4 stars from Jeff? flop of the year

Edited by ChrisTaran

Great review Jeff. Can't wait to play it tonight!

And yet, Diablo 3 somehow got a 5 from giant bomb, and actual points of criticism are made of Borderlands 2.

Fascinating how just More Of The Same only got BL2 four stars. But yet, More Of The Same With Fewer Features & No PVP & A Naked Cashgrab got five stars.

Could it be that Brad failed to properly review Diablo 3 and has shamlessly not revisited his failed critique? Could it be that Diablo 3, a game that had to be apologizied for by the CEO, will appear as even an offchance contender in GOTY discussions?

Funny. It seems like one person succeeded to carefully weigh the merits of a sequel, and another just farted out as many stars as they could because OMG BLIZZRD! OMG STARCRAFT! OMG FRUITDEALER! OMG FIVESTARS! OMG LEAH IS KOOL!

You have serious Diablo 3 issues, huh?

Anyway good review Jeff! With torchlight 2 coming out this week and Guild Wars 2 still being lots of fun I don't think I need any Borderlands.

Diablo 3 has become a pretty contentious game since the community has turned on it, while the press gave it overwhelming praise at launch and hasn't looked back. They argued about it at the PAX reviews panel with, ironically, the press defending their views because it sold well and people put a bunch of hours into it.

@Splodge: If I remember correctly during the PC quick look of the original he said something like "I've played this game through twice on both consoles and still only played the soldier" so there's no guarantee he stuck with another class for a meaningful amount of time with this one.

Posted by beard_of_zeus

The tagline here about it being "more Borderlands" was pretty much the vibe I was getting. After reading the review, sounds like they did improve on some important things, but I personally don't know if that's enough for me. Like Jeff, I played a ton of the original, but...I dunno, this isn't really grabbing me at all. Maybe there will be a GOTY edition down the line, and I'll get that.

I stand corrected.

Maybe he should mix it up a little then, but to each his own.. I guess...

Personally, I like the turret, but I will be going mega damage build, none of this pussy regen hide and seek nonsense.

I only played enough Borderlands to finish the main quest because of the issues Jeff mentioned at the beginning of the review. Seems like all that is fixed so I'm totally down for this game

Does Borderlands 2 PC still have that annoying auto-aim that crept into Borderlands? I often found it hurt my aim because I couldn't account for it much more than it helped in hitting things, and auto aim really has no place in PC anyways. It just feels cheap.

@TudsGamol: Consider the following:

  • Brad and Jeff are 2 different people, with different tastes, and different likes and dislikes of games.
  • Nostalgia is a powerful thing, isn't it? I don't remember Diablo II being as great as you think it is in it's first year either.

Thanks for the review, Jeff. I've been on the fence for a couple of weeks now, and this is the nail in the coffin. I should have loved the first Borderlands, but something about it just didn't sit right with me. Hearing that this is more of the same (more or less) means I shouldn't waste my time or money.

Same here.

Here too.

Nope, you can choose whether to have auto-aim on or completely off (it's off by default when using a mouse).

I was wanting to buy this on PC. I won't be for three reasons.

1. No offline co-op, couch co-op on PC - my rig is an entertainment hub and I have it sitting in my living room. I was really looking forward to playing this with my friend after work most days but now HE would have to buy it as well and play it online. Not the way I want to play Borderlands...at all.

2. Even if I were to give in and play this game online - there's no level balancing system and therefore if I happen to join my mate's game and he's Level 18 and I'm level 8...it'll be dogshit because the enemies will be challenging to the host and impossible for me. So.....no.

3. Russian key's are region locked - boooo - I wanted to buy it for £19.00 and now I can't lol

As for the 360 version...yes a lot more of my friends have a console set up and will be purchasing this...but I Can't stand in-game lag (don't look at that fire) and my subscription to xbox live has ran out...so fuck that.

Sorry 2K.

Wow. I love a game getting a 4-star review, then everybody proclaiming it terrible in the comments. You people lack so much brainpower it's unbelievable.

