How much was he getting paid?

Posted by Blubba

What a joke. I can't believe Nintendo fleeced me like that. I won't be surprised when the Wii U bombs considering they continue to treat their die-hard fans like shit. The real reason no one is buying a 3DS is because the best game is a remake of a game I already own.

And I don't want 20 old ass games. Especially since I own most of those too. How about you give me a choice of 3 original DS games that I missed out on? I'll take Elite Beat Agents, Rhythm Heaven, and Mario & Luigi. That's probably 80 dollar value at this point and none of them are recent.

@endless_void: I don't think they could possibly have gone that long without dropping the price. Well, maybe if they released content for it they could have, but that'sprobably not enough to save it at this point, not alone anyway. I just think they should have offered an actual game or two (maybe a choice of one of the worthwhile games coming in the future?), or just refunded the money. It's hard to complain about the price drop, it's more the issue of how people are being treated if they already trusted Nintendo to give them a worthwhile experience for their money, and then didn't get that at all.

I decided on March 27th that the 3DS was worth $250 when I bought it at that price. I have nothing to complain about. Free games? WarioWare? Yes please!

Will you first have to link you're club nintendo account? because my 3ds won't accept my account and nintendo doesn't respond to emails...

I like this. This is some classy actions, I don't care what anybody says. How many other executives would cut HALF of their salary upon a failed launch? If Apple put out something that had lower than projected sales, do you think Steve Jobs would take a dollar cut? much less half? No, totally not.

This is some class on Nintendo's part.

Am I the only one who still doesn't think this is enough? This didn't seem genuine or heartfelt at all, it seemed pretty boiler-plate to me. They fucked up, they should have been giving people something more than a bunch of games most of us have played on 30 different platforms a million times. PSN users lost online capability for a couple months, and got significant, recent, good games for that. 3DS Early adopters get pretty royally screwed by paying for something that never gets any software worth picking up and then they drop the price before most people even get any use out of them and they get 20 games from 20 years ago? Sony get's shit for their games already having been played, but Nintendo doesn't? On top of that, I'm pretty sure the time window for doing the Sony stuff was a good bit more than 2 weeks that they are giving for this Nintendo thing. Plus those games were available right then and there. Not in later months, like I'm hearing this Nintendo stuff will be.

...Really? The difference is that Sony's network got compromised, with personal information that was leaked, including credit card information. They're response was a bunch of games that most PS3 owners already had, and a 'tough shit' attitude if you already owned them.   This was a huge leak of personal information, and they games they releae also costed them very little.

3DS early adopters get games that haven't came out on this system (I can see having an issue with them just being virtual console games, but again, no one on the console has them for this system.)  The situation for this? A price drop, that every other tech companies (such as Apple) go through and usually says "lol, no recourse for you."

One of these situations included a pretty serious breach of security. The other is a company trying to do good by it's customers for a price drop that was necessitated a bit earlier than they'd like.

I think Nintendo has stated they have no interest in selling DS or 3DS games online for download. Shame because as we move forward I want my portable gaming collection to be all download. I have a PSP and only have one UMD, it was Chains of Olympus for $5 new so it was a steal, but the rest of my collection is downloaded. Going forward with the Vita I intend on keeping that mentality.

You do realize the hypocrisy of your statement, aye? "I don't want 20 old ass games, I want 3 slightly less old games" "I don't want games I already own, I want games I missed" This is all about you, you self-centered, self-entitled wimp. They're giving us something that they don't have available on the current mobile platform. NES games and GBA games. Anybody that has any of the 3 games you listed can still be played on a 3DS, so that's good for even less people than the original offer.

What this company is doing is something it shouldn't have to do at all. In a technological industry where every other price drop and upgrade is met with a "tough shit, give us more money," it's AMAZING that Nintendo is offering 20 free and exclusive games, AND that the management is taking a pay-cut rather than laying off half of it's development staff, like any normal company would do. You sir, are an embarrassment.

Fucking gamer self entitlement. I don't know what sort of epic struggle you think you guys survived, but saying a company owes you because you bought something that didn't sell well is just MIND BOGGLING.

PSN is free. You can't expect them to give people money especially considering how easy it is to make an account. Second, they we're attacked. Sure they could have done something better to protect their users, but I'm sure majority of large corporations out there would have been just as vulnerable if they were in the same situation.

Point is, all of the mistakes made by Nintendo so far was their fault. I'm not saying what they are offering to compensate those who are affected isn't as good as what Sony offered. It's just easier to be critical of them because they did this to the users directly.

I'm listening....

Now change something about the $40 price on games and I might reach for my wallet.

