Same here.

Posted by GetEveryone

As someone who has Borderlands, but only played a very small amount despite desperately wanting to play more, I am super excited for this.

The idea that it is "just more Borderlands" doesn't faze me i the slightest.

Posted by johnwaynegacy

I haven't played the first Borderlands, but right now I want to get into this game. Should I play the original one first? Is it more like Mass Effect (obligatory to play the whole trilogy to get the best experience) or more like Elder Scrolls (each game is a different experience with a different story)?

I had the added problem of it ran like hot fucking garbage on my PC (I know it was legendarily unoptimized, but it's still baffling that something like Sleeping Dogs or Deus Ex runs perfectly and looks gorgeous, but I could barely get Borderlands to run at 20fps on medium settings when I tried playing it eight months ago or so), but I mostly feel the same about both games as you guys. I've played a lot of loot-driven multiplayer games solo and managed to have fun with them--I cannot begin to count how many hours I put into Phantasy Star Online over the five years and multiple versions--but something about Borderlands never clicked with me. It was one of those games where I loved everything surrounding it but playing it was just a slog, and the performance issues and terrible netcode shot any chance of me wanting to deal with it.

I was hoping Borderlands 2 would be different but it just sounds like the same game but it won't make my laptop want to die this time. Great to hear it's good for people who like that, but that's not a $60 to me, and especially not with that Season Pass scheme they were running. You have to preorder or pay extra for a fifth character they announced practically a year ago? Look guys I get it, DLC isn't done at the same time as the rest of the game, but if you're going to be announcing and showing off art for your fifth character you intend to hide behind a paywall that early on, why don't you just put it in the fucking game in the first place instead of being so cheap?

Posted by Zereta

Its better than Borderlands?

Sold.

Posted by MideonNViscera

The very first line in the game is "So, you want to hear another story, eh?" and it froze on me after the word "hear".