This review is pretty much on the ball, if not a tad too on the nose. Your reviews are getting a little to formulaic and easy to predict Jeff, maybe it's time someone else gave a big game release the old review treatment, just saying.

Why would you prefer an unpredictable review? The whole point behind Jeff's style is that he puts himself out there so you know the kind of stuff he likes and you can better understand (but not necessarily agree with) his reviews. And at the end of the day, he makes an assessment on whether you should buy the game and that's it.

Yeah, this only seems like a positive thing. Reviews are supposed to be more informative and less entertainment, and being able to know Jeff's personality vs mine makes it easy to extrapolate how I'll likely feel about the game.

Maybe some users on the website don't share Jeff's opinions on games and their tastes are more aligned with say Ryan, or Brad or even Vinny; I don't want some schizo telling me about video games, just a different viewpoint on a big shooter or action game once in a while. Is that too much to ask for? (Give Jeff some time off, especially this time of year when so many games are coming out)

Can wait to play when I get home.

kinda saw this coming, but playing a few minutes of it last night on PC before i konked out and i was definitely feeling it. runs like a fucking dream and the interface is vastly improved. think i could see a much higher level of detail in the assets as well. can't wait to dig into more of it!

edit: four stars is a damn fine score, was just hoping there was enough there to knock it out of the park. i'm still terribly excited for it though. want to play some more before i read what i'm sure is a good review so it won't warp my opinion too much.

I was up for more Borderlands so this is good news.

Thanks jeff for the validation. about how i feel about the game as well. borderlands 2 is so polished and yet it feels like its missing something cant really put my finger on it

Posted by Y2Ken

I'm very glad this game is finally here. For me personally it seems like exactly what I was hoping for - a new story in the Borderlands universe, with almost all the minor niggles from the first game ironed out, and a few pleasant new features to boot.

Posted by haggis

I wasn't expecting a huge change, and it looks like that's about right--so, it's a no-buy for me. But it's still good news for everyone who liked the first game, so I can't say that's a bad thing. I like it when developers bring something new to the table, but it's still good when they manage to deliver a sequel that doesn't fuck everything up.

I feel lucky that I dropped out of the original Borderlands early because my char was so overpowered from side questing that I felt bored kind of waltzing through the game...so I'm not burned out, which is something that sapped a ton of potential fun out of Skyrim for me...

That's why I loved the much-hated leveling system in Oblivion - you had to focus on smart leveling instead of just leveling or the game could get broken difficult. Kept it fresh. Looking forward to this game.

Edited by skelington_

You know what turned me off buying this one? All this talk of season passes, day-one DLC, hyper-expensive add-ons and whatnot before the game had even been released. I immediately said to myself "i'll wait a year or two and get the GOTY Edition, then". After all the hype has died down i'll get a much clearer picture as to good Borderlands 2 actually is, and be able to discern whether it's worth buying or not - in a year or two! When it has all the DLC included and is way cheaper! I love having patience, staggering my purchases and being money-savvy. Seems i'm not the only one.

Well, if you know your tastes aren't aligned with Jeff's, then you know not to take his opinions as yours. Also, if you follow Giant Bomb, you most likely know what Jeff likes and dislikes in games, so you'll be able to use that as a guide when considering his criticisms.

I think Jeff was the right choice to review Borderlands 2, as he's the one with the most knowledge about the first game and it's DLCs of the team. As for different viewpoints, I'm sure the other guys are going to share theirs on the Bombcast sooner or later.

@skelington_: I agree wholeheartedly.

Every time Jeff talks about the soldier being so good in the first game I still laugh at his inexperience with the other classes. He's easily the either the worst or runner-up for the worst class past the first playthrough (which is kindergarten easy if you do the sidequests).

I love ya Jeff but you need to realize that Playthrough 1 balance doesn't mean a thing because of the lack of scaling and ease of overleveling. It's basically easy mode for casual players to finish the game once.

Posted by Bistromath

Sounds like what Jeff needs is a little Torchlight 2.

@skelington_: That's more or less my philosophy with all video games anymore.

