Leviathon.

Even back in 2011... Oh Patrick!

When I first heard about the big reveal at the end of the first game I pictured something more along these lines.

Posted by Sunjammer

I dunno why people insist on using these shitty games to convince people that FPS doesn't work with motion controls. Metroid Prime 3 was fucking stellar. What you can't do is just shoehorn motion controls into whatever and expect it to work.

Posted by gogobomb

the conduit definitely isnt a great game, but i still don't think it's as bad as some people say it is, the first one is mediocre but not bad. and this one looks, well still mediocre but better than the first one, even so i kinda liked the first conduit despite its mediocrity, so ill probably still pick the conduit 2 up used when it's at a low price or something.

actually no, cause it was never supposed to be "Nintendo's big successful FPS series". The original was a (not very good) labor of love from the High Voltage guys who wanted to see a traditional FPS on the Wii that also pushed the tech. Nintendo embraced their efforts and gave them a push at their media briefings. Nobody ever claimed this would be either "big" or hugely "successful".

You can say their heart is in the right place but they're trying too hard in some cases (throwing in all those visual effects) and in others not enough (art direction, basic concept of setting/narrative).

I've only played and finished Conduit 1 and, as I said, it wasn't very good but also not as bad as it looks here. Once you get a hang of the controls and/or change button layouts and then get used to the Wiimote aiming it's totally playable - and in Conduit 2's case you can even simply use a Classic Controller Pro and not worry about motion crap at all.

Still, I applaud them for trying but apparently it didn't result in a great game. The Metroid Prime games, the GoldenEye remake and maybe even the CoD ports are ultimately the better games of that genre on the Wii (probably a matter of budget+experience)

When a games freezes its a gift from the developer!

What a vomit inducing pile of crap. I'm sure this game is a lot better played on the pro classic controller but it gives me a headache just watching it. Love the quick look though, hard lock ups are always great for a laugh.

Posted by Jonnyflash80

Quick looks that end with a hard lockup are my favorite.

But seriously, I found it so hard to watch this with all the depth of field, bloom effects, and overall jitteryness of the camera (especially when meleeing).  This is not a good game.

GiantCynicism.com. It's a website. About men complaining about video games.

The MP5KA4 is a real gun, as is the SPAS 12 (aka the Franchi SPAS-12). The K is for Kurz ('short', as in it has no stock) and the A4 denotes that it has a 3 round burst function.

Still...

Terrible game, utterly utterly terrible.
I was laughing at that bit of the QL, just talking shiiiiit and not even knowing it. But if they did know about firearms they might spend time complaining about how COD worthlessly models weapons despite the budget for the game. No one wants to listen that on this site I guess.

Like others I have watched the ending to the Conduit 2, it is seriously amazing.

Goddamn that FOV. What is it at, like 30?

Edited by Fjordson

I don't know what's worse, Kelpek featured in videos, or shooters on the Wii. An epic battle of all things bad.

Posted by ArbitraryWater

The ending to the quick look was almost poetic, in a way.

Still bemused as to why Wii (and Move, I suppose) FPSs have this rubbery arm failing thing going on. Why not just a reticle locked in the centre of the screen like every other game and move it around as you would with the mouse on the PC, just with the pointer. Some technical issue or what?
Just goes to show that Jurassic Park: Tresspasser was released on the wrong platform!

Blurriest quick look ever, is "bad depth of field effects" the new "N64 fog" to compensate for limited rendering power?

What? You expect them to actually pay attention to that stuff so that the game can be accurately represented? That's not how these quick looks ever work.
I remember Jeff did the same thing on the Demon Souls quick look. I know that is a hard game and all, but because it is so different thats more the reason to be paying attention during the tutorial. Something vital like aiming down the sights could be missed.

I would totally pick it up for like $10... maybe $20 bucks, but nothing more.  These crappy romps are kind of fun every once and again.  And GoldenEye 007 on the Wii is great which is a bad thing in itself because it gives me hope. :(

This actually looks like a lot of fun. Also all of Patrick's criticisms are super petty.

The first thing you did was max out the dead zone

and you're wondering why the controls were terrible?
I like Wii controls for FPSes. Not love, like. There aren't many good FPS games on the system (period, can not be argued, and you know what, Conduit 2 isn't even that great a game) and the control scheme has caveats (I'm not going to act like it's the end all, because it's not, not quite), but it works fairly well for shooters, as long as you're not completely braindead (I wanted to use some stronger words, but I'd rather not get banned from my first post) when you're customizing the controls.

