I can't wait for Pax Prime this year, I wish there was more of a vocal group of duders going, because then we could do a post Bombcast bar meetup.

That's some mighty fine work Marino.

Sweet. Pax East 2013 will be my first convention ever, and this is exactly what I needed! Thanks!

I'm going to try my hardest to get to PAX Prime this year, I keep missing out when the tickets go on sale.

Posted by RioStarwind

RBN sounds like it'll be a blast. All of that info is really useful as well. Great job on putting this up again Marino.

Nice guide. ~2 weeks left, can't wait!

Posted by Dalai

Now I know PAX East is just around the corner. I'll be needing this guide for sure.

I have an addition to the Eat Something paragraph. Bring a nalgene or metal refillable water bottle! There are plenty of water fountains at the expo center and I have found that I use and abuse them. Even an empy Gatorade bottle will save you from having to shell out ungodly amounts of cash for a bottle of water from a machine or a place in the food court.

Also, bring snacks if you can. I have never loved crackers and granola bars so much, especially when I was stuck in a line for a panel and realized I was getting hungry and wouldn't be able to leave for a while to get something to eat.

So here's a question that I'm not really sure there's a good answer to: With how strongly you suggest it, I would really like to try and do some after hours stuff/random meet-ups and whatnot. The problem is, I don't have a smartphone or anything to check the internet on the go. With things like this that aren't on the actual schedule, is there any other good way to find out about this stuff?

Otherwise, I've got my ticket and already plan on going to the Rock Band Night, and my only concern is the unfortunately likely event of going to the Giant Bomb Panel vs. The Protomen.

Not having a smart phone is a definite handicap in terms of unofficial events. I would suggest keeping an eye on the official forums right before you leave to get an idea of where some of the more popular things are going to be.

As for the GB panel vs Protomen, I think Protomen are scheduled to go on last, so you should be able to hustle upstairs after GB and catch most if not all of their set.

God, one of these years I need to make it to the Giant Bomb Rock Band night. I have dreams about getting up on stage and yelling a Midnight Brown or Suburban All Star song instead of whatever is actually picked.

Posted by Brewmaster_Andy

@alwaysbeclothing: Trust me, that would not be fun for you. The crowd at RBN is BRUTAL.

Yeah, that's pretty much what I figured, I'll do my best to figure something out.

That's good to know, it seemed like it figure that there were a mere three things I wanted to do at PAX, and two of them would overlap. I don't see the concert schedule on the PAX site though, will it just go up closer to the con?

Posted by Marino

@epidehl: Look at the Main Theatre schedule. The concerts are the last thing on Friday/Saturday.

Does anyone know if the giantbomb guys are having stuff on Friday night after their panel? I'm unfortunately only going on Saturday and Sunday, but will be in town on Friday. Also, any word on people doing a GB member meetup at the show? We could get a group picture for the site.

Come to think of it, last year they only checked badges to get onto the convention floor. I wonder if I could still access phoenix theatre............

I'm gonna make it to a PAX one of these days god damn it!

Here are my bits of minor advice.

  • If you might want to buy a poster, bring a mailing tube. I can't count the number of beat up posters sticking out of people's bags I've seen. They are cheap and light, and if you can't fit one in your bag going to PAX, you'll never get all the crap you acquire home.
  • Streetpassing can be a trap. As probably the densest 3DS place outside of TGS, if you find the right spot, you could literally street pass all the time. It's fun, but will still literally take many hours to do everything. While that Famicom hat is pretty great, do you want that to be the main thing you take away from PAX? Do it, but don't let it keep you from doing something cool.
  • Wash your hands before you eat (or put them in you mouth).

Yup. I mentioned the tube thing as well. Also worth mentioning, there is a FedEx store in the convention center if you buy something crazy that you can't carry home.

And, yeah, StreetPassing is a definite trap. Only do it when you're stuck in a line, taking a break, etc.

Really bummed about PAX Prime this year, I most likely won't be able to go because I just got a job at casino and getting Labor Day weekend off is near impossible. Grr why couldn't be the weekend before or after Labor Day :(. Owell I guess I can save that money and put it towards East 2014. Also for those first timers going to a PAX Street Pass is the msot addictive shit ever.

Edited by liako21

is the harmonix giantbomb panel online somewhere? i never got to see it

Posted by EpicSteve

I'll be there!

Posted by MordeaniisChaos

PAX is awesome. I'm jealous of all you going out to the East Coast to catch PAX East. But at least I have PAX Prime to look forward to this year. Last year was a bit weird because I expected it to be my last PAX for quite some time but things have changed and I've got a little more freedom left in my future lol. Have fun everyone, and listen to this man! Or women, I dunno. Pretty sure It's a dude. Whoever they are, they have it right.