Posted by Orbitz89

Gamer sense of self entitlement, it never ceases to piss me right the fuck off.. you people saying they owe you anything are fucking retarded. Like a number of people have said.. you made the choice to plop down 250 dollars at retail for one of these things and you have only yourself to blame.. i bought one at launch as well and i don't get any use out of the damn thing except for when i want to play 10 minutes of Zelda. Nintendo doesn't owe you fucktarded douche nozzles a damn thing, grow the fuck up and stop acting like wailing vaginas.

This whiny bullshit that permeates through the entire Video game spectrum has gotten to the point where, in my personal opinion, the word "Gamer" should be used as a derogatory word, similar to racial slurs, as "Gamers" in my experience have only proven time and time again to be the whiniest pieces of self entitled trash on this earth.

No, working customer service, I agree-definitely no monetary reimbursement. Even for the PSN Plus owners.  And you're right, they were attacked--and one of the things they got was a list of credit card numbers. It does happen with online infrastructure; it's the risk we take when we plug our credit card numbers in. However, as a company, the PCI DSS (Link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Payment_Card_Industry_Data_Security_Standard) should be something they adhere to more religiously. An open .txt file doesn't quite fit that. I'll admit here I don't have a 100% confirmed source on that, but it does seem like Sony was hit amazingly easy for a company their size.

I agree that part of Nintendo's sales figures is definitely they're fault. With their line up of "Look at all the cool new games... later!",  I can see why people would say "Let's.. just wait until all the cool new games come out." I'm not questioning people's ire at being out of that money.  I just don't know why people are being hypercritical of a price drop in an industry where those are common, and most companies usually don't do more than price matching within the 2 weeks prior to the drop.  Especially when compared to the same sort of 'reward' for a company who got their systems compromised  and personal information leaked.

The 3DS was rushed anyways, I remember when the DS was launched they had good games that you could buy for it to keep you satisfied until another game came out like Super Mario 64 DS or Mario Kart DS, not only that but the DS was cheaper too and at the time "revolutionary". Now it's play with a virtual dog or play a replay of a game you probably already replayed 5 times. (Not saying Zelda is a bad game, it just gets boring after the 6th time)

I bet people wouldn't be so acerbic if they got to choose 20 of their games. Fire Emblem all the way.

You have to remember that company CEOs are paid a fairly high salary per year but that's not where they make their dollars.  It's the bonuses that give them big returns.  You can bet that Nintendo's CEO walks away every quarter with multi million dollar bonuses that are not linked at all to a salary.  It's why you will sometimes see a CEO taking a salary cut to $1 without blinking simply because his contractual retention bonus is probably 2-3 times higher.

I'm personally more-or-less alright with it.  Would I like to have spent $80 less on my 3DS?  Sure, of course.  I could buy Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 with that money.  But at the same time, I appreciate that Nintendo is going out of their way to make it up to those people who did have enough faith in the 3DS to buy one despite a lack of must-own or compelling software.  While I have some of those games already, they're still giving me games that I don't and haven't played yet, and the ones I do have are good enough that I could easily play them again.  And it's not like they're forcing you to choose between a selection of games like Sony's "Welcome Back" initiative, either.  You're just getting all of them.  And I'm good with that.

On another note...

Seriously, can we be a little more diplomatic about things, please?  I don't agree with the self-entitlement of "gamers" either, but you're not exactly presenting the case that your way of thinking is any better than those of these alleged "fucktarded douche nozzles."  I like Giant Bomb's community because its members tend to be more civilized and open-minded than a bunch of other online communities out there, and I'd rather it not be sullied by overblown ranting and immature name-calling.  I can go to many, many other websites for that, thank you very much.

Boohoo, I bought something and now other people get to buy it for less and all Nintendo is doing is giving me free stuff that they have no obligation whatsoever to give away.

People are the worst! Consoles and portables have become incredibly complex, powerful pieces of hardware and at the moment they cost less than most older hardware did at some point. Game prices, when corrected for inflation, are incredibly low even though game development is more expensive than ever before. And the quality of these games, both production quality and entertainment quality, is higher than ever before. Yet all people do is bitch and moan about how expensive games are and how they should be getting more for less. People are the worst!

No one was forced to buy the thing when it first came out so there is no reason for people who are loose with their money to complain. Their lineup was all about the "future releases" being amazing and not so much the launch titles (not that many systems have great launch games). Nintendo is a business and the only reason to be in business is to make money; if they feel the price drop is needed then so be it.

I don't know if they released the system too soon or development for the games Nintendo fans really wanted is taking too long but I can't be the only one who thought paying 250$ to play Ocarina was an awful idea. Just my opinion I didn't buy one so I can't say if the deal for early buyers is "fair" (But I will use the term very loosely)

Posted by Deadboy

I'm an early adopter and actually happy about the announcement. I think more people should be enjoying the 3DS as much as I am. The only people I feel bad for are the ones who just recently bought the system. I'd be mad if I bought it last week and then they made the price cut announcement, free games or not.

