@Alexandruxx: Can you point out where Jeff was unfair to this game? Did he give it a fair review or not?

Posted by blacklab

In other news, Sony Bend is still terrible.

Posted by MachoFantastico

Can't say I'm shocked! Something about this as never looked solid, Uncharted is a wonderful franchise that deserves better. Poor Sony, poor indeed.

Posted by ultimatepunchrod

Honestly, this is good enough for me. I want a comparable experience to the first Uncharted, and that's what it seems is being delivered here. I didn't need it to outshine 3 and I knew it wouldn't be as good as 2. I still can't wait for this.

Posted by devilgunman

Nothing surprising here. I still remember listening to Giantbonb podcast after E3 and realize how much Giantbomb crews hate console experience on the handheld. I remembered when Jeff said he doesn't want to watch cinematic cutscenes on 5 inches screen when he has 3DTV with home theater system sit in front of him. Well, it's his opinion. I will enjoy this game much more than he did.

Posted by bhhawks78

Would rather have on board storage than useless/distracting dual touch surfaces and shitty tilt. If I want to play a game with gimmicky controls I'd use my iphone and pay a dollar.

Posted by Cybexx

This is about what I expected, I played the demo of this last week and it seemed solid but not exactly inspired.

I think Jeff's linger question about the Vita's graphical horsepower is a bit silly as with any launch title for any system ever as a developer your just barely trying to get the thing running and the amount of time you have to optimize is severely limited since the hardware gets locked down so late in development. Not to say that is an entirely fair excuse to level at the customer but if if the Vita manages to hang in there for awhile I think we are going to start seeing some pretty impressive stuff near the end of next year, maybe even the end of this year. Though I don't know if it will ever get to the point where a new Uncharted Vita is indistinguishable from Uncharted 3. The hardware architecture of the Vita is pretty different from PS3 and you have to make trade-offs for battery consumption, we will see, but at the very least we are going to see games that look better and run smoother than this one.

I think I'll still grab this since there are not a whole lot of story-driven games at the launch of Vita and they are my bread and butter, but it is too bad that Sony Bend didn't manage to pull off a Launch Day miracle.

Posted by JoeyRavn

Four pages in and we are still debating who reviewed this or what secret agenda he had? Grow the fuck up. You don't like a score, deal with it. There's nothing in this review that makes it different from any other in the site.

That said, touch controls are not very appealing for this style of game, if you ask me. I love my DSi, but I admit that touch controls can be very harmful to the experience if they're tackled in just for the sake of it. For tilt controls it's even worse...

Posted by JonnyBlunts

Jeff made plenty of valid points, and from what I've seen from this game the 3 point score seems totally justified. Touch based mini games, and tilt controls to balance on a log? The DS launch and PS3 launch called, they want their bad ideas back.

Posted by Wiseblood

Wow, they make you do the tilt thing to balance on things?  Even Naughty Dog realized how stupid that was in the first game and left it out of the other games.

Posted by rachelepithet

Sounds like the MGS VR Missions of the Uncharted world. The gameplays there, but without "the show."

Posted by WilltheMagicAsian

@JonnyBlunts: I feel like Sony made it mandatory to include most if not all of the Vita's excessive features for the launch titles. Kind of like how six-axis was shoehorned in on the PS3.

Posted by iAmJohn

Sounds a lot like the first Uncharted - a whole lot of promise buried under half-good ideas and stupid, gimmicky motion control bullshit.

Posted by Etnos

Im enjoying it, but then I like mobile gaming a lot as a whole. My only complain is $50... this games need to come out on $30 at much.

NEVER PLAY IT!!!!!!!!

People were actually expecting this to be good? Ha, it's the PSP all over again. Trying to shove a console experience into a handheld will never be interesting.

I think the Vita is perfectly capable of creating that sort of experience, but I'm not certain whether Sony Bend are the right fit for such a game. Also, I very much doubt this project had anywhere close to the average budget of a PS3 Uncharted title, which obviously stifles any such aspirations. That and the pressure of being a launch title instead of having an extra year from launch like the first Uncharted.

Posted by JohnB

Motion control and screen touching aside, if it's like the first Uncharted I'm pretty sure I'll enjoy it a lot. And since I'm not going to get a Vita until Persona 4 arrives on it, it may be cheaper then.

Posted by Krakn3Dfx

Still want to play it at some point, but going to wait for a Vita price drop, and by then this should be a lot cheaper.

Posted by ZRLeigh

Looking at some people's comments on here it's like Jeff gave the game 1 star. 3 stars is ok, but not fantastic. I look forward to playing it next week anyway.