Posted by rachelepithet

@marino I always forget about PAX east and usually am broke the time of year they go on sale. However, I live on the NY side of the MA border between Albany and Pittsfield, not to far a drive away, and scored RBN tickets and have ample gas money, parking money, dinner and drinks money, etc. Probably could afford a motel or AirBNB or a room chip-in share with other geeks there for the full convention. So I'm wondering, besides RBN, are there many other gamer-friendly activities after PAX closes each evening, any tips on what bars/clubs to hang out at, or any special things the attendees put together themselves (nightly LAN gaming sessions, card games back at their hotels, etc.) to look out for? Is there any Giant Bomb subscriber meetup, and friendly duders that'd let me third wheel after hours? It'd be awesome to Owen Wilson/Vince Vaughn PAX east, you know? ;-)

This just makes me wish I had the money to go to a convention.

Being poor sucks.

I am sure I will see other people besides @voxel this year. Maybe. If not Nate show me other people. Anyway I will be there.

Have fun though, seriously, I'll be fine.

No, really.

@boocreepyfootdoctor: You'll want to keep an eye on the official forums at paxsite.com for most of the unofficial stuff. There's always things going on just about 24 hours a day.

Hey guys, can someone who will go to the PAX write with me on Twitter please? I would like to have something from the PAX but it's too far away :|

Posted by Sen0r_Awes0me

@epidehl: Though they had an earlier billing at the first PAX East, the last two PAX Easts have seen the Protomen as the headlining act for Friday night concerts because they tear shit up (your throat included)! And while the PAX staff is amazing, their ability to change set-ups between musical acts have always been pretty slow. Panther and the gang probably be starting mayb 11-11:30 p.m., at the earliest (notice the 8:30 p.m.-1:30 a.m. scheduling).

Edited by Sen0r_Awes0me

My suggestions for those attending PAX East:

- Bring a phone charger and make peace with your "airplane mode" button, because the BCEC that PAX East is held in will strip your phone battery clean faster than a THQ stockholder. Though you may have to compete for plug space, it is fairly prevalent around the building.

- If you are staying in Boston somewhere far from the event, pay attention to the hours of the MBTA subway, generally referred to as "The T". Most of the last T trains out are around about 12:30-45 a.m., though the schedule is usually fluid and updated on their meh-quality website. Could save you some rushing or expensive cab rides back.

- Make some effort to eat at least one meal out in Boston proper. The city has spectacular food, though it might involve taking a bit of time off and a short T-Ride. Marino is right in that there isn't a ton of stuff near the BCEC, some pubs and hotel restaurants, but trips to somewhere like Mike's or Modern Pastry in the North End are so worth it. Actually, made a 20-30 trek south of the Convention Center to Doughboy Donuts and Deli last year to bring to an early Sunday morning meet-up. (Look how pastry-obsessed I sound!)

Someone give me a ticket and i'll go! Didn't know my stupid job would give me the days off until recently. Bastards!

I'm going to PAX East but missed, the ticket sale on the Rock Band party wanted to see the Giantbomb guys at the party, I'll catch them on the panel. This will be my first Pax.

Posted by vikingdeath1

This will be my 4th PAX East! Man living in Boston is convenient for this!

Edited by sarge1445

@vikingdeath1: Having a major con like this in your city must just be the best shit ever. In Reno we have Snafu con and going to that after PAX Prime (it takes place the month after Prime) is so god damn awful because the entire time you are comparing it to PAX

Edited by macgrill122

My buddies and I are actually hosting a Panel on this subject on the first day of PAX East at 11:00AM in the Wyvern theater. It will only be about 30 minutes long and you will definitely leave with some great tips.

Here's the info Winning the PAX East game

Hope to see you guys there.

I haven't been since PAX east 2011 and to be honest, I think that was enough PAX for me. We had a great hotel room, 3 day media badges, but the whole thing was really overwhelming. The lines for everything were ridiculous. The line for the GB panel alone was unreal. I found myself having to choose between panels because if you didn't get to a line an hour early (minimum), you were pretty much screwed. The main expo hall is sensory overload and the food is AWFUL. The best part of the whole event for me was the table top gaming area. I don't get to play DnD with many experienced players, so I was stoked to actually dig in.

If I have any advice for first time PAX goers, is to temper your expectations and be prepared to wait... a lot.

I think I mentioned this in another thread, but outside of panels, if you're actually waiting in line to play a big AAA title at PAX, you're wasting your time. In last two PAX events I've gone to, I've gone directly for the smaller or indie game stuff and never waited in line for more than 15 minutes at most.

Also I concur with the expo hall food being shit but that's every single convention. Better to go to one of the resturants or bars around Boston, but just expect like a 30 minute walk unless you take a cab.

And PAX Prime good places to eat are like 10 minutes away walking, I learned that at PAX 2011 with Skyrim it;s jsut not worth waiting for big AAA titles that are coming out in the same year. You have more fun doing all the other stuff at PAX

Anyone get their badge? The website says "Passes will start getting mailed out 2 to 3 weeks before the show," but I haven't gotten mine yet. Should I be worried?

@radixnegative2: I've had mine since last week. If you don't get your badge by the end of the day tomorrow, email pax_questions@paxsite.com and registration@paxsite.com and tell them that you haven't got your pass yet.