Actually now that I think about it, I wish Nintendo just gave me 80 dollars to remove the stick in your ass. It's obviously going to be an expensive procedure, because it must be really stuck in there if you got so upset you called me an embarrassment because I'm pissed off about losing money

How the hell am I self-centered? I basically JUST LOST 80 DOLLARS. That situation sucks no matter how hard you waive those cute pom-poms and do your cheer for Nintendo. Nobody anticipated this price drop. Who price drops a gaming device after 6 months? NOBODY. You can't sit there and say people should have expected this. It was a surprise to everybody, it's absolute bullshit to say otherwise. The price isn't the reason why the 3DS isn't selling.

And I don't care if people are taking paycuts. Nintendo should have anticipated all of this. The Wii is basically dead. The only notable release recently was Wii Play Motion. 3DS not selling well? Maybe it's because the best game is a remake. Games? Well, did I mention Wii Play Motion? Perhaps you would like to visit the DSi store? Giant Bomb just put up a new trailer for My Farm Australia, I'm really pumped for that. Are you starting to see why Nintendo is losing money, or do I still need to spell it out for you?

Lets not be stupid, either. You might think Nintendo doesn't have to do anything, but they kinda do. You think this won't come back around when the Wii U comes out? Lets be honest, the Wii U launch will probably suck, but Nintendo has always been able to rely on their die-hards to have faith in them. Those die-hards are currently pissed (for multiple reasons). It's in Nintendo's best interest to do well by those people.

But they certainly aren't doing well by me. I don't need another platform to play those games. I can get out DS lite to play GBA games and my Wii has loads of Virtual console stuff, and knowing Nintendo, none of those virtual console purchases will carry over! But like you said, I'm a self-centered, self-entitled wimp. I just lost 80 dollars, but it's okay Nintendo is going to give me games I already own! I should jump for joy, how silly of me! All I did was propose another offer that would mean way more to me, I never knew feelings would get hurt. I guess didn't realize I would be offending the Nintendo cheerleaders. I'm looking forward to you essay about why gaming enthusiasts should like the Wii more.

The part of the 3DS owner-rage that baffles me is that, even though this is earlier than most price cuts, it isn't like the 3DS was never going to take significant price cuts. And spoilers here, there are going to be more in the future. There are a whole slew of risks for being an early adopter of any technology, primarily the fact that you don't know what the software support is going to be and you're paying the maximum retail price the product will ever be released at. If you're worried about not getting the best deal on your hardware, then you have to weight the benefits of having it now versus not getting the best deal.

The fact that Nintendo is doing anything to try to make nice with their core customer base is a sign that they realized how bad they overestimated the support that the handheld would receive, assuming that the market was the same as it was seven years ago. With Emergency Panic Mode officially engaged, the fact that those who already invested in the system are getting anything is remarkable, especially for a Japanese company that is going to bend over backwards to not admit that they fucked up.

@Blubba: I get your frustration. I understand why you are annoyed and why you feel ripped off. However, you are targeting your anger at the wrong party in this transaction. I'm not trying to be a dick, nor am I trying to start an argument, but from personal experience the only person to blame is yourself. Only buy something if the price is reasonable to you for the value on offer at that current moment in time, with no regrets. Always make a value judgement before you make a purchase. You didn't lose money, you spent it. If Nintendo had raised the price of the 3DS, similarly, you wouldn't have gained money. Know what you're buying before making a payment, and never buy something that has *potential*. Buy it because it's worth it now.

Exactly. If you made the assessment that it was worth $250 at launch, why are you upset? You didn't get ripped off, you paid what the product was worth. If you decided it wasn't worth $250, why did you buy it? If you made no value judgment at all and now suddenly believe it's worth less because they're asking a different price...maybe you should re-evaluate your purchasing habits.

No kidding. I've never heard of a company doing this. Especially Nintendo. People today just feel entitled for no reason. Sure, I think all of us 3DS early adopters would love an $80 rebate check, but when has that ever happened? You know what .. no, 20 free games isn't enough. I want 21 free games and a hand written apology addressed to me or else I'm going to piss and moan about it until I get my way.

Posted by Hef

I bought the 3DS for $250. I bought it at that point because I wanted it. Apologizing to people because they bought your product baffles me.

Honestly, if you're pissed off at nintendo for this price drop; you're an asshole. You chose to buy the system knowing the launch line-up and how many games were coming out this year. You didn't know a pirce drop would be coming this early, but would really have waited if you'd known?

Nintendo is even giving you a bunch of games for free. And not crappy throw-away titles that don't matter, but really cool and fun games. I personally can't wait to download my 20 free games.

Posted by tourgen

well at least they're trying. and they recognize how drastically the market has changed while they developed and released the 3DS. I don't personally think putting stereoscopic "3D" in a children's handheld gaming device was prudent but whatever. I'm no doctor. Only time will tell how it affects vision over extended use during a child's early life.

