Way too much whistling in this episode for my precious ears. :(

@Zeik: If you could just pick any skills you wanted, you could just make really powerful guys at your whim. I think that's the point of it being random.

Posted by Zeik

@HerbieBug: I don't really like the random inheritance system, but I don't think simply picking any skill you want is the solution. Devil Survivor essentially let you do that, and it was lame. (The system, not the game.) At the end of the game basically every demon ended up with the same skillset.

What I want to see is them greatly restrict what can be inherited by each Persona, thus cutting down on the random shuffling, and also bring back the spell cards from P3P, letting you simply give a Persona a specific ability instantly. (Though I would probably restrict that a bit more too, since it was way too easy to make ridiculously overpowered Persona's in P3P.)

Haha. Loved the Airplane reference.

I'm watching the Endurance Run again for the second time. I remember feeling cool 12:50ish because I was 17 at the time and I did see Just One of the Guys.

okay.  suggestion for Person 5:

if there's fusing, and a persona can learn a particular spell, let the player pick that spell from a list.  This randomness is awful.

Agreed. I just picked up Persona 3 Portable, and with the major number of changes and "fixes" to the game, I was expecting an easier way to reroll Personas' abilities. Nope, still gotta back out and select it again. =/ Makes no sense as to why they did it that way, since people will do that over and over again to get at least some of the skills they want.

Besides riddles are supposed to be plays on words or based on general knowledge, you know fun stuff. Fucking Japanese nerds just don't get it *sigh*.

Only on Giantbomb will you hear about Kegel exercises while watching people play a game hahaha.

Vinny whistles way too fucking loud.  I have the volume on my laptop down quite a bit and the door to my room closed and my roommates, who are downstairs, can still hear it.

There was also one of Elizabeth's requests that got you 5 million by itself.

@CH3BURASHKA: First of all, did they send me daughters... when I asked... for sons?

Secondly, yes, they changed the money system. In P4, you get a small amount of money from every battle. In P3, you got no money from battle, just from Shuffle Time or from chests. Every once in a while, you'd find a chest with an insane amount of money. It was more luck than anything.

If P4 offered a simple "pick stuff to inherit" option, they would have been done in about five. If I played the game, that would be my pet peeve. "
Try Devil Survivor on the DS.  It lets you do that and is awesome in general. "
With limitations... Instead of having 8 open slots for any type of skill, every "Persona" (they're just called demons in Devil Survivor) has room for 3 active skills, 3 passive skills, and 1 "racial" skill (pretty much every demon in the game has a unique one of these, and you can't overwrite them, so they rarely factor into the equation when it comes to fusing).

So if you have 2 active skills in mind to pass on, but the resulting demon already has 2 active skills naturally, there's only one slot available, so you have to make some tough decisions.  It's a step in the right direction, but still not quite what I hoped for from a full-fledged  "pick which skills you want to inherit" system.
Posted by Xero560

Fuse Loki! He is a badass! He gets a spell that is really awesome and I think only he can learn. I may not even be inheritable, but don't quote me on that. I think he also learns null fire or something that covers his weakness.

@Manhattan_Project: Why argue against them at all?  Let the whiners whine.  Whining at the whiners accomplishes nothing and causes bigger headaches for all involved.

So all your crying and complaining is falling on deaf ears because not only do Jeff and Vinny not care (the very reason they stopped reading the comments) but neither does anyone else here. So, you can continue to bitch and moan and scream about "OMG! LRN2PLAY! I R PERSONA MASTA! YOU SUCK!" but no one gives a shit. If the way they play the game really bothers you THAT much, I suggest you get out a little more. "
Odd, that I have also noticed you yourself to be one that has begun to regularly make posts such as these.  If you don't mind my suggestion, perhaps no one "gives a shit" about about your grievances either, and perhaps the best course of action is to let the whiners continue whining ineffectually, and for you to also "get out a little more"? "
I'm fairly sure most users are just as annoyed as him but  they, like me, just don't feel like arguing with all the "PERSONA MASTAS".

The fun of the ER is watching them play a game brand new to them and seeing their experiences with it. ANd like many others have said, is there a "wrong way" to play the game? Because if so, then that "way" is actually serving them pretty well. Everyone plays the Persona series in their own style, that is, unless you followed a FAQ or guide."
I'd call it more a matter of efficiency than style.  There are optimal ways (but probably not an optimal way) to play this game, ones they have not achieved.  They can't be blamed for this, since it's a genre, and series, somewhat unfamiliar to them.  They've done great despite many of the things they've skipped out on, however, and that's been entertaining to watch.

"
Actually you're pretty much spot on. The only thing is, you can only make use of 2 "element boosts". What I mean is, ice boost and ice amp stack, ice amp/boost and the icicle vow will also stack, but not all 3 together.

Loki (the persona you're talking about) also learns Niflheim, the most powerful ice attack in the game, and he's the only guy that gets it. But there's no way V&J could know that without fusing him.

The ER made me buy P4, and when it comes to RPG's I'm a total completionist (not something I'm really proud of) so naturally I wanted to not only complete the Compendium but make some beastly personas. At first I struggled greatly, and one of my first complaints was exactly the same as yours.

My mind set was that I was prepared to (and often did) spend many hours trying to fuse a persona with specific inherited skills, and it often got me kinda stressed out. Why couldn't they - if not let you just choose which skills you wanted to inherit, or perhaps one or 2 that would always carry over and the rest be random - at the very least just give you a damn re-roll button D:

It is definitely a significant shortcoming in the design of this game, at face value at least. However, since they didn't make it so simple, it provoked me to learn more about the fusion system, and what can I say, it's probably one of the deepest systems I've encountered in any game ever. It really is quite incredible just how much you can do with it.

Learning about personas preferences when it comes to skill inheritance as well as how skills are grouped together in the first place is absolutely key to getting the most out of the fusion system. The downside is that kind of stuff is strictly FAQ material, unless you're willing to devote huge amounts of time figuring it all out for yourself with trial and error.

Once you know all this though, despite being unable to precisely choose what skills you want when you fuse, it's actually often quite simple to set up fuses so that only the skills you want as well as maybe a couple others (with similar odds of being chosen) can carry over, resulting in minimal time actually spent doing what Vinny ends up doing in this episode, going back and forth until you get the skills you want.

Regardless, setting up the fuses could potentially take up more time than just hoping for luck to give you what you want by chance - but for me, the satisfaction of just seeing the skills I wanted popping up after just a few attempts far outweighed the stress of often sitting there for hours and getting screwed by randomness. As demonstrated in this video it can get to you pretty quickly, especially if you don't really understand the system.

Don't get me wrong, it's obvious what I just said is beyong V&J, probably not only in terms of available time but I also doubt it appeals to them or many of the viewers of the ER, so I'm not saying it's something they should do. Simply, if you're prepared, you can overcome the "shortcomings" of the fusion system with some time and effort. You'll also end up with some totally OP personas... :D

damn that was longer than I thought... sorry.

Yeah, noise control is one of the dumbest aspects of fusing.
