aw shugs, i thought this game would get a much better review, other than Just OK....

Posted by Marz

Sounds dissapointing.  Are they still doing the TV show?

Posted by wickedsc3

hmmm..... I might have to pick this up.

Posted by Winsord

A bit of a shame, but the moment I heard they were making Red Faction into a linear shooter, I had a bad feeling.

Posted by jkuc316

I guess I'll skip buying this.

Posted by Commisar123

Seems really wierd for them to go in this direction after the Guerilla was so well recieved

Posted by EuanDewar

Yeah this seemed like kind of a bad idea from the start. Ah well, at least they seem to be going in the right direction with Saints Row 3.

I really like the games box art.

Well, looks like the money is going to inFamous 2 next week.

Sounds average..

Posted by Mr_Spinnington

i eagerly await the 5-star inFamous 2 review

nice review!

That sucks, I want to know why Volition decided to pull back a lot on the scope of Red Faction after Guerilla. That game is pretty solid.

Posted by FreakAche

Well that's surprising.

Posted by Delta_Ass

That's a shame. Maybe this'll serve to encourage Volition to go and make FreeSpace 3.

Posted by natetodamax

This seems like a big step back from Guerilla. I can't figure out why they took this route.

Posted by Cyrisaurus

On June 7th... when Red Faction: Armageddon is released... Buy inFamous 2 instead....

I worked on this for 2 years and I'm still trying to figure out why we went from open world to a linear game. I think it was a knee jerk reaction to the story complaints that were leveled against RFG.
Edited by Deathpooky

Pretty much what I predicted from the initial QLEX and description of the single player.  No idea why they decided to do this with one of the best open world sandbox games of the last few years and one of the most fun game mechanics accompanying it.

Did they really sit down and go "screw this open world destruction stuff, people want a third person game where they walk in a straight line and shoot space bugs"?  Just boggles my mind.

Next you'll tell me Just Cause 3 is going to be a third person modern military shooter with some mild grappling hook action.

SAD FACE

In movie terms, sounds like a sequel to a Cult B grade hit.

Posted by niamahai

i think we've reached the point this gen where every game seems so... generic.

i think they needed next-gen tech to improve the open-worldness (bigger environment/building/explosion)

but they did improve the shootin! that's kinda good right?

Posted by zombie2011

The quicklook looked boring as hell.

Never before has a Rocket Launcher borne the title 'mundane.'

Posted by M_33

Well this certainly hurt the chances of me buying this... I'll just stick with Guerrilla.

There's nothing wrong with a good linear third-person shooter, but Red Faction: Armageddon is merely a passable one. Its mechanics are sound but its design uninspired, failing to do any one thing better than the standout entries in the genre. And the few unique tricks it does have, its predecessor did better. After Guerrilla made such a resounding impact, it's a shame that the best you can say about this latest Red Faction is that it's just OK.
I feel like this is one of the best written paragraphs I've seen on GB about a game's quality in a long time.  Thank you sir for answering what I thought would be a burning question (as is often the case with mixed review type games).  What I like most is that it accurately sums up what I would think about this game intelligently informing my purchasing decision.  Thanks Brad!  (Swung and missed with Mafia II's 3-star review but I think you nailed this one for me).

Why? That is the question I continually ask about every decision Volition made in the design of this game.  I am renting it and will probably finish it because I kinda just have to play everything Red Faction, but I am not happy about it.

@Mr_Spinnington: If it's Brad yeah.

Yup, you could tell.  The Guerrilla demo got me hooked.  You could bring down whole buildings.  Here, the demo has you fight space bugs.  I trudged along thinking I would get outside to blow up entire cities, nope.

Posted by bwooduhs

I think its pretty telling that even though i loved Guerilla i couldn't care less about this game.

Holy crap, i was about to say the same thing! Don't see many box arts with those colors.

I kind of wish they expanded on the little side missions you had to do in Guerrilla. My favorite parts were the ones that involved almost puzzle-like ways of taking down buildings using specified weapons or objects.

This shows a lack of understanding on the developer's part. You need to think "What makes this previous game fun?" and then iterate on that.

Posted by MEATBALL

Being just okay isn't so bad, but then the general feeling is that it isn't as good as its predecessor and I felt that was merely okay (if that) so it's looking like a pass. I might pick it up when it goes super cheap at some point. The review was a good read, as always.

