It... Baffles me, utterly baffles me, that gearbox can make great games like borderlands, then turn around and make games like Duke Nukem or Aliens.

That said, I was sorta hoping this game would be like Dead Space (one or two, mind you) but with Aliens. Truly a disappointment, especially considering how effective the motion tracker gimmick actually was in ZombiU.

Man.. :(

Looks like this is Duke Nukem Forever, am I right?!

More like FAILiens. Right folks??

No. And you should be extremely ashamed of yourself.

WOohoo! Alright new site launch! first review since site launch all right! happy thoughts guys!

Posted by daedelus

From the quick look, I think that the environments were appropriately dark. I don't think they were trying to hide "years-old looking environmental textures." Some of the environments actually looked cool and straight out of the movies. And the scripted character animations looked ok to me.

The main problem is there is a huge lack of substantial content for $50-60.

I believe this review. Every fu**ing time they release a game related to 'Alien' world they ruin it. For everyone who loves the movies, stick with them, the older ones. All companies using 'Alien' either for movies or games only want one thing from consumers: money. To them, 'FU** YOU for continuing ruining 'Alien''

Posted by Nicked

I don't think there's a way to make a modern FPS that's also a great Aliens game. I bet developers like the Amnesia guys would be able to do something really interesting with the franchise.

Here's some interesting parts from the reddit thread. I have no idea if it's accurate but it seems believable. Link in the credit for the quote.

...

Somehow the schedules for Pecan and Borderlands 2 managed to line up and GBX realized that there was no fucking way they could cert and ship two titles at the same time. Additionally, campaign (which was being developed by TimeGate) was extremely far behind, even as Pecan's Beta deadline got closer and closer. In April or May (can't remember which), Pecan was supposed to hit beta, but GBX instead came to an agreement with SEGA that they would push the release date back one more time, buying GBX around 9 mos extension.

About 5 of those 9 months went to shipping BL2. In that time, TimeGate managed to scrap together 85% of the campaign, but once Borderlands 2 shipped and GBX turned its attention to Pecan, it became pretty apparent that what had been made was in a pretty horrid state. Campaign didn't make much sense, the boss fights weren't implemented, PS3 was way over memory, etcetcetc. GBX was pretty unhappy with TG's work, and some of Campaign maps were just completely redesigned from scratch. There were some last minute feature requests, most notably female marines, and the general consensus among GBX devs was that there was no way this game was going to be good by ship. There just wasn't enough time.

Considering that SEGA was pretty close to taking legal action against GBX, asking for an extension wasn't an option, and so Pecan crash-landed through certification and shipping. Features that were planned were oversimplified, or shoved in (a good example of this are challenges, which are in an incredibly illogical order). Issues that didn't cause 100% blockers were generally ignored, with the exception of absolutely horrible problems. This isn't because GBX didn't care, mind you. At a certain point, they couldn't risk changing ANYTHING that might cause them to fail certification or break some other system. And so, the product you see is what you get.

bummer. first DNF, now this. Gearbox seems to be in a habit of overhyping and underdelivering games in extended development.

I've read some stuff on the development troubles with the game. That doesn't make me a business expert but maybe it would probably be a good idea if they focus on one game at a time? It just seems like common sense...

I'm really hoping that Brothers in Arms won't be a major flop. When Gearbox get's it right, they really hit it right out of the park.

Man too bad this is a game hundreds of people worked on for years of their lives... this review and the following comments are super funny.

I thought Prometheus was alright.

That's because it is alright. Not earth-shatteringly amazing, but certainly not that terrible.

Colonial Marines is a piece of hot garbage however.

Posted by MurderSlingshot

I would've appreciated if they gave a reason for the Aliens ai being garbage. Something like, "These aliens have severe brain damage from the explosion at Hadley's Hope. That's why they are a bunch of fucking idiots."

Posted by Mumrik

This has looked like shit every time they've shown anything from it and it also turned out to be shit. I wonder how it is that a game like that doesn't get canceled. I can understand how some games show a lot of promise, but have too many issues and never really come together in time, but why does a publisher keep funding something that never really shows any potential?

Posted by Meltbrain

Oh, man. What a disappointment. Good thing I didn't throw down some money down for it before release. I'm totally going to play the newer Aliens VS Predator and enjoy the fact that game isn't such hot garbage.

