@takua108: Alright dude... you're completely fucking fired.

How dare you show the rest of us up so goddamn consistently and to such degree. But seriously, you should totally be the next Whiskey Media intern. I will protest if you are not.

This is... wow.

I'm not interested in taking part in the beta (nothing against the OP, I'm just too lazy/not attentive enough to hunt out the bugs), but maybe there are ways of spicening up the betting other than just how much in advance you call it? Like, say, including accumulator/combination betting i.e. you make a number of wagers based on one amount of XP points, and if you get them all right, you come out with a greater sum (for less of a wager, bear in mind, which is the main point of an accumulator) than you would had you made the bets individually. BUT If even one of the wagers fail, then the accumulator is lost. Obviously the more wagers you make to that one bet, the greater the multiplier, but the greater the risk...(cue dramatic music, or whatever)

So for example there's a 2-1 on Brad rating something x, a 2-1 on Ryan rating something else y, and a 2-1 on Jeff rating another game z. If you put 10 points on each, you'll come out with, well, double the amount you put in (I guess a net gain of 30 in this case at most if you bet on all three). With an accumulator you're betting on x,y & z at the same time in one go and the odds will be 6-1. So if you put 10 on that particular bet, you'll come out with 60 having only paid in 10, thus a 50 point profit (I hope I got all that right).

Jus' saying.

I am fully behind this,

How hard do you think it would be to code though?
Posted by mfpantst

Hey so I read your commented out code of the 'rules' and have a lingering question:
You allow us to bet on different reviewers.  How does that work?  What I mean is say I bet that all 4 reviewer options give a game 3/5 stars, and one of them reviews the game and gives them a 3/5.  Do I 'win out' or do I win a portion because I bet that all 4 would give the game a 3/5.

Also can you come up with a way to show betting trends?  I think the other thing I would suggest is split out 'ici spent' and 'ici won' in your leaderboards.

This looks like a ton of fun. If you could throw me in there, it'd be much appreciated.

Posted by gla55jAw

That's awesome. If I can get in to the beta that would be great!

Posted by Brenderous

This sounds really awesome!

I'd totally like access if I could have it.

I'm down for this. Invite please!

First off, I've done away with most of those rules in favor of just "you place a bet on a game, and once it's reviewed, the bet gets taken care of. If it doesn't get reviewed, you cancel the bet." As for how the betting on different reviewers works: basically, you're allowed to predict a score for each reviewer, and then when the game is reviewed, it'll pull the name of the person who reviewed the game and check the review score against your predicted score for that person. So let's say I bet that Brad would give Game X a 3/5, Jeff would give it a 4/5, Ryan would give it a 4/5, and Vinny would give it a 5/5. The game comes out, and the review is written by Ryan, who gives it a 4/5. Since that's how I predicted Ryan would review it, I win. There's no penalty for choosing scores for other reviewers. That's why I added the whole "choose one score for each dude" system in the first place: so you don't say "eh, this game will probably get a 5/5," just to have someone who you didn't think would review it give it a 4/5 (not that this is really a problem at Giant Bomb, but still). I'm going to rewrite the "rules" page soon and explain all of this in hopefully-easy-to-read terms.

@dudeglove:

 This is something I wanted to do from the start, and something that I still plan to experiment with. The method of betting I ended up using is alright in that it gives you a bonus multiplier depending on how early you "call it," but I took the easy route of "paying out" the bets using an infinite bank of points and not actually using bet points in a "pot" or anything like that. Since this is just a pet project of mine, this method works alright for the time being, but I may choose to rewrite the whole thing at some point in the future. Thanks for the Wikipedia article link, though, as I didn't know what to search for on the Internet for "how complex betting systems work" when I was conceptualizing this months back. Also, I added you to the beta list in case you just want to try the game out; you don't have to actively search for bugs if you don't want to.

Thanks for all of the feedback, guys! Also, if you make a post asking for beta access and I don't reply immediately, try registering again; I may have added you to the list, but not posted about it so as not to spam the topic too much.

EDIT: Also woohoo, pinned topic :D

EDIT AGAIN: Also, Top Men, if you're reading this: I would love to add Screened.com support, but there's no API yet... :D

Can I get in please?

@Empirepaintball: Of course!

EDIT: Woot, 108 bets placed :3

You're letting Ethan bet? That dude has all sorts of inside knowledge, or at least he should.

Haha, I should probably do something special for staff members eventually. I was considering not allowing the reviewers themselves to bet (at the very least on themselves), but I doubt they'll actually use this at all anyways.

i gotta say i love the descriptions on everything on the website. it makes it much more pleasing to read those walls of text :P

Nicely done my friend. I'd love to be a beta-testerer

@takua108: Thanks for adding me. Also I like the easter egg.
Posted by takua108
@jukezypoo: You're now on the list! Go forth, and gamble away to your heart's content.