I wonder if they honestly thought that making this a linear shooter was the right thing to do.

Oh god, if they get rid of the crazy sandbox world of Just Cause 2... I'll be pissed.

This year has been mind-boggling to me. Games I expected to be amazing (like this one and Brink) have wound up mediocre and games I knew nothing about (L.A. Noire and Bulletstorm) have turned out amazing. Hopefully inFamous 2 doesn't fall into the first category.

But that's what the first 2 were. Guerilla is the outlier in the series.

Volition's strength really seems to be in making open worlds with lots of fun/stupid shit to do. There is nothing remarkable about their campaigns (although SR2 did have some surprisingly brutal moments in it's story missions). I wonder why they decided to reign it in for this game
Posted by Fragonard

Oh good, I'm glad I don't have to care about this game.

Posted by CornBREDX

Mediocre Red Faction game. Shocking.

I think I'll pass. I prefer to remember Red Faction for how much I liked the first one (which I still play to this day on occasion).

I will admit, though, I still feel burned by the non working waste of money steam version of Guerilla THAT WILL NEVER BE FIXED AND IS STILL A BUYABLE PRODUCT EVEN THOUGH THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE CANT GET IT TO WORK BECAUSE IT FREEZES YOUR CHARACTER IN PLACE AT THE BEGINNING OF THE GAME AND THERE IS NO WAY AROUND THIS.

sorry, got a bit whiney there. Just had to get that off my chest.
Red Faction had so much potential and each new itteration is always full of possibilities but lacking in substance. Real shame.

This makes me sad.  I picked up Guerrilla on a Steam sale a few years ago and had so much fun with it I was ready to pay full price for this one.  Now I'm not even sure I'll pick it up on sale.

Guess I'll just load up Guerrilla again and unleash some destructive mayhem.

Posted by Genjai

This is so disappointing! I loved the demo and thought about buying it, but this... this changes things.

Edited by Binaryfart

Bugger. Guerilla was one of my all time favs, so I was really looking forward to more of the same.... :(

To be fair I guess, Guerilla was really the departure from the series - Armageddon seems to be more inline with the earlier Red Faction games (mostly underground, fighting in caves, etc), so I guess you could say that Armageddon is simply returning to the Red Faction formula!
Posted by Seedofpower

I hope they make back their money on this one.

Posted by DG991

Same could be said about guerrilla..... like everything in this review.

Posted by Th3_James

I bought this months ago, and even though guerilla was quite bleh in the single player department, I played the shit out of it and loved every minute of destruction.

Edited by TadThuggish

I get the impression that Giant Bomb, including Whiskey in general, loves to write honest, passionate reviews for products...and then give them one more star than the words intended.  (See: Kinect Sports, Motorstorm Apocalypse, Homefront, etc.)

That doesn't mean I don't love this site or its personalities but that seems like an odd problem to have.  3/5 is still in the middle: still good, still fine, still acceptable.  How do you justify a "good" score if the last paragraph is all about shitting over a game?  I don't care if the mechanics work to their intended functions.  I'm reading this because I want to know if Brad Shoemaker liked it.

But he directly contrasted them, and explained why Guerrilla was better
Posted by abara

This is about what I expected after playing the demo. I loved Guerrilla, warts and all, and while it did get tedious after a while, the formula worked and the promise of such large-scale destruction made it addictive. After seeing Armageddon in action, I felt like the magnet gun was a cool idea, but otherwise it was just funneling the freedom and scale of Guerrilla into a place where its strengths were minimized and whatever they added wasn't very remarkable. It's a shame. It'll probably go in my "buy used in 18 months when its $20" category.

Posted by AndrewB

At least they realized that they couldn't just put out another open world version of Red Faction... because with no diversity in environments, it's kinda hard to imagine it could be different enough from the one they already made to warrant the development.

Posted by Gish

A bit of a disappointment.  I was pretty pumped for this game after beating Guerilla and Red Faction 1 last fall.  I even had Armageddon pre-ordered but after the so-so reviews and the barrage of other games coming out I will wait for a Steam or Amazon sale.

I'm still glad they're keeping the series alive though.  Hopefully, in the next game they can add in more diversity and openness.
