Man... they flew in a bunch of journalists to see a press event that contained a some loosely defined ideas of things that may or may not be in the game and some concept art? This is press release stuff, Bungie. You make a website for this sort of thing. You don't need to pull out all the razzamatazz until you've got something for realsies to show, yeah? No?

But will anybody still be playing this in 10 years? on a 360/PS3 no less

Looks promising tho

With the pictures of their huge, beautiful office and the sheer ambition of this game, along with getting Paul McCartney (a FORMER FUCKING BEATLE, THE BIGGEST BAND OF ALL TIME) to help with the soundtrack, I can't help but feel Bungie might have developed a pretty significant hubris at this point. Getting kind of an Ion Storm vibe from these guys. Hopefully they don't end-up going down the same path Ion Storm did.

The Paul McCartney thing is actually kind of a bummer to me. Video game music is a different sort of thing than standalone songs. There are people out there who are really really good at making music specifically for video games. I would rather they have someone like that doing the OST instead of Paul.

The guy who's won an awards for his soundtrack and electronica work? Yeah, why would he make a good video game soundtrack? Heh.

I do like that even though it class based, we can create our own custom characters. That's good for a shooter. I'd love to be able to do that in a future Battlefield game for example.

It does sound very ambitious indeed, but if they can pull something like this off it sounds like it could be an incredible game. Also sounds like it'd be impossible for current generation consoles to pull something off as expansive as this; we'll just have to wait for the big reveal. This has kind of made me excited about the next generation of consoles though; didn't really care before. I also like the sound of how they're working with the music, and the concept art looks pretty cool. Paul McCartney seems like a bizarre choice, he's a great musician, but it sounds more like a marketing ploy. Beyond that I'll stop judging till I actually hear some of the game's music. I'm excited to see and find out more about this game, guess that was the point of this cock-tease.

"6 player raid," eh? How am I supposed to reconcile this language with Bungie employing Scarab Lord Luke Smith?

6 players is a group. Aint no raid.

Jeff you should get paid by bungie. You did a far better job on creating interest for this game than the 4 minute video from bungie.

Also love absolutely no WiiU mention. It's next generation, isn't it? NO!

Edited by Cybexx

It would have been nice for them to show some concrete gameplay footage, the ViDoc is mostly motion graphics versions of the concept art (most of which leaked months ago) but they do show a little bit of in-engine stuff, no action though just environments and characters running through them. Reminds me of the type of teaser trailers you see from MMOs.

If they aren't actually releasing till 2014 then I can see why their PR plan is so stingy at the moment. Its interesting to hear that the Bungie employees who talked to Jeff seemed surprised themselves that true gameplay footage was not being shown. Which indicates that they believe the game is far enough along to be shown to the public but it is just the PR plan that is holding it back.

Seems like you had some kind of serious audio issues in your video Jeff, but cool stuff none the less, thanks for the info.

Thanks for your impressions of Destiny, @jeff!

(Though, why was the audio level in this video so low? I had to turn up my speakers to three times what they usually are just to hear you.)

Jeff: "This game will be on both next gen systems"

Sorry WiiU

Despite them not really being connected, the gear thing (about remembering where you got an item) made me think of Titan Quest a bit. I remember enemies who would drop good equipment actually had it on visually (and even had the stats from it). So if some guy zapped you to hell and back with some lightning staff, he would actually drop it. The fact that this was all randomly generated was pretty neat, as the mods that increased (rare) item drop rate would actually make enemies better geared as well, which was a ton of fun. They're doing the same thing again for Grim Dawn, which is cool.

As for Destiny, the multiplayer sounds original (especially for the genre), but I hope for a Souls-like "invasion" equivalent as well. It would be an interesting addition/opposition to other people being able to help you out in your storyline.

I'd watch a Bungie Violence Documentary.

I think you have to be really crazy or vain to invite a load of journalists to see your latest game, and then resoundingly fail to show them the "game" bit.

Funny seeing Destiny in a 360 DVD case on the pre-order website. It never had a chance.

This sounds exciting.

Only when every article, review, podcast, video feature, and live broadcast on Giant Bomb begins with the words "A Grown Man in His Underwear Tells You About..." will this website have achieved the highest pinnacle of creative achievement.

I can't get off on just jars anymore - I need grown men in underwear.