Edited by Artso

I didn't like Uncharted 3 that much (bad story, bad characters) and this wasen't even made by Naughty Dog. I agree with Jeff, I don't want console type games on handhelds. Give me something unique that I can't get on consoles and I might be interested. This seems like a quick cash-in for Sony.

Edited by foxhound421

Having not played the game myself, I can't speak for the game's quality. Jeff may be totally spot-on with this review. That said, it seems to be doing this game a disservice to give the person on the Giant Bomb staff with the most consistent and outspoken disdan for the Vita as a product the opportunity to review the platform's most prominent launch title.

Just having listened to his thoughts about the Vita on the podcast, I feel like Jeff's opinion of the platform's validity is colored by the fact that his job allows him access to games in their optimal environments all the time. Unfortunately, I can't play Uncharted 3 on my PS3 in my living room while my wife is watching the CW teen-soap du jour, or while I'm on my lunch break 35-miles away from my console. For me, the Vita sounds like the best way to have a console-like experience when a proper console isn't available to me. As he has said, Jeff may not want to play these types on games on a portable device, whereas for me, many times a portable device is the only way I can play a game like this.

Anyway, from what I played of the Golden Abyss demo at the local Gamestop, I can't wait to get my hands on it next week.

I am surprised that Brad didn't review this game since he is basically "Uncharted guy".

Posted by Evan_Buchholz

Review's good pretty much what I expected.... I feel like this game is pretty similar to how Resident Evil Revelations is presented.

Also it's so god damn annoying to see how this is like Uncharted 3 all over again review wise. TONS of people calling out Joystiq and IGN for not giving it a 9 or that the graphics are so good that they're practically blinded by PS Vita hate that they just wanted to give it a less than perfect score.

While almost none of these people have played it either....

Posted by UltorOscariot

Kind of a shame considering the IP's pedigree, but not to be unexpected when consider that this is the first Uncharted game made by someone other than Naughty Dog and it's in the first wave of software on new hardware. Hopefully they will be past using Vita feature inspired gimmicks and have worked out some of the hardware kinks in time for the inevitable next Uncharted Vita title.

Posted by KoolAid

This reminds me of the first uncharted. The PS3 just came out and they made a game where you could use the amazing playstation sixaxis to throw grenades. I got the feeling Sony wanted that in to show off the tech. But they wisely removed it for two and it was a much better game (obviously not the only reason, but still.) By this logic, the next uncharted vita game will be amazing!

Posted by ReyGitano

Glad it sounds like I'm not missing out on much by not getting a Vita at launch then.

You can deduct that from one review?

Posted by TooWalrus

While I'm curious why they didn't have Brad review this (because he finished and reviewed the last few Uncharted games), I don't really care. I'll play this when I eventually get a Vita... which is probably going to be around the time Persona 4: The Golden comes out.

I knew the game was going to be Uncharted lite with a few gimmicks. I'll pick it up later but not at $50. So far I'm happy with my launch game decisions of UMvC3, Touch My Katamari, Wipeout and Stardust Delta.

Posted by TheHBK

I think we are gonna see what Jeff said as a theme for Vita games for years to come

"This ain't no PS3 game."

I played this as as soon as the touch minigames started, I was instantly turned off the vita.

Posted by JimmyPancakes

Thanks for the review, this definitely is the final nail in the coffin on my pre-order. The other big nail was the price of the memory card. It's going to be a little rough knowing theres a new portable Lumines out there that's not in my hands. But I will comfort myself knowing I can put Lumines in my PSP and have a very similar experience while I wait for the inevitable price drop of the system.

Posted by Nakiro

It seems GiantBomb is holding the lowest score on Metacritic for this game at the moment.

Posted by thornie_delete

Hey let's get a guy who doesn't like the Uncharted series or Sony handhelds to review a Sony handheld Uncharted game! Not saying the game isn't a 3 out of 5, just a bit confused as to why Jeff reviewed this game.

Posted by Rhaknar

pretty much in sync with most if not all other reviewers that are giving it around 7s. Seems its good, but not great.

On a unrelated note, people saying that they are waiting on GBs opinions to buy a Vita when they have been shitting on it for months (and on handhelds in general) is hilarious

Posted by MonkeyKing1969

I think I would have to agree the lack of a "show piece" event or events would be a letdown. Also, I would assume that without Naughty Dog or (the team) things like inane dialogue repetitive would not get cleaned up or re-thought. I think the comparison between UC 3 and UC Golden Abyss mostly highlight how good Naughty Dog is at crafting and polishing their games, not to say Bend Game Studio is bad...but they need some time & seasoning.