Thanks Jeff,

I jumped back into the original Borderlands last week after having spent over 100 hours in it not long after it's release. I quickly jumped back out in order to preserver my craving for Borderlans 2. Jeff has confirmed by best wishes. More and better Borderlands. I have this one preloaded and will jump in tonight after work. Here is to my hopes of having as much fun with 2 as I had with the original. Based on my recent jump back in to the original and after reading Jeff's review I am very excited to fire things up tonight.

Keep up the good work guys. I rely on GBomb opinions since my workplace is not one full of gamers.

@skelington_: I don't know what hype you are talking about. Gameplay videos have been out for a long time, there are enough reviews to see what you are actually getting. There is no talk about Day-1 DLC, because there no such thing. The season pass is just the 4 upcoming DLC for a cheaper price, because you pre-order non-existing content. Otherwise it's the standard amount $10/€10. (It's not "hyper expensive" Skyrim Dawnguard €20, which people happily bought). Obviously the press is going to cover big releases and respectively it will be discussed. It's fine when you don't want to buy something at a certain price point and make up excuses. But don't pin it on theoretical fad that you envision yourself to justify it.

4/5 should be 5/5 for Morderlands doing what it does best. Improving on one of the best games of this gen.

Heh. I picked the soldier in my first playthrough of BL1 when it came out because Jeff talked it up as being the go to class in the game. Maybe I played the soldier the wrong way but it was kind of a crappy combat experience. I felt like a wet noodle, hiding behind rocks, praying for my turret to come back up. As soon as I finished the game the first time, I switched over to the Siren and never looked back. The first playthrough was a big improvement but once I got to playthrough 2 and the talents started to kick in...good lord. The siren became so fucking strong especially if you specced a certain way. I played with a smg of each damage type and I went down the middle tree to get the phoenix talent. I was a damage over time machine and I was practically immortal with the phasewalk healing talent. It got to a point where I could fire one shot into an enemy and watch him burn/corrode to death while he screamed like a little girl. It was so satisfying. After that, every time Jeff talked about how good the soldier was I sort of just laughed it off. To each his own, I suppose.

Jeff's review seems unfinished, but he makes a point: it's probably just him that feels there's something missing.

This sequel is in almost every way a direct improvement over the original (only the interface is both better and worse). If only more sequels did this. Take everything you and the majority of players felt was wrong about the first game and try to improve it. Gearbox did that. They also added a lot of stuff.

Anyone calling Borderlands 1 a grind has no idea what that word means. If you took out the idea of leveling in Borderlands, it was still a story-based shooter with a sense of narrative progression. Borderlands 2 kicks that up much stronger, with more lively characters, more voices as you play (as they did with the superb Knoxx DLC), and a better difficulty curve that doesn't turn every weapon you see for the next 20 levels into trash.

If you absolutely hated the first game, this game isn't for you. If you loved it, this is better. If you sort of liked it, or you didn't even play it but read about it and made up your mind anyway, you should give the sequel a try. It's just better in so many ways, and incredibly fun, solo or co-op (but skills are built to synergize and work better co-op). And also, it's worthy pc now. Not a sloppy port like the first game. If you have a good rig (and nvidia video card for the PhysX stuff) the best version is on pc, whether you use gamepad or kb/mouse.

I'm a few hours in. Only thing missing for me is re-remembering how to play.ie sell stuff and apparently they improved that that. But it is that very experience where something is at least soft. But then, this is BORDERLANDS 2 and they mean it. Thank gawd they don't turn one out every year. In other words...you know what that would be compared to! Call of Borderlands....

Whats missing is the second floor...the ceiling has been hit. maybe a different planet..but idk Pandora was where it's based. What else to tie the story line to. And really that just changes one thing, though change of scenery isn't always trivial as a real change. And you know Pandora...desolate and barren,. In that one joke description maybe near the bottom of undesirable places to live , but not as bad as that some 'other' planet har har har.

I'm enjoying it, starting to feel the groove and instincts come back.