I'm actually really looking forward to this game. I never could get into Halo because of the art style but this feels more "gritty" and "grown up".

I think the beginning of the feature should start with a display of your underwear, or lack there of.

My boxers claim to have a no-gap fly, but it lies. It constantly gaps. I want to know someone else has this problem. I want to know that @jeff has this problem.

I really like the AGMIHUTYA series.

At one point in the video i noticed the light shining through Jeffs quiff thing, now i cant stop looking at it

Posted by Ithmoliar

I feel we've seen this time and time again. This could be the end of that studio....

Edited by mlarrabee

This could be the best game ever made and it would still stumble because it's not Halo.

Note: if you interpreted that sentence to mean I think Halo is the greatest game made to date, read it again.

EDIT: And those bits of missing audio were caused by a compressor's attack set too low.

Posted by TooWalrus

I'm not sure if I'm excited about the multiplayer aspects, but the concept art all looks pretty great.

Is it just my computer or are there random audio cut outs?

Not just you.

Posted by CurtMan2k7

destiny sounds pretty cool, but i don't know yet..

anyone else having audio issues with this video?

Posted by DefAde

Who dares censor the Gerstman?

Also... expect an announcement at year end, that the 360 & PS3 versions ain't happening

Posted by gesi1223

It was happening for me as well, so I'm relieved to know it wasn't just me.

Posted by Zace

Sounds boring.

I'm so excited for this video game that looks exactly like all other video games. I wonder if there will be guns, and objectives, and levels.

Posted by bloodsoul5

audio cuts in and out at small intervals.

hmmm yeah the artwork is very reminiscent of Guild Wars 2 artwork, and the whole partying up and building your own story does sound like Guild Wars..

Posted by spiceninja

This game sounds like it could be something special. They should have held off a week and shown it after the PS4 reveal so they'd actually be able to show the game.

Edited by BlatantNinja23

If they were actually doing a PC version of this than they could have just shown of the game without giving people hints at what next gen is tech wise. Instead they have to stay in the dark. That or MS really wants the reveal in their conference or something.

Posted by FZackM

Sounds like a giant cocktease.

Totally worth flying out to look at concept art and pictures of the devs.

Posted by tourgen

Guild Wars in space could be fun. I like the concept art but if they're serious about a PS3 version that's not good. The tiny amount of memory in the PS3 will limit the scope of any single area. Nothing like the expansive and detailed concept art shots would be possible.

I think Bungie's ego is going to be the downfall of this. They think they are way more revolutionary than they are.

It never hurts to have ambitions; in any case it is what I wish every developer would strive for, and if it means their downfall then at least they tried; instead of making the same shit over and over like some companies do! Let's see this game in action properly first before saying it is a piece of outdated, simplistic garbage.

Posted by Bourbon_Warrior

I'm guessing the business model will be like Call of Dutys 60 dollars for the game and a few expansion packs every year that you can buy at a time or get the Elite service. I would be OK with that for a console MMO.

Posted by Jigenese

Jeff - your mic needs some help; you were cutting in and out throughout the video. Some words were completely dropped. Looking forward to the podcast to catch the missing details.

Edited by Dan_CiTi

Reminds me a lot of Phantasy Star Online, mixed with Borderlands and such with ideas from Journey and RDR multiplayer. Glad it isn't a full on MMO though, I definitely prefer this approach.

Also, the production as far as the music I really like! Cool how the music is being made in collabo with Paul and its use as an inspiration for the game itself.

Posted by NTM

Yes, it does sound ambitious and intriguing. A huge universe to explore in a sci-fi space, it sounds very good, though I'm not into MMO-like games, this seems like an exception, but with tweaks. It doesn't really seem like a game that'd come to current consoles at all, only PC and maybe next-gen. I hope it's next-gen.

Posted by graboids

from what they showed it seems like it has potential... the idea behind it is awesome, kinda reminds me of Chromehounds MP...just hope they can pull it off.

but all I can think of is this:

Are these guys still stuck on consoles or could the game come out on PC?

They're not going to put in on PC, because according to Jason Jones "And now nobody plays shooters the way they used to play them before Halo ’cause nobody wants to." Meaning on PC and with M+KB.

Kinda funny really, to have him say that and then take a chapter from Valve and their workplace.