Posted by Kerned

I'm surprised that anyone is surprised that the Vita's controls seem gimmicky when shoehorned into an Uncharted game. What a shocker.

Posted by Luchalma

I'm not saying this review is wrong, but I think I'll go somewhere else when looking for helpful Vita reviews. Giantbomb has shown me they aren't really giving this thing a chance.

When has Jeff ever said he doesn't like Uncharted as a series, or the Sony handhelds? They've had long conversations about whether game-specific handhelds can still survive as a market, but I've never heard Jeff shit on the Vita as a thing - just whether or not it can succeed in today's marketplace filled with iPhones and iPads, and a 3DS that has already been out for a year.

Posted by TheMasterDS

I can't believe people are accusing Jeff of being biased. From the sounds of it that game deserves a 3/5 because it lacks a lot of the things that make the Uncharted series worth playing like the wit, the charm and the set pieces. It tries to fill that gap with mediocre touch screen gimmicks. Naturally it is a 3/5. In fact 3/5 sounds really charitable to me.

@thornie: You really are stupid. Just leave this website.

It's not the same for everyone but Jeff is a pretty good measure for myself when it comes to video games, and even after reading other reviews, nothing is spelled out as a must need play for me. Also I am talking about getting a Vita at launch, and with my budget a console launch has to have something I really want if i'm going to shell out premium money. Doesn't mean I'm never going to get a Vita, or even that I'm not going to get one by the end of the year; it just means that I'm glad I'm not killing myself for paying $350+ to experience something right away.

@Alexandruxx: So if you know Brad would love this game then just imagine he wrote it and had a great time and now you can justify your purchase.

Posted by AlphaJarmel

II'm surprised the reviewer didn't mention the loose controls as that is a SERIOUS fault on the higher difficulties. I agree on the rest of the review though.

Fair enough.
I actually think Gravity Rush will be a bigger system seller than Uncharted.
Uncharted sure has the name going for it, and who knows how the game would have done if it didn't have those expectations tied to it.
Gravity Rush looks really solid though and reviews seem to reflect that as well.

Somehow, I imagine Jeff would rate life a 3/5.

I'll never get Giant Bomb's hate for handhelds. I don't want to seem like a raging fanboy, but Jeff was always against this Uncharted product, and considering how he never said ANYTHING about Uncharted 3, I believe he didn't like that one either.

So why in God's name do you make Jeff review this game when you know how he feels about the Uncharted series as a whole (even tho he liked 2) ?

Jeff made Jeff review this game. Don't get your panties in a bunch, he gave it a fair shot like he does with any game he reviews. I'd prefer that than someone coming at the game from a fanboy mindset.

And I'd prefer them to stick to their fucking rules. They always have games reviewed by the ones that are the most interested in them.

Arkham City got a 5 because Jeff reviewed it. Uncharted 3 got a 5 because Brad reviewed it. Replace the reviewers and both those games would have gotten 4s.

I am not pissed about the score. I don't even plan on buying the Vita anytime soon. It's just that whenever a big console release comes along, they send the fanboys to review them, but when this comes along they send a non-fanboy. Which is good I guess, but why the fuck don't they do that at all times then?

Hey, maybe you missed it or weren't paying attention to the bombcast or something, but Brad was originally supposed to review Arkham, but he passed it off to Jeff because he wanted to enjoy it on his own time. And on your other post about Revelations, there was a time when brad was real warm on it and he was singing praises for it, but eventually grew cold on it.

Did you even read this review? He points out a multitude of reasons as to why Golden Abyss got the score it did, and one of the big ones is that Uncharted 3 (or Uncharted 2, even) could be found for the same price. So what do you want for $50: a shoddy handheld Uncharted with no big setpieces and shitty touch controls, or a full-fledged and beautiful console version?

His point is that it's a series known for beauty, technical prowess and eye-popping action sequences being shrunk onto a system that can't handle it, and then being used as a showpiece for technology which has no place in the game. His review is fair, his points are sound, and also fuck off.

There are so many holes in this splurge of text that I'm not even going to bother to make an argument.

Silly people getting mad at magical internet points.

I would propose a new feature for the comments section. Before being able to comment on a review you have to answer a series of 5 questions that would be impossible to answer without having read the review first. The questions would emphasize the most important points of the review, ensuring that you not only read it before posting but understood it, or at least made a minimum amount of effort in that direction.