Posted by EarlessShrimp

Having played a fair amount of the first one, I'm still playing this one just the same as a first: in a horrible nearly non-stop binge. I think the key was not playing BL1 for many months and simply hankering some BL before loading this one up.

Posted by cthomer5000

I totally ODed on Fallout 3 and didn't really love New Vegas because of it. I mean, we're talking 200+ hours of Fallout 3 with 3 complete playthroughs and all the DLC.

It is shame that loving one game to death can impact your enjoyment of a sequel, but it totally happens.

Edited by skelington_

@Suits: It's simple economics. The Season Pass in the UK costs £20 - at RRP that is 50% of the game's base value. In a year's time (or perhaps two), i could purchase a GOTY Edition (if one exists) for approximately £20, or the vanilla game for closer to £10-15. This PP is largely dependent on how the game holds its value (Borderlands 1 did not). If i purchase on launch i would be paying full-price (est. £37-38 in the UK), plus a £20 Season Pass. I could never justify spending close to £60 for a supposed 'whole' experience. If i play to the pattern of the market, and have patience, i will save myself around £40. If you think that there isn't 'hype' around major Q3 releases around launch, then that's your perspective, but i prefer to let the dust settle and see what opinions are in a few months time once everybody has fully digested the experience. I take reviews with a pinch of salt - it's the opinions of the game-playing public that i'm interested in. Game design has stagnated, graphics aren't getting any better, and there are no major revolutions left to be had in the current generation - waiting a year or so to pay less has no disadvantages in an era such as this.

AUGH make sure you are logged in to Xbox Live and that you get to a save point BEFORE you try network play!!

I just lost my first character and 90 minutes of play because when I pressed start to go online, it booted me out to the intro screen WITH NO WARNING at either the xbox live login point nor the online play point. Let me repeat that. No warning. Not cool, Gearbox. Also, some of the early enemies are getting stuck in the ice, but that's what we get for launch day play, I guess.

After playing this for about four hours, I think you were actually too kind.

The humor and writing are really irritating. I am not sure since the guy who did the writing does those really unfunny Ash Why You Ugly? videos or maybe the guy just has too many ties to sites like Desctructoid and Gametrailers, but the other reviews all hammered home how funny and great the story was. Not sure what they are playing, I am being force fed stale jokes that tell themselves before they are even said. If I am able to not even pay attention to them then I find them more enjoyable.

Can't wait for the texture pack disc to come out. Really stale objects all over, at times I am hoping for pop in. I noticed this in the review vids in HD for some sites, too. I was wondering if the gameplay shown was a cam, or what the hell I was seeing. It is just the game, apparently.

Well, it is more Borderlands. I just can't see how this took three years to make. Extreme lack of polish for a game that wanted to be that next huge AAA franchise. I actually think the first game played better.

Posted by vaportra1l

I played a shitton of Borderlands 1 and I am loving the fuck out of this game at about 6 or 7 hrs in on 2 characters. However, I will say the game looks pretty meh on the consoles, on my pc at 2560x1440 with everything turned to max it looks much better than the first game (which I just played through again and thought looked pretty good).

Posted by OneManX

Once I got my hands on a decent weapon... and I had to make tough choices over what guns I kept or sold, I think Borderlands 2 is getting its hooks back into me... and I love it for it.

I understand people wanting to wait for the GotY edition, but unless you got a friend doing the same or willing to do a 3rd of 4th playthrough almost everyone you find at the point is gonna be over leveled or played it so much they will just blow through all the content (which happened to me with BL1)

@honkyjesus: strange, i personally think they refined and polished the formula like fuck. yeah they didn't step out of the bounds of the formula much but it's slick now to an amazing degree. i also like how the game didn't wait to throw a bunch of action your way.humor's a little cringeworthy at times but no more than blands 1. laughed out loud quite a few times at claptrap and ***********SPOILER CAUSE I'M AN IDIOT AND DON'T KNOW HOW TO USE SPOILER TAGS********** Scooter **********SPOILER********* had quite a hilarious introduction.

Go straight to this. There isn't any important story bits you'll miss out on and this is such an improved game that it isn't worth starting with the first.