@Tactical_Kill: You're welcome! I hope more people find the Easter egg :D

Ooooh I want in on some of this action! haha.

Makes me wanna get back into web devving again. To do: learn PHP, HTML5, brush up on javascript :p

EDIT: Just took a look at the source. I lol'd at your div id's haha.

Posted by takua108
@cjmabry: Alright, you're in! And yeah, building something like this was a great re-learning experience, and I'd definitely recommend building a project with the Giant Bomb API to help you do the same. As for those silly div id's, that's mostly to make it so that when you're viewing the website with ad-blocking software, it shows an irritated little message where the ad should be :)

Love to added to this, testing FTW!

Posted by ShadowVirus

Hey me again, still can't register. It's weird though, I typed in a fake username, it worked. (just said I wasn't on the list) So does that mean somethings up with my profile, could you maybe take me off the beta list and then put me back on, would that even do anything or am I just being an idiot?

Posted by mfpantst

Makes sense about the way the betting works.  Funny part is I had the opposite reaction- I saw the 4 choices and figured if I chose one of them wrong (even if choosing another right) I'd get screwed.  In any case, I like the way you set it up.

Posted by RobotHamster

That's pretty awesome.

Posted by faustyn

i'd love to try this. looks awesome :o

Does the currency we use have a name? If not I suggest calling it Ryan Davis Dollars.

Posted by CandleJakk

This is awesome, and I want in.

Posted by takua108
@jukezypoo: @faustyn: @CandleJakk: All three of you are in, enjoy!

@ShadowVirus: Sorry about the inconvenience... see if it works now.

Woohoo! Fifty users! Awesome! :D

Sounds cool, I want to try it!

@takua108: Thanks, that worked. I'm on step two now, but now this message has popped up, thought you might want to know.

Posted by InfamousBIG
@takua108: I'd like to try this out!
Edited by takua108
@ShadowVirus: Alright, sorry about everything; I don't know what went wrong, but I ended up deleting all of your stuff off my database, hopefully that fixes the problem. You'll have to do the infamous Step Two again, using a newly-generated code, but it should work now.

@infamousBIG you're on the list now :)
Posted by InfamousBIG
@takua108:
Dude, fuck you.  Step 2 makes me wish I had a burrito now. :)

impressive!

Any chance of taking bets on GOTY?

Posted by BackpackKat

Can i get in the bee ta?

Posted by InfamousBIG
@takua108: Hmmm.....step 2 isn't working for me.  I've waited about 2 hours.  That's a long microwave time!
Edited by takua108
@JohnAsscream: You're on the list now, enjoy :)

@mosespippy:

 That is an incredible idea, and I'm going to think about how I can do that. It'll be a manual process for sure, not automatic, because there's no API stuff for GOTYs, but yeah, great idea.

@InfamousBIG:

 Could you try again right now? I've been having a bunch of trouble with Step Two and I think I might've finally worked it out. As a result, I have a ton of users who have gotten to Step Two but not past it (including @tatum and @snide... :( ). Hopefully the changes I've made will fix any problems you've been having.

Remember, live demo, folks!

EDIT: Oshi- MAINTENANCE MODE! I found the problem and I'm fixing it.
Edited by takua108

Alright, sorry about the problems, people. They should be solved now (no seriously, this time for reals).

In case you missed the entertaining "under construction" screen that I must've thrown together in the wee hours of the morning because I entirely forgot that I even made it, you can see it here

You're going to have to re-enter a newly-generated code on your "about me" page if you were stuck at Step Two of the registration process. Sorry for the inconvenience, but I think the majority of the buggery is sorted out, for the time being.

@takua108: Thanks for all your help, I've now managed to register and have started betting. Sorry for being such a nuisance, but thanks! :)
Posted by Sinkwater

Can I get in on this?

Posted by takua108
@Sinkwater: You sure can! :D

@ShadowVirus: No, thank you; if you hadn't inadvertently stumbled into my sloppy design flaws, I wouldn't've found out about them. The system still needs a lot of tweaking, but hey, this is a beta, that's what it's for :)
Posted by takua108

Just a quick reminder for anyone who tried to register an account in the past two days and encountered errors... it's fixed now, and I'm waiting for you to finish registering :)

Posted by Winternet

I want to enter this, please.

Posted by takua108
@Winternet: Alrighty!
Posted by Winternet

Question: Shouldn't my xp in GB carry into ici points? I have 0 ici points and I clearly don't have 0 xp.

Posted by takua108
@Winternet: You have to press the "XP -> Points" button when you first register, and then every time you gain XP thereafter.