But you were, Ryan. Oh, you definitely were. You maxed the deadzone. Do you know what a deadzone is? It's that thing that determines how far you have to point for the camera to start turning. It's kind of important (durrrr), and you fucked it up right from the get-go lol. What bothers me is the drove of fools acting as though this video is representative of every potential experience someone could have with an FPS controlled with a motion sensitive controller.

Yeah, that's right, I quoted my own post, even edited it a little. Why? Because hey, if the rest of you are allowed to be doofuses, well then dammit I am too
I'm sure ryan knows what a deadzone is, he made it as big as possible to try to fix the little tiny movement that happened WITHIN the deadzone.  He wanted to be able to point without the screen moving and go off the screen to make himself turn...

Dual analog sticks are still the way to go for console FPS (at the moment). If you go online with Conduit 2 the best players are all using the classic controller, same with Goldeneye and Black Ops Wii. The motion controller > dual analog sticks for FPS debate has been squashed; analogs have won. That said, Nintendo are putting a touch screen on their next controller, which may prove to be better than using analogs for FPS.

Hoffman Estates is a suburb of Chicago and also about ten minutes from where I grew up. Patrick apparently thinks he comes off as a cooler dude claiming to have grown up in the boonies instead of the burbs.

It would be interesting to see how the situation would change with a second analog stick where you could have regualr FPS dual analog controls and still have the Wiimotes ability to shot at any point on the screen, to bad that Nintendo didn't include that.

Whoa, that actually sounds pretty brilliant
Posted by zitosilva

I was thought that all the problems with FPSs on the Wii were solved by Metroid Prime 3 (which, okay, wasn't a FPS, but the system could function in the genre). I don't get why others simply didn't copy them.

Posted by Vigil80

I hate the Wii so much.

What's that? You say the Project Cafe controller will have dual analog sticks? You're damn right it will.

Posted by dvorak
@GrandMilato: Yeah you're definitely right about that. I went back and looked at some of the old screenshots. It's DEFINITELY better looking than the first one.
Posted by StingingVelvet

Holy shit the aiming in that looks terrible.  I remember when the Wii came out people acted like it was going to finally kill the mouse as the best way to control FPS games, but nope... didn't happen.  Now I see why.

Posted by WiqidBritt
@Pepsiman: to be honest, that game was never meant to be a shooter, and the original Dead Rising had it's own set of odd problems that made it tedious even with proper controls
Posted by targetrender

It looks like crap.  But of course, it's a Wii game so it's to be expected.

Posted by Skillface

I don't think making the player fiddle with the settings for a while in order to make the game playable is good game design.

Posted by wwfundertaker

What a shit game but it made for great entertainment.

" Imo the problem is that the pointer is not 1:1 to the movement of where ou are actually pointing, same problem in Golden Eye for Wii. The only game that did it well (AND REALLLY WELL!) was Metroid Prime 3. "
The core problem is that you control both aim and turning with your cursor and the switch from controlling one to the other is always weird, thus you will never get good FPS controls with a Wii. The reason why it wasn't a problem in Metroid was that you didn't control turning while fighting, you would simply lock on to an enemy and turning would be automatic, thus you could focus on aiming. If you try to play Metroid without lock-on it becomes nearly unplayable.

It would be interesting to see how the situation would change with a second analog stick where you could have regualr FPS dual analog controls and still have the Wiimotes ability to shot at any point on the screen, to bad that Nintendo didn't include that.

I think the only way to do a good shooter on the Wii is to simply not try to do a classic FPS, both Metroid lock-on and Resident Evil 4's way where you control turning with your left stick and don't turn much at all when going into shooting mode work well, everything that tries to replicate regular dual-analog on the other side is a failure.

That was great. Laughed my ass off during this quicklook and Ryan/Patrick is an excellent combination. Game is garbage though.

Posted by dropabombonit

Ryan's experience with this game in the first 15 mins of this quick look  is the same as I had with the first game. But a Red Steel 2 was awesome on the Wii and it just looked great and not just "for a Wii game"

If the pointer was 1:1 to your movement, you'd turn left and be looking at the left wall of your living room, instead of the TV.