Posted by Little_Socrates

No bullshit, this game looks worse than Duke Nukem Forever to me. At least Duke was technically functional. This seems six times more broken and just as unpleasant.

It also means I'm probably going to rent it from the Redbox given the opportunity.

Posted by MisterCrow

Man, I'm so bummed that this game is garbage. So bummed!

I couldn't say this any better myself. Goddamn did I want a good Aliens game.

Edited by Sooty

I think Randy Pitchford says this to himself every time he starts promoting another terrible game.

Posted by IceColdGamer

Totally bummed about this one. :(

Posted by evanbower

So, which is more broken - Aliens: Colonial Marines or the new website?

Ha cha cha, cha cha!

Posted by Soap

Calling it right now, the next Alien game is going to rock.

Posted by Slither_Maggot

Damn this a huge bummer. Had some high hopes for this title.

Posted by Efesell

Looks like this is Duke Nukem Forever, am I right?!

I think I'd rather play Duke..

That game is kinda boring, and exceedingly tasteless.. but it seemed like a finished game.

Posted by Spitznock

You mean this long-in-development first person shooter released over a half-decade after its announcement under the helm of Gearbox isn't of the utmost quality?
Weird. Never would've seen that happening.

It really helps to read this review in Alex's voice. Gives it all a bit more venom.

Posted by CharAznable

Excellent review, Alex!

Posted by TMBaker

...steam sale it is!

Posted by myketuna

I was mildly interested in this game.

I am not interested anymore.

Posted by Ghostiet

You know what? I hope this makes Randy Pitchford think twice before he opens his mouth again.

Me too. Characters are constructs needed to behave idiotically so the plot can move forward, but I really liked the movie overall.

Posted by Pixeldemon

@Alex dusted off and nuked this one from orbit.

Posted by Teizen

Not surprised this blundered big time.

Edited by Wampa1

@sooty: So these reviews are a bite to the leg and the low average is much like being wheelchair bound till his best mate shoots him?

Posted by VonHobbittzu

That's unfortunate that this game's not up to par, but at least they got Lance Henriksen to voice Bishop. So that's a positive thing I can say? Also, who all misses the little character portraits of our heroic reviewers next to said review score?

Posted by Video_Game_King

But I just saw some of the Quick Look, and it didn't look terrible.

Posted by Lord_Punch

I cannot explain much beyond that without outright spoiling the game, but let's just say that a late-game cameo (that the game telegraphs in its opening credits) is one of the dumbest, most hamfisted twists in anything of Alien's canon.

is it hudson i bet it is

Does anyone know for sure who it is? I don't feel like the playing the game or watching a Let's Play to find out.

Edited by CakeBomb

This is at least 2 stars, 1 star should be broken, completely unplayable crap like Big Rigs. This is a mediocre by-the-numbers FPS with a great mythology behind it (even if it's mishandled). But oh well, hate train speaks louder I guess.

They should have gone off-canon and played out the unused Alien 3 script where Hicks is the main character, start off already without Ripley and go from there. Michael Biehn gets a job, he's happy to voice the character and just assume it's not canon from the beginning to avoid angry fans.

Still going to play this anyway.

Posted by Vigil80

What makes this worse is that I know there's an executive somewhere that will look at this situation and say, "Looks like the market doesn't want Aliens games."

Posted by HerbieBug

Excellent review of a truly awful game, Alex. And man, you are due for a quality game to review one of these days. :D

Posted by ThePurpleWall

Why, Gearbox? WHY?!

Posted by Wampa1

@cakebomb: He didn't even sound happy in this, just half asleep and totally disinterested.

Posted by FoxMulder

There won't be any "reviewer" avatar in the new site? =(

Nope, Jeff has been very vocal for a while about getting rid of them.

Posted by umdesch4

Oh man, I want to see those debug messages...anybody got that captured in a youtube video or something?

Posted by SpiderJerusalem

Man, this wouldn't be so painful if I didn't love Aliens so goddamn much.

Posted by ObsideonDarman

Great review, Alex. Easily the best I've read of this game since it launched.

The guys have talked before about how reviewing isn't an exact science. In this case, the game is technically playable, but there are very good reasons not to take the time. Taken all together, I can see where the 1-star comes from.