Posted by Bizzama

The way I see it, this is a pretty generous move on Nintendo's part. I paid $250 for my 3DS because I was willing to pay that much for it. Would I have waited to buy it if I knew the price was going to be cut so soon? Definitely. But Nintendo doesn't owe me $80 just because I made the decision to buy the 3DS early. They don't owe me anything, in my eyes, since it was my decision to pay that much- I only have myself to blame for spending $80 more than I could have. So really, the fact that they're going out of their way to give me what essentially amount to free games seems pretty cool of them.

Posted by FCKSNAP

The best apology is making more games. Like, constantly.

Posted by reddsimpson

I still love my 3DS and the fact we are getting the 20 games that would defintly like to have.  However my issue, and a lot of people are the double dippers.  The people how can buy it right now, become Ambassador, do a 30 day price match.  So esentially people who buy the system right now, will get 20 free games and the 3DS for $170.....

Posted by saxmusician20

My Wii is now being played by my wife who is an Opera singer with other opera singers all playing Rock Band. Imagine that. Just try.

I digress. Every time I see a 3DS, I keep comparing it to Capcom's money making trend of Super Excited Turbo Championship Black Hole Apocalypse Street Fighter IV series. Just another gimic added onto an existing system or game that is repackaged as a "new" system or game.

Posted by Ascardon

This was expected.Nintendo got a bit ahead of themselves after the Nintendo Wii/DS success.Just look at the demand for 3ds,it isn't any good at the moment.3rd party i hate to say it: "it sucks" .Nintendo has always struggled with 3rd party, while themselves make games so good that 3rd party don't stand a chance, except the big JP companies. That know how to handle the hardware like Konami and Capcom. When companies get cold feet looking at you Capcom, they canned the Megaman legends 3ds ,others will likely follow, one domino at the time.

Posted by dhenniga

This wasn't the smartest move by Nintendo but I guess they are backed into a corner and had to do something.  They really did it to themselves though.  Releasing a console prematurely into a uncertain market without a solid backing of quality titles from developers might have worked with the Wii but it's clearly not working with the 3DS.  They need to start getting the quality titles into the shelves NOW, not in time for the Christmas market.  The only saving grace is that when Nintendo make a quality title, it's usually absolutely brilliant, creative and polished to perfection and that's why I hang in there.

Posted by m0rdr3d

Weird situation.  I didn't know things were this dire, but it's nice to see Nintendo being aggressive and Iwata communicating in such a way.
I wonder if those Mario games will get rushed and released whether they're ready or not.

Man, Giant Bomb, hiring Patrick Klepek was the best move you guys made in a long time.  I love your video content, but I often just don't have time to watch a lot of it.  I do have time to read these news articles that pop up way more often than they ever used to.  And most importantly, Patrick's stories and commentary are so much better than the regurgitated press releases that pass for news at so many other game sites.  Great stuff, Patrick!

@Binman88: I appreciate that you didn't resort to ridiculous comments about me being "whiny" or an "embarrassment". It's sort of ridiculous how nobody can dislike something without getting criticized.

I still think it was a poor decision for Nintendo to make. I would have thought going into this, Nintendo would have known that the 3DS wouldn't go crazy because of the lack of games and wouldn't be so reactionary now that it isn't. Well now I do. Nintendo just lost a Wii U first day purchase and I doubt I'm the only one. I think being in your die-hard fans' good graces is important and this is going to come back and bite Nintendo in the ass later, especially since the Wii basically ignored the enthusiast though out this generation.

Edited by Adus

People are lucky Nintendo is offering anything at all. They have no obligation to award you with anything. You saw the price of the system. You saw the launch lineup. You chose to spend your money anyway. You can't even really say "Well I thought great games would be coming out quicker" because almost every system from any company has a weak lineup that takes almost a year to flesh out.

They could have dropped the price and said nothing and I wouldn't have blamed them. Even if they just gave an apology letter that would have been more than I expected. So this does make me respect Nintendo, because Samsung isn't gonna refund you 200 bucks when they drop the price of that flatscreen you bought a few months ago.

I think the 3DS was overpriced to begin with so I did not buy it. If you thought that and still bought it, and are not happy with what they're offering you now, then you only have yourself to blame. Everyone is well aware that price drops and system revisions happen so you should have waited if you were so unsure.

For the record this isn't really aimed at anyone in particular, just anyone who DOES think that "this isn't enough" or whatever. I realize that most of the comments have been pretty sane so far.

Yeah I absolutely agree that it's a bad business decision. It doesn't reflect well on them and the confidence you'd expect them to have in their own product. It gives the impression that laying down money on one of their products is now a potential gamble - essentially, even they don't know if it's going to succeed.
