My sister's friends are avid Twitards and I've seen the threads. There is quite of few guys on it. "
Wait, there are FORUMS for Twilight?  I figured they all just met up in the woods and sprinkled glitter on each other.

girls are gross.

This is a bit of a tangeant but I have to get this out before I 'splode.

Nothing irritates me more than female gamers who go out of their way to declare that they are indeed REAL GIRLS who play VIDEO GAMES, and then take embarrassingly sensuous pictures with say, a PSP. "Oh hi I'm a Gamer Girl. I hope this gets your attention but don't hit me, tee hee!" . Gamer Girl is quite possibly the saddest fucking thing you could call yourself.

Same goes for the males that get shocked out their skulls over the thought that a girl might enjoy electronic gamery. Get a goddamned GRIP.

Ah, better.

@Turbo_Toaster: couldn't agree more. my current pet hate is the youtube 'sensation' "NintendoFanGirl". She is a disgrace to females who happen to play video games, she makes me want to gouge out my eyes and pour hot wax into my earholes then burn myself and my laptop.

I have to agree with this wholeheartedly. I still don't see how it's so hard to believe that girls do play games. It's always some strange big ass shock to guy's, or it get's you a big freaking target on your back if it's even mentioned. *head desk*

a choice quote: ".. wanted to make a site that was full of (hopefully!) useful information but presented in an attractive way, with a particular lack of machoness!"
i have no problem with 'machoness' in 'websites for men'. i don't need something to be written in baby pink comic sans ms to understand it.

I think the problem is your use of the term girl. I prefer dudette! I can't see how "girls" could relate to any of this, dudettes however would! A video game woman is a man's woman, like Elaine Benes. No I'm not a dudette, just a dude.

Hmph. I was going to bitch about greenpixels.com, but they have apparently been lumped into whattheyplay.com. God, even worse.

Posted by Turbo_Toaster

It seems like the ones who make it their mission to play up the "girl" aspect don't actually play or know a whole heck of a lot about games. It's just a niche that they've figured out is relatively untapped and therefore easier to get attention in. In a weird way it's almost like....who are they trying to convince?

@Tireyo643: Did you cyber with her?

But the thing is, females will always stand out more as gamers because this is, and probably will be for a very long time, a "male" pass time.  A lot of gamers want girls to appreciate the hobby, and a lot actively search for "gamer girls".  I mean, that's basically the reason women like Jessica Chobot, Morgan Webb or the previously mentioned Youtube user "NintendoFanGirl" are popular: because they're girls interested in video games.

Most of their fans are creepy guys and not females, guys who just need a girl to have gaming as a hobby.  It's nice to see that there are girls interested in video games who don't like standing out and bringing attention to themselves.  Those are probably, mostly the girls who are actually interested in the hobby and don't just want to have geek attention.

Exactly.  This Giant Bomb blog post about Youtube user UltraNeko is basically about that: a girl who didn't really like video games, but managed to build a big fanbase and climb her way up the fame ladder.  I mean, she got to attend E3 and rounded up Metal Gear voice actors, and she just started as a Youtube user.  A guy wouldn't have been able to get as popular as quickly.

What's a 'girl'?

I cant believe I have read every single post in this thread.  I have a headache now.  *tear*

I've seen a couple... one in a thread that derailed when the girl told a creep that his PM was inappropriate. Was funny to see the guy squirm :P
But yeah, hopefully you'll not be bombarded by PMs...

edit: just wanted to add something else. Although girl gamers should be accepted as norm just like guys, it's a sad fact that a higher percentage of guys enjoy games than girls. Out of all the girls i know, maybe 1/10th were interested in games and pretty much all of those girls played very "casual" games like wii sports. I have yet to find a single girl in real life who could share my interest in games, or most peoples here for that matter. I have yet to find a single girl who would give me a run for my money in an online FPS and that's probably why most guys shit themselves at the knowledge of a girl on a videogame website. You wouldn't be signed up here if you weren't one of us ;)

OH man, I can't give you, your run for your money FPS style but I know my sister can. She's so addicted to MW2 she get's at least in the top three everytime. No joke. I'm pretty impressed every time I watch her play, she's damn dedicated to perfection. I'm more of an RPG type myself, I wish I could play that good.  Cue in the robotic talk "ONE. OF. US." lol

Well, it only goes to show that sex sells. Most guys want to watch/listen to girls for one reason. If a girl is a gamer, guys think they have a better chance to get with her, and thus it makes her more appealing. The only other reason a guy would want to look at a girl is because she is interesting - and if that is the case, he probably is subscribed to more than just girls when it comes to that topic.

Guys/fans feel "rejected," like she broke up with them, and thus get pissed off. They then have a negative feeling towards all girls who claim to be ______ until they have proven otherwise.

Thus, girls "use" guys for the purpose of fame, and then guys stop caring about girls who claim to be ______, and the girl in question is forever recognized as a liar and (quite possibly) blackballed.

Take AppleMilk1988 (Aka: Emily Connor) for example. She "used" guys to try to become a famous singer. It backfired when she went and did some risque photo shoots and made a video that revealed her body. She lost a lot of fan because of that. I would guess that her male fans got upset and felt like she had betrayed them, mostly because they don't understand the cultural difference between Japan and America, and couldn't accept this as something "Normal," labeling her as a slut. Of course, if you see her photos, you might think that too, despite me telling you that it is "normal" for girls in Japan to do that.

Then again, I doubt she ever asked for "donations" like UltraNeko did: "If I were to do a new gaming show, how much would you guys donate per show?"

I got another question for you girls out there..
